I've tried to get some solid info on this perk but the google searches seem to vary. My question is, what does this perk actually do? Some claim a 5% increase to effective range, some say 10%, and I also read 20%. Does anyone know for sure?

1 ReplyIt increases the zoom on your gun. Which somehow makes it shoot further. I couldn't make that shit up if I tried. But that's apparently how the game logic functions. More zoom = more range.

10 RepliesMy question is. If you have a shotgun with rifled barrel and aggressive ballistics, does rangefinder even matter? When I compare range stats to my buddy who has rangefinder, the range is still the same even tho I don't have it. Does it just lessen the spread? I dunno.

It used to be 20% but now it is 10%.

3 RepliesYour best bet is to dig through the patch notes. If you can, find the original destiny guide (should be available online) and see what the vanilla perk did. From there do the math.

1 ReplyIn a weekly update a while ago, they said exactly what it does. If you can find it, you'll have your answer.

5 RepliesI believe it's 20% but not on every weapon,I think shotguns only get 4%

3 RepliesIn the original 2.0 weapons tuning, rangefinder was proposed to be reduced from 20% to 5%: https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/13147/7_Destiny-Weapon-Tuning-20 In the patch notes that followed, they ended up reducing it to 10%: https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/13474/7_Destiny-Update---09082015 This is why there's so much confusion on the topic. It's 10%

The higher the range on guns, it helps with damage drop off, as well as aimed accuracy.

Rangefinder actually increases the zoom distance of a weapon. By 5% for shotguns. By 20% for all other guns. This increases the weapon's effective range as damage drop-off is directly tied to zoom distance.

26 RepliesKeep in mind each weapon has a max range and cannot go over it no matter what perks you use. I had an answering accord with 3 perks that gave me a range boost. If I selected 2 certain perks it would max out the range leaving the 3rd to do nothing. If I took off one of the perks and put the other on, it would readjust showing the 3rd perk increasing the range but not maxing it out.

Rangefinder doesn't exactly increase the range as much as push the damage falloff point further back. Let's say you have a hand cannon with rifled barrel and one with rifled barrel and rangefinder. The rangefinder one will be able to do more damage at a distance the one without won't. One may hit 77 at 20 meters and the rangefinder will hit a full 87. Just puts the drop off point a little further back. That's why it's sought out on shotguns. You can hit a further range without the damage dropping off.

Shotguns can an increase of 5%, while everything else receives 20%.

Destiny wiki says 10% to range and 20% to damage fall off.
