Why is "Arrival" so highly rated?

Can someone explain? I honestly felt like I wasted ~2 hours of my life watching it. Am I saying the movie is "bad"? No. I just don't understand why reviews are so positive for a movie that seemed devoid of any actual plot or substance. The visuals were amazing, in my honest opinion and the audio (effects, soundtrack, et cetera) was superb, but all of that is irrelevant when the movie is just so lacking. Did the themes and subtle hints just fly over my head? What am I missing here? The focus on linguistics and communication is something I liked, as I've interest in both of those things, but anything other than that failed to really keep my attention. The last few acts of the movie seem like they're loaded with asspulls and other plot contrivances too, but again, maybe I'm just missing something... Tl;dr - as the title says, why is Arrival so well received?

  • I just watched it today. I thoroughly enjoyed their version of time travel. It's a fresh take in my eyes and didn't feel ham fisted by the end.

    • I was onboard until the ending twist about the language. Beyond stupid. Visuals were great. Aliens were great. Wish it had been abit more realistic toward the end.

Somewhat related; Arrival is the only decent track in Halo 4's OST.

        • You could've just left it at "I found it boring". I enjoyed it, personally. It reminds me of Contact.

        • The film wasn't lacking in the slightest. Between the subtle verbal dialog hints dropped throughout that culminate perfectly into the final twist (really gives you that "oh shit" moment when it all clicks) to the nuance and complexity of communication that is delicately explored and conveyed as so to not drag on or rush, the film is very rewarding. Arrival did well because it was a cut above the dry, unoriginal, and mindless sci-fi films that have become a mainstay in the theaters. Taking time to develop its narrative rather than rush to large actions scenes or rely on long sequences of mundane exposition. Furthermore, the way the movie so seemlessly blends future and past together is an extraordinary feet in itself. Arrival is the type of film you have to want to watch and be invested in to enjoy. You can't just put it on as it won't babysit the viewer. If you don't find the subject material interesting, then I could understand why it would be a bore and not enjoyable, but to say it's lacking is a discredit to how well crafted the film truly is. However, As anything that is an art, a films value and quality to the viewer is subjective. Arrival managed to appeal to a lot of people for the aforementioned reasons, and therefor it did well with reviewers.

            • I dunno. I enjoyed it. There were a couple things that didn't really make sense, but I thought it was really well done and enjoyable overall.
