what do the covenant breath?

Okay i know that grunts breath methane and i heard hunters breath nitrogen but what about elites and jackels? I dont think that the elites breath anything as the arbiter goes underwater and is okay [Edited on 11/9/2005]

  • As far as I know the Grunt's breath methane and the rest breath oxygen, since they don't need special eqipment. Somebody said something about Elites being in water and not drowning, but I left a bunch of Marines underwater for about half an hour and they were fine. That probably means that everyone, or at least Elites, Marines and Grunts have some kind of breathing equipment, but only grunts need it, and the others only use it if they have to. MC is a cyborg and I'm sure is sealed off from the outside and has an oxygen supply.

When I see topics I find loserific, I just close the window and go grab a Pepsi or something. Besides, pondering questions like this is rather stimulating, and it's also quite a social satisfaction, so to speak. So... shut up?

  • I think since it is a game, conventional Biology rules for certain organisms do not apply here. It would be interesting however, if the developers of this series gave more indepth detail on the exact Biological and perhaps Chemical composistion (if any) and were introduced to the fans. As far as guessing....(which is always fun) Elites may respirate with some ratio of oxygen and nitrogen. However. in a previous post someone said Marines were able to breathe just fine in the great city. I like his observation and believe Elites breathe as we humans do. I love seeing people who take an active pursuit to science, even though its just a videogame. [Edited on 11/10/2005]

  • My guess is that they breath air (Oxygen etc.) since its never mentioned in the books that they would need any special breathingtank like the grunts. And that the grunts have to have special tanks to survive is pointed out at several times, and that many didnt die in battle but of suffecation. So if other races of the covenant needed anything special than air to breath I guess they would have writen about that aswell. And since MC can survive on High Charity the atomsphere there must be breatable for humans. The MJOLNIR armor would only let him survive without air for a short time.

  • Omg they could breathe anything. How do you know what elites breathe. Who the hell told you. But I'm pretty sure elites dont breathe. I mean elites stay in water for a hell of a long time. Jackals. Maybe oxygen. lol

Bruts have black blood. But if horse shoo crabs have blue blood and some tipe of lisard has green (not shure what type) i don't think it matters. I'd still like to know why though.

  •
Posted by: Zed Seconly, i'f any of the covies breeth oxigen why do nun of them have red blood (yess i know i'm contradicting myselfe).
Prophets as well as Brutes (I think Brutes, not sure, feel free to correct me on that) have red blood, and co-exist in the same environments as the other members of the Covenant. Those two use oxygen the same way as we do, apparently. The tablets describing the ages of the Covenant depict a primitive war between Prophets and Elites, before they discovered the Forerunner technology. It's possible that they lived on the same world for quite some time, and thus they breathe the same air. Oxygen for Elites, then, and Jackals, even though they may not be from the same planet (though their anatomy suggests they are), have the same type of blood as Elites. So I guess I retract my previous statement and vote for oxygen.

  • You know how Elite blood is not red. Well what element would make blood that color? Anyone good enough in biology to know? Also, remember what you breath doesn't effect what color your blood is. The color is from your diet. (iron is important in your diet) For example, horseshoe crabs have blue blood but breath oxygen. [Edited on 11/9/2005]

Anaerobic respiration dusn't nesacerly need to creat acid. ln yeast, for instance, it creats acohol.

  • anaerobic respiration creates poisonus volumes of acids. We humans take this acid then use it, with oxygen and other chemicals, in a cycle, known as the Kreb's cycle, to produce energy. It is possible that Elites evolved to make use of Nitrogen, but it is still possible for them to have to breath Oxygen as well. I am assuming that since much of their physiology is similar to us, their lung size/volume may be similar, which may suggest that they breath Oxygen as well. And as for the flood guy, it has been thought of before. That doesn't quite match this topic, so no one posted it... [Edited on 11/9/2005]

  • Has anyone thought of what the flood must respire in order to survive? apparently not. The Flood are not Carbon-based. they are Silicon-based organisms that must breathe sulfur. Silicon is the only other Stable element that can support life. That is why the flood are accompanied by that yellow cloud: the flood are changing the atmosphere to SULFUR! and nobody has thought of that!
Posted by: ThePuMan
Posted by: Zed How the hell is somthing soposed to get energy from nitrogen. Eliets respire anarobicly. Other wise how would the ranger ones sevive in space?
The ranger elites have breath masks if you noticed. and have any of you people payed any attention to high school biology? respiring anarobicly yealds very little enery compared to breathing aerobicly. Also resperating anarobicly is painful for the cells. it is used as a last resort. after a long run have any of you noticed a pain in the sides of your abdomen? that is anarobic respiration. Another thing, the blood in humans is red because the stuff in red blood cells is called hemogobin. this stuff is four oxygen atoms bonded to one iron atom. the iron makes the blood red. The oxygen isnt what makes energy. hydrogen is. in the mitocondria of the cells, water is broken down to make hydrogen to complete the 3rd portion of an energy molecule. in order to make this stuff the old energy molecule which has 2 parts is bonded with hydrogen. a piece of carbon is taken away and thats were the oxygen comes in. It is needed to take away the carbon. the body has all the energy it needs through water but the carbon needes to be taken away. the oxygen does this. hence the carbon dioxide that is exhaled. Blood with oxygen is red because oxydated iron is red. Veins are blue because carbon dioxide with iron is blue. every time you get a cut blood becomes red because it becomes oxydated. Since elite blood is blue-purple it doesnt use either oxygen or iron. I would think it uses copper because oxydated copper is blue.
Firt off, thers more than 1 way to respire anarobicly (look at yeast). Seconly, i'f any of the covies breeth oxigen why do nun of them have red blood (yess i know i'm contradicting myselfe). Add larsty, l honestly hadent noticed that the rangers wore masks, but what about the outside of the forruner facility on the first Arby level?

  •
Posted by: ClarenceBullseye
Posted by: HaloFighter92 78% of the earths atmoshepere is Nitrogen, 31% is oxygen, 1% is water vapor. It's hard to say, possibly nitrogen, remeber the arbiter level, how do we know thats wasn't Nitrogen as the air? The place looked pretty odd colored. Additionally, when the Heretic Elites breathe the air, they breathe out "smoke", which may be a long expostion to Nitrogen, or just a cold atmoshpere.
You mean 68% Nitrogen.
Thanks on the correction. Also we will not know what they breathe, they either have to breath Oxygen or Nitrogen, we may possibly never know. [Edited on 11/9/2005]

  • On thing we know for sure is that Grunts breathe Methane. It is possible for us to breathe in trace gases, such as helium, so other planets may have different levels of trace gases. It is also possible that the colonies to be contained in domes. It is probable that the squid-heads breathe the same we do, and same go for the Kin-yar. The Hunters are actually many tiny organisms acting as one body, so who knows how they could breathe. And Drones breathe the way bugs do. Having not read the above post Squid-heads could breathe in a high level of neon, considering that neon is a noble gas. [Edited on 11/9/2005]
