(WTKR/CBS) - Law enforcement officers across the country are warning about a new phone scam.
The scammer usually starts by introducing themselves and their business.
"That would be the first thing. That kind of warms you up," Norfolk Police Officer Jo Ann Hughes said.
Police say sometimes this is an automated recording
Then the scammer will ask, "Can you hear me?"
Officers say the natural response is to say, "Yes."
But that's what could get you in trouble.
Scammers record your response and then claim to sign you up for products you never ordered.
If you try to deny the charges, they simply play back your verbal response and threaten legal action if you don't pay up.
"A lot of times, victims don't want to come forward because they are embarrassed," Hughes said.
Authorities have some tips to avoid this scam:
・Don't answer the phone from numbers you don't know.
・Don't give our personal information.
・Don't confirm your number over the phone.
・Don't answer questions.
1 ReplyIf they ask that then turn it into a philosophical debate. "Can you hear me?" "I don't know. We all hear, but we don't listen." "That a yes or a no?" "I don't think it's either. Nothing is ever black and white, there is always the gray area."

"Can you hear me?" Me: Who said that?

Simple solution: file a court case, and find them in a dark alley and pummel them after the court hearing :)

Hello? Hello? Hello? Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me Is there anyone at home? Come on now I hear you're feeling down Well I can ease your pain Get you on your feet again Relax I'll need some information first Just the basic facts Can you show me where it hurts? There is no pain you are receding A distant ship smoke on the horizon You are only coming through in waves Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying When I was a child I had a fever My hands felt just like two balloons Now I've got that feeling once again I can't explain you would not understand This is not how I am I have become comfortably numb

There's one of these calls in watch dogs 2. You can listen in on other people's phone calls, and it says that the person won a prize and to say "yes" to claim it

2 RepliesEdited by Lordsa Jar-Jar: 1/28/2017 5:55:37 AMHonestly, they can say so many things to provoke a "yes" response. There is no defense against this. Anyway, unless you actually give them personal info, how the hell are they going to sign you up for anything? If you went as far as giving those details, you're clearly wanting to buy the product anyway.
