Mass Effect Andromeda: The Krogan Problem.

So something just occurred to me while I was re-watching some trailers for Madd Effect Andromeda. There are Krogan on this expedition. And not just a couple, but a reasonable amount. Now, Mass Effect Andromeda starts before the events of Mass Effect 3 where we cured the genophage (or not if you're a terrible human being). The Krogan still can't effectively reproduce and there's probably not a huge population of them joining to go on the arcs. It's possible the krogan that we take could all die or enough of them could die that we wouldn't have the crazy deadly soldiers with us in future games. Food for thought.

  • Well, in 1 and 2, the general Krogan attitude is pretty much just "we're gonna die off anyways, might as well make a few bucks til then." It's not too difficult for me to believe that these Krogan are simply highly paid mercs. It wasn't until Wrex started drawing he clans together that they even started feeling like they had a chance. Or some had vision, like Wrex, and decided to try to find a new home for the Krogan beyond the Milky Way, away from wars and judgement. I could also see this as a possibility if the player decided to kill Wrex in the first one.

    • In the 2nd trailer excited black guy says something about how he's been waiting 500 years for this. I'm sure an AI could cure the genophage in that time frame. Also, I think the Arks left a few months into the Reaper War. No one really believed Shep about the reapers until they were there, so any point before ME3 doesn't make sense.

          • Couldnt the Krogan who are in andromeda be the ones who are awoken out of cryo stasis before the Genophage was implemented? Wouldnt take that many Krogan as other species to repopulate a colonized world.

            • The genophage didn't make the Krogan sterile, it simply brought their number of viable births down to a more manageable level. Imagine it this way a human being can Traditionally have 1 child per year (given that single baby pregnancies are more common than twins, triplets etc.) given our 9 month gestation period. Krogan's on the other hand can have dozens or more and every one of them was a viable birth so take one add a dozen then add a dozen to each one of those and you have a massively spiralling birth rate. The genophage simply made it that given their short gestation period and number born per...batch? Was lowered to 1-2 viable births a year. Their population is more than capable of thriving and not going extinct especially given their long life spans. So the Krogan in ME:A if grouped could have a perfectly good chance at continuing their race but only if they stay together. Spread out, yes they would slowly go extinct and seeing as we don't have any official numbers but we do know that they were hired primarily as muscle/security I doubt there's a large enough population for them to claim a world of their own.

              • I was thinking the same thing. These Krograns obviously went because they see it as a suicide mission. As explained in Mass Effect 1-3, the remaining Krograns lost hope in curing the genophage and became mercenaries for hire.

                • If I am not mistaken, the events ofMass Effect Andromeda take place after Mass Effect 3, so the genophage is cured and krogans are multiplying.

                  • It depends on the rate they were mutating according to Mordin Solus. He says they were adapting to it so the virus had to be adjusted. Depend on how fast they were adapting to it, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that the Krogan onboard the Nexus could outlive it considering Krogan have essentially Asari lifespans.

                  • Good, death to the krogan! They are ugly as sin and a threat to humanity and all intelligent races. I killed Wrex with pride and denied them their cure.

                    • Yes and no, if you remember the krogan were actually fighting off the genetic mutation naturally, which is why the silarions wanted to send a team in to essentially give the krogan a booster. So the group we have could actually be more fertile, also it is possible that we find a group that can reverse the genofage on one of the new planets. One of the main reasons it wasnt done in the other universe is that the council stopped anyone that tried. Do remember that there were multiple times where groups were either very close to a cure or made a cure, and we either destroyed it or stopped them from finishing until the final game.

                    • I've thinking about this too... I guess they're screwed. Maybe scientists in the Andromeda Initivate made a cure since they're leaving and don't have to deal with political bs. But that would probably be too convenient.
