Reimagining The Raids: Crota's End

I'm going to try and make this a weekly thing but who knows. Last week, I did a Reimagining of Vault of Glass (I'll link the post at the bottom in case you weren't one of the 12 people that saw it). This week, I'm doing one for Crota's End. This one has less overall changes (since I think CE is pretty good as is in terms of atmosphere and lore but it's also too short for me to do a whole lot without expanding it significantly) but I did add a whole new Encounter since I felt that CE suffers from its short length for me to just ignore that aspect completely. So here we go: Crota's End is Destiny's second and shortest Raid. It was buggy as hell and shorter than some modern day Strikes, but it had one advantage over VoG: Plot. We had a tangible reason to end Crota, both because of the threat of his return would never end unless we killed him in his Throne World, and because Eris Morn wanted some very understandable revenge. So I'm not gonna touch up this one as much as I will the other Raids, since I think it succeeds in that regard quite well. But it really lacks significance because you're going through places and slaying a God that killed thousands upon thousands of fellow Guardians. Crota's threat really isn't established ingame so that's what I wanted to focus on: setting up a sort of revenge plot for the player as well as Eris. Making Crota the monster he's supposed to be. 1. The Abyss. The only part of Crota's End that doesn't take place in Crota's Throne World, the Abyss is honestly the hardest portion of the Raid. And it's one of the best Raid Encounters in Destiny IMO. But you're going through an area where thousands of Guardians died trying to do what you're doing: slaying Crota. The bone piles are a Hive mainstay but they really don't evoke any fear or emotion or a sense of loss. So my suggestion is this: Guardian bodies. Put a ridiculous amount of Guardian bodies and equipment and armor all throughout the Abyss. And I don't mean just a few here and there. I want players to be unable to walk two feet without seeing a Guardian impaled on the ground with a Sword, or a Titan Helmet mounted atop a pointed rod or spear, or a Hunter cloak draped across a boulder. Show the player just how many others failed and give them a sense of urgency and loss. Prove that Crota is the threat he's supposed to be. 2. A new boss. Oh, you thought I was just gonna add another running portion or something simple like that? No. CE's bosses are honestly it's weakest aspect. Crota is good, but Ir Yût is a glorified wizard with a time limit. She's not a Raid Boss on the scale of Vosik or Templar, she's a miniboss like the Vex Gatekeepers or Oryx's Daughters. Now, the placement of this new boss would be right after the bridge is completed, but before the door is opened to the Shrieker Sprint. Instead of the Door opening after all 10 Gatekeepers are slain, anyone who died is revived and teleported to a room like the Shade's Domain in King's Fall. The boss himself is an Ultra Knight with a Boomer, with a similar design to Sardok, Eye of Oryx. I don't have a working name for the boss (I'm pretty crap at coming up with good names for anything I make), but his title would be something like Visage of Oryx or something similar. Lore-wise, he would basically be Crota's babysitter sent by Oryx to monitor him and protect him if need be. That doesn't break any of the lore and it honestly makes more sense to do that since we knew Oryx was Crota's father when TDB was released and none of that is really reflected ingame until TTK. His mechanics would be as follows: in the room (which is similar in design to the Darkblade's Cell, including the lighting) 3 Hallowed Ogres will spawn with the Visage. If you get too close to the Visage, he will "Siphon Your Light" and instantly kill you. He has a shield that prevents him from being damaged. In order to remove his shield and damage him, you must kill the Ogres. One of them will randomly drop an effect to the player that kills it called "Scent of the Abomination." What this will allow the affected player to do is get close to the Visage without being killed, and then perform an action (don't have a name for this but it would be something along the lines of "Sever Oryx's Connection" which is providing the Visage with his shield) on the Visage which then removes his shield, allowing the players to damage him. The player that removed the shield will be blinded and made invulnerable during this time. After the damage cycle ends, the Visage will teleport away and the players will have to fight a few waves of Thrall and a few sword Knights. The blindness and invulnerability will be removed from the affected player at this time as well. Once the ads are killed, the Visage and his Ogres will respawn and you rinse and repeat until he's dead. Once he's defeated, players are then teleported to the room at the beginning of the Shrieker Sprint. 3. Crota's Death. Pretty simple this one. When Crota dies, you now see his soul leave his body and disintegrate. While this is happening, he now screams "Father!" Eris says in TTK that Crota called out to Oryx as he died, and I think that showing that ingame would be a really nice tie-in and lead up to TTK. So that's pretty much it. Not as many changes as VoG, but the gameplay change is pretty significant and I won't be changing anything to that degree again until I get to Wrath of the Machine. I'd love to here your thoughts and suggestions below. Vault of Glass: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/224350741/0/0

    • Hardest part of raiding is listening to that toolbag try to tell everyone what to do. Running crota, a three year old raid, and I have some total moron who feels the need to try to tell people what to do. I'm like listen dipshit, we all have on full set of crota gear with ornaments, if I want to stay in the ground to kill the ogre in the right tower, don't keep screaming to get on the ledge. I can handle this ogre, it will be okay.

          •
the Abyss is honestly the hardest portion of the Raid.
I stopped reading right there. Anything where you can run through without shooting a single thing until the very end is not the hardest part of a Raid. Equipping Mida makes the Abyss a joke. Not to mention how easy it is for a Hunter to just stay invisible the whole time.

I really like the idea that someone else had about the bridge encounter so I'll expand on it. So you get everyone across, kill the gate keepers, but instead of the door opening up the thrall statues glow intensely and create a low humming sound. A large, glowing circle would appear at the back of the two sides of the arena (ogre spawn). Suddenly, a giant apparition of Crota would appear out of the chasm and smash the bridge and let out a giant blast that completely drains everyone of their light, making the party unable to regenerate super, grenades, melee, and even inhibits jumping. Guardians would have to dodge Crota's beams and fists while they would have to kill a specialized Wizard to get their jumps back, a sword knight to get their melees back, a boomer for grenades, and a beefy ogre for supers. Periodically, Crota will let out another giant blast, this time giving guardians a random debuff (slow, no regen, dizziness) but the blast could be avoided by standing in one of the circles at the end of the arena. These blasts will have decreasing cooldowns and happen more frequently the longer the fight goes on. After they reclaim all of their powers, guardians would have to activate the annihilator totems but instead of standing on the totems, you would try to form the bridge again but have to keep enemies from claiming them (like confluxes or portals). If an enemie does claim a totem, the blast is repurposed and empowers all enemies, giving them more health (10-15% increase). Once guardians detonate the totems 3 times, Crota will let off one more blast except this time it would be focused into a beam. A swordbearer would spawn and guardians would use the sword the redirect the beam into the door, blasting it open and excaping Crota and weakening him for the final encounter.

                  • See as I've done this raid so many times, I wish we had to spend more time at the bridge section. Maybe instead of being teleported, a (insert enemy here) spawns and destroys the bridge after everyone is across. It's name would be (I suck at names so just leave comments, we will call it X). X would stay in the crevasse between the two sides. The boss fight would most likely include using 4 floating platforms that are floating around this area currently. These platforms are a jumping puzzle that allow 2 players to get behind X and shoot it's back from each side. Eventually the people in the back will do enough damage to expose a crit spot in it's chest that is for the 4 people back on the mainland to DPS. (While the 2 guardians are doing damage to X's back, the 4 on land will clear adds, most likely boomers and acolytes, possibly wizards half way through. After a period of time, X will activate the two annihilator totems on each the mainland. The annihilator totems need 3 guardians each to stop, so the team will split to two. After this it is rinse and repeat. Maybe a challenge mode would be to kill enough wizards or something simple but hard to execute.

                      • For Abyss I would take a different aura. I'd take a slower maze, with little to no enemies but you might even call them jumpscares- couldn't be done on D1 and ik couldn't be done at PEGI 16 but like, hyper realistic dead guardians everywhere you look, and you're on your ghost light. Most raids fall down where I don't feel like I'm going to fight a monster. Just an enemy.

                                    • I agree with this 100 percent because there definitely was not enough story elements like The Taken King had leading up to the raid or building up throughout the raid besides this was revenge for Eris. I almost think Eris appearing after you kill crota while your in the raid would have been good as well or a cutscene after the raid. I just love story and still want more story. The Destiny world is so interesting and it was so sad to have to read through the trading cards to figure out the deep story without cut scenes or more explanations through interactions with the characters. I'm sure this will be solved in D2 because Luke Smith knows what he is doing. The Taken King will still be the best story expansion we got in D1 in my opinion.

                                    • Part 1. Would be distracted trying to take whatever isn't nailed down. All loot will be tested for this. As far as bodies being a threat, I can show you an impressive number of cow carcasses just off my property. Doesn't mean I killed them though. Part 2. You had a decent concept, then let it fall flat. You just said one of the bosses is a glorified wizard, so what makes a glorified knight better? Why throw in more oddball mechanics when you could make it a memorable fight? Have a flying worm or something, cloaked by dense fog or a chamber that constantly shifts geometry, never allowing you to to be fully prepared for its next strike. You want to look back on the fight and ask for round two, not mumble about how tedious it was. And don't worry about hive lore. They're the vague, open-ended enemy: toss in anything you want and it'll fit so long as it's about worms or against light and doesn't go into too much detail. Part 3. If his soul disintegrates after being defeated, how would you complete the taken king quest?
Like I said, don't worry about lore. They make up the rules for the hive as they go along, so trying to add nice details only creates or exposes plot holes.
And as always, your mom's a classy lady.

Now if you had to make him fall off something or blow himself up, something different somehow, that would be good.
