Trials is killing destiny.

This was supposed to be an epic space fantasy. Now, the performance of every weapon and subclass in the game is constantly held hostage by one game mode that has nothing to do with the core elements of the game's universe. I hated it when it launched, and it becomes clear with every patch that trials is always the priority, leaving all the PvE players out in the cold. Bungie, you are going to have to make some pretty substantial changes to how trials effects destiny if you expect any pre-orders for Destiny 2. Edit: for those who claim that trials is what keeps destiny going, I'm going to have to fundamentally disagree. Point #1: The thing that keeps destiny going is the thing that people hate the most about it: RNG. At its core, Destiny is a loot based shooter with an RPG foundation. The gameplay loop of loot based games centers on gaining power for your character to take on tougher challenges, to get better loot. The loot itself is the reward system that the game is based upon. Point # 2: Bungie employees have specifically stated that Trials is intended for only 1% if the player base. Making changes based on 1% of the player base that undermine the core gameplay loop underlying what destiny is poisons the entire game. The loot reward system loses its power when players are always skeptical of a particular build or item getting nerfed in the future. The anticipation and excitement of getting that loot drop from a raid boss is diminished based on the constant looming threat of nerfs and enthusiasm for the core gameplay loop wanes. Overwatch works as a competitive game because the characters are "built" for you and there is no diversity or loot. Halo worked because a sniper rifle is a sniper rifle and a needler is a needler. Lack of variety is fundamental to creating a solid competitive game. It is also antithetical to loot based games like Diablo, Borderlands, and Nioh. Destiny was sold on its universe building, story, loot, and cooperative elements, yet it consistently undermines those principles to try to create a competitive game that cannot possibly exist in Destiny's universe.

  • Well if you think about it.....how many posts can you recall seeing, that asked for nerfs or buffs on the pve side of things? (Aside from arc burn skolas lol!) Really the variety of weapons is great, until introduced into a competitive scene. Now say there was a crucible only equivalent of all gun classes, then the pvp crowd could push for nerfs and buffs all they want. Truly it would be able to go both ways if needed, and not effect the other. But then there will be complaints of I earned x gun doing blah blah and should be able to use it in pvp! Well ok, then everyone runs the same shotgun or pulse or scout or whatever is hot atm....not the variety complained for. So I think they should just split the two game modes weapons in half entirely. Sad as it is. Welp I'm done going to the bathroom now. Bye.

  • It's not just trials - is pvp in general. Well before trials was introduced in HoW, Bungie were making all kinds of nerfs for pvp which bled into pve. One of the earliest and most significant was the Mythoclast. I'm still asking myself why they didn't just apply the huge damage nerf to pvp only. They just need to separate pve and pvp buffs and nerfs entirely for Destiny 2. Let pve have fun OP weapons, and let pvp be a fair and balanced environment which doesn't contain utterly broken exotics.

  • I am an avid trials player, and I agree with some of the points you made. But, I do still think that trials should still be involved with D2. Nevertheless, I think that there should be a qualifier (with fairly low goals. Maybe a 1.0 k.d weekly?) that will allow you to gain entrance to the event. This will allow the strictly PVE players to not be excluded from the attention of the Bungie Employees and community. I am in no means a designer, but I think that that idea could work. Thanks for the post.

  • Trials is not a game but a business. People selling their skills and I think that should not be allowed.
I may be more of a pvp player, but i appreciate pve players all the same because of the path they choose to take. The recent nerf for the truth(in my opinion)was somewhat logical from a pvp standpoint, but it completely left the pve players out of the picture. This is something bungie has been doing since their first patch and it's really pissing me off.

I had someone make the same claim yesterday that trials is whats keeping destiny alive. But i think everyone fails to realise that the player base would have been (and still would be) much greater if they had of stuck with concentrating on PvE elements of the game. (Like that raid that was coming with HoW, and a proper arena type game-mode. Not that piss-poor Prison of Elders) The magic that was there for players when running vault of glass has been gone from Destiny ever since HoW. They should never have included a competitive PvP mode imo.

    • These matchmaking tines are killing destiny it's like reliving the night rise of iron launched and no one could play the game. The community wanted connection when these servers are worse than the McDonald's Wi-Fi.

    • When the Dawning came out my people started playing Destiny ago, i did as well. About a month later i left again having exhausted everything i wanted to do in PvE, my people stayed and played trials. I know that's allegorical but it seems to me that Trials keeps people playing the game - i don't like it, thus i don't play it but i don't see it as the problem at all. I've got just a hair shy of 3000 hours in the game and to my thinking the lack of PvE content is the biggest issue closely followed by crappy rebalancing. I'd switch the order of those if a gave a rats ass about PvP but i don't. That said, i get that it keeps people playing - it just seems odd to me that they seem committed to pissing that segment of their population off.

      • Not sure I entirely agree, but you make a good argument. There is a fundamental tension at the core between a diverse loot-based system and good pvp parity. What I don't get is this: if Trials isn't for everyone, that's fine. But why put it in the year 3 record book then? You're just forcing us scrubs in there to be cannon fodder. It's not fun. And we don't even get good loot for it.

        • I haven't touched this game since June 2015... and I already can see that very little has changed from the community to Bungie itself. Bungie is only still around today because of PVP... Halo wouldn't have seen a sequel if it wasn't for the overwhelming fanfare surrounding Slayer! So this whole Trials thing might be a way for Micro**** and Bungie to hold a community similar to COD or EA BF or Overwatch or CSGO or whatever. This game seriously suffers from an identity crisis at times cause of how much ground they are trying to cover and how they are doing it. But if they focus on what made this game great in the first place -at some point after release- then maybe it's fans can be happy? idktforeal

          • It's not Trials. It's the crybabies, streamers and Bungie's poor decisions. Phucking seriously, how the hell did they not realize a special ammo change/nerf like that would not end up with a sidearm festival like we have now?

              • Made a similar post about carries in Trials. I completely agree with you. The 1% is honestly more than HALF of the player base at this time. Because there are so many trash players who can't complete the one activity in this game that is only meant for THE BEST OF THE BEST. I worked for my 2 flawless on PS4 (1 for Year 2, 1 for Year 3). I had over 10 when Trials was first introduced back on HoW DLC. Why I say this? The game has changed and revolved around this one gametype that shouldn't matter. Destiny 2 is around the corner. If people are just in it for the grimoire, open the lighthouse to everyone as a 4th social space. The chest is locked unless you arrive with a flawless card. Have vendors selling the basic trials weapons and gear, while the adept weapons/ornament gear is only obtained from the chest. But you say something like this to streamers, hardcore fagbo--, excuse me FANboys, and those who spend more time in the forums than playing the actual game, you get serious backlash and your post gets drown in the sea of despair. Then your opinion can't be heard by the moderators and community leaders. It's sad, but I do agree with you on all of this. Trials needs to go away until Destiny 2. Then maybe we'd see improvements to this game, instead of acting upon the supposed "1%" who only play PvP.

                • Trials was the only reason I still played this game. With the new special nerf see ya later done with this game. No one is gonna force me to use a sidearm, icebreaker or invective. RIP PVP/Trials/Destiny

                  • People want go flawless and that's why the devs says trials isn't meant for average pvp players which was bs. Because I got to seven matches all you gotta do is play it smart and stop going to same location.
