but so far both of the recent Star Wars films have been high quality
Rogue One had a garbage story with terrible writing and boring characters. Not a good predecessor to a character film about one of the most iconic duos in cinema history.

I don't see how it had terrible writing. The script was great, lots of people seemed to enjoy it. The characters were bad and very underdeveloped, but they had timing perfectly on the writing.

Rogue juan was indeed a disappointment.

Why should the characters be interesting if they all die? ~ Making America Great Again ~

I would say Rouge Juan is an average film. The film slowly gains steam and masterfully builds up to this big battle to get the plans to the Death Star. However, I never really remembered everyone's name after the movie ended. None of them were memorable. I would say a 5/10. I wasn't too concerned with the characters on my initial viewing. I just wanted to see how the Rebels stole the Death Star plan, and it works in this aspect.

I guarantee you there will be a moment when Han Solo gets into trouble and gets saved by some female empowerment.

It's just a matter of opinion. I enjoyed Rogue One. The story was simple, but that was expected from something we've already known a decent amount about.

Edited by HurtfulTurkey: 2/22/2017 12:32:21 AM
I enjoyed Rogue One.
That's totally fine -- I enjoyed it too -- but can you really say it had the quality of writing and characters that you want or expect out of a Star Wars movie -- or any series you're a fan of? Fans should be adamant that the products they enjoy be good. Saying Rogue One was "high quality" really takes the onus off Lucasfilms to make good movies if fans are just going to praise anything they make.

Actually, yes, I can. For a one-off film, I thought all the characters were pretty good. They all had motives, strengths, and weaknesses. I can't really think of a character that I thought was weakly written. Maybe a line or two, but not a character or scene. I think part of it comes down to it not being a continuation of the main line but a side story. I got exactly what I wanted from it and more.

I think they did a bit of a poor job with developing chirruts friend and a few minor details with all the characters but overall they did a great job of locking in the saving private Ryan style story. I can't see why anyone was too disappointed.

I agree. In all honestly, if they over-developed them, the film wouldn't have worked. We entered in part way through their lives to see one main event. It was a singular story within a much larger galaxy. The characters in RO had as much backstory as Obi-Wan did in the original trilogy.

Yeah I agree with that, I don't see how they could've fixed the problem without making the movie too convoluted. About the backstory thing, it's good to see that's the case. I liked the movie enough on its own so I didn't read any of the novels and stuff but it's great they exist and are canon for those who want to read them.
