We all know that RPG feeling, you find a great piece of gear but it's VERY ugly; At the same time, Destiny has a TON of lower rarity gear pieces that look great but never get used because they're Blue and Green-tier and have little to no use in the game. Why not fix both problems? That and just the general lack of diversity in how Guardians look.
What I am hoping for is something similar to how For Honor handled it's gear (Even though I know it's probably not the first game to do something like this). Basically I propose that if you have a Purple-tier chestpiece with great stats and a decent perk roll, you should be able to choose a piece of gear with equal or lower rarity (so a Purple, Blue or Green) and give your chestpiece it's appearance in trade for some Glimmer, Legendary Marks and the destruction of the gear piece you're taking the look of.
I think it's be a simple mechanic, just another node underneath infusion (which I sincerely hope returns in Destiny 2 and would be surprised if it doesn't) that has a different icon. You use the menu in the exact same way as infusion, spend resources, destroy that gear; and the gear you currently have equipped now looks fresh and new.
I don't think there'd be a drawback to this so long as Exotic armor was excluded, and potentially Raid gear.
As far as naming goes, I think if you were wearing Eon Tracer Helm for example, but you wanted to pay homage to Wei Ning (as I always do) and decided to change it's look to Spearhead type 0 (a year 1), the outcome would be something like "Spearhead Type 0 (Custom)", and it would import the flavor text as well as the name. Bungie could still remove OP gear from the game through out-leveling it as they did throughout Destiny's lifespan, but we could still keep using their visuals, which I don't think would hurt at all.
