What's wrong with insulting people in an argument?

I never got the problem, an insult doesn't make points less valid. Is it just thin skin or am I missing something?

  • It basically shows that you have nothing else to say and that you know you lost your argument. Imagine debating with someone and they just call you an idiot for asking for information or their sources. I usually see this happen to Mad Max, he makes a valid point and provides links to his sources then other people come and go " Ur LIbUrel Ur dUmb AnD WrUNg. ThEir WaS 3 MillION IlliGal Votes" then Mad Max ask him to provide evidence for this information and they go "LULZ I don't have to proVe aNyThing, Yur Bline iF U Can't See it. LULZ StUpiD LiBerAL Tears."

    • It's what you use when you're out of arguments. It means you lost.
The luckiest seven you will ever meet
• It's seen as a defence mechanism for when you run out of arguments.

Name-calling is pointless and only serves to degrade the other person and their position, regardless of whether their points hold weight or not, which isn't what a debate is about. If you have a sound argument, there is no need to use insults. People forget the reason these rules of debating exist is to lessen the emphasis on shit throwing and appeals to emotion and make it as much about the actual issues themselves, and whether a position makes logical sense, as possible.

        • People forget that ad hominem is not equivalent to insulting sometimes.

          •
an insult doesn't make points less valid.
It doesn't add anything to the argument either. I use Sargon of Akkad as an example. He correctly argues that he doesn't rely on ad hominem fallacies because he doesn't substitute character attacks for arguments. He only supplements his arguments with petty name-calling. It's still sophistic. Talking down to somebody or insulting them in an argument only serves as emotional manipulation. There's no guarantee that your opponent or audience will disregard insults, so it's better to not taint the discussion.

          • "Well you're ugly" isn't an argument and only serves to distract from the discussion. The party that chooses to avoid the conversation with petty insults shows their weaker side. But an insult can be used to further an argument. So long as it's executed correctly

              • Makes your arguements look a bit flimsy, and makes you look immature. Nothing wrong with it, but insulting the other guy won't help you.

              • Insults don't really advance the argument - they just make it personal.

              • Depends how and who you do it with really, for me sometimes we will have an argument and start insulting each other to where we both see who can make the greatest or darkest comeback.
we then forget what we were arguing about
• Calling someone an idiot when they ask for you to refute their argument shows that you have nothing to say back to them and that you've gone to the low point of childish insults. However, if you say something like "That's not true at all you idiotic Orangutan!" And then begin to list a bunch of facts backed up by sources. Not only does that insult them but it also proves them wrong.

              • If the person is not willing to listen yeah.

              • If the person is acting like an idiot and ignoring basic facts, yes I need to call him an idiot. Its not insulting, its bringing awareness.
