The nine uncovered. [Leviathans]

Welcome back. (Or if you found this one first, welcome.) This is a series of posts discussing what the nine are. Carrying on with the card in question, We’ll be moving on to the next line.
The Nine are ancient leviathan intelligences from the seas of Europa or the hydrocarbon pits of Titan.
There’s only one other place that mentions “Leviathan” and that is the book of sorrows. The leviathan was a great creature who worked with the traveler. It tried to convince Oryx and his sisters not to pursue the deep. It failed. This bit, however, claims that the nine are leviathan intelligences. The minds of leviathans. When we look at the nine’s actions, they don’t seem hostile towards us. As a matter of fact, they seem to want to help us. They send xur to give us their “trash” but they probably know that their “trash” is a treasure to us. Either way, what they’re doing is beneficial towards us and the traveler, and the leviathan from the Book of Sorrows seemed to be on the traveler’s side. Speaking of Xur, he says some things that support the leviathan position.
"I cannot explain what the Nine are. They are... very large. I cannot explain. The fault is mine, not yours."

"It is very possible that the Nine intend to help humanity."
Xur tries to describe the nine as “Very large” but says that isn’t an entirely accurate description. This would probably be due to the nine being "Leviathan intelligences". They're big, but not necessarily in a physical sense. He tells us that the nine may very well want to help us, but for some reason, they aren't very active in their support. Both of these quotes support the possibility that the nine may be related to the leviathan from the Book of Sorrows. One more thing that the nine [leviathan stance] and the BoS leviathan have in common is where they like to reside. The Fundament was a gas giant, and the leviathan was found when Oryx and his sisters dived into the Fundament. If we assume the Leviathan position is true, the nine could be found in the hydrocarbon pits of titan or the seas of Europa. Europa and Titan happen to be moons of two gas giants, (Jupiter and Saturn). Though it says they came from the moons, that could just be where their influence was first seen. To summarize, if the leviathan position is true, the nine are leviathans that have come to help the traveler. They’re hiding in Jupiter and Saturn and seem to have a sort of significant presence on Europa and Titan. As to why they feel the need to be so secretive, I wouldn’t know. Maybe they don’t quite understand what the guardians are and feel the need to keep their distance. Or, maybe they're like the BoS leviathan and acting as wardens to a force that is locked in the deep of the gas giants. You decide which one you think is more likely. Thank you for you time. Hope you enjoyed. More good stuff. These lore posts remind me of when Star Wars came out. Everyone wanted to know so much more than they could fit in the span of a movie. The grimoire was a great idea. I used to want it in the game, but now realize that it just wasn't possible. Although, some would have been nice.

If their trash is our exotics we should have a raid to steal their treasure. It could be crazy OP gear and weapons that requires buying ammo or something to keep the gear charged from xur with strange coins.

          • I think that to assume the two are the same because of the wording is silly. That's like the people that say Saladin is a defender Titan because he was called a "defender of the city". "Leviathan intelligences" could just mean very vast and powerful intelligences and have no correlation to the Leviathan in the Book of Sorrows whatsoever. That's not to say it's impossible, but I think your reasoning isn't very strong.

            • The 9 as the last nine Ahamkara is a leading theory. The 9 may also refer to 9 'settlements' on the Jovian moons It is also possible that the 9 are former guardians who settled on the Jovian moons (possibly even the Iron Wolves). Depending on how you interpret the cards, and the in-game statements from Xur and the Speaker, and of these things could be possible

              • The first time I ever read this card, the first thing I noticed was that each of these origins seem to be seperate, and, coincidentally, there are exactly nine of them. My original takeaway was that, even though being spoken of collectively, each one describes a different member of the nine.

                • There's 2 questions we need to ask. 1. How did Leviathans get our type of weapons. This question veritably assumes that the previous story involving the collapse MUST have had to do with us going to Jupiter and Neptune. Not only can we find evidence proving both, we also find warning signs in the Books or Sorrow. We can't just toss in video game logic, because the game explains how our weapons ended up in different storyline's factions. 'think Eris Morn and Murmur'. So our answers lie in the Pre TTK era, because TTK was after the original writers abandoned ship. 2. What would the motive of the Traveler even be if it was planning on leaving for the next planet, and so on? And what would cause a seemingly honorable race (fallen) to immediately assume it's evil? Secondly, wouldn't such a nice thing (and intelligent apparently) understand that it would offset a lunar cycle? (books of sorrow). So clearly something is up. Lastly, we need to identify what the Traveler and Leviathans would have in common. 1. Giant 2. Knowledgeable/Powerful 3. Potentially technologically infused? If I was to pick any random theory, I'd have to say the Traveler is actually a Leviathan Egg

                    • Seeing Xur in person, one would think he is a wielder of the Darkness, just like Eris Morn. Her motives are unclear to us, but I know there are quite a few theories with that as well. The Leviathans do sound intriguing, but I was always curious if Eris could also be a recruit of the Nine with her eyes opened to the influence of the Darkness.

I side with this idea in a way. I always figured it was some sort of council of 9 entities. The leviathan in BoS seems to be and agent of the Sky and we know the traveler is. I have also heard the possibility of the nine being ahamkara. it may be possible that leviathans ARE ahamkara, but just under a different name. This idea would blend these two ideas together.

Leviathan is a late 14th C word depicting a dragon or serpent so I've often thought they're the Ahamkhara. As a quick snippet of info, the only dragon I know of in mythology that has anything to do with a specific number is Níðhǫggr who gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil (the World Tree which holds in its branches the Nine Worlds). Might not be the only one though since there are Nine such dragons mentioned in the Prose Edda (Skáldskaparmál section) Fafnir, Níðhǫggr, Moin, Grafvitnir, Grabak, Ofnir, Svafnir, Jörmungandr, Góinn.

                                  • What gets me is how the Nine, while selling us exotics since the beginning, actively planted the Nova Mortis and the Abaddon- somewhat nudging us along. This makes me think the idea of providing us with exotics is their own agenda.
