D&D: To Create a Monster

Recently, my siblings and I have started our first D&D campaign. While I enjoy being the average player, I would like to try and be a Dungeon Master once and create my own campaign. If possible, I would like to try something with a very Lovecraftian feel to it. Obviously, this would include having the players investigating while fighting cultists and monsters. My ideal encounter would be for the players to fight the Dunwich Horror, itself. There, however, lies my problem. In the monster manual that I have access to (3.5 I believe) there isn't much that resembles your typical Lovecraftian horror. Does anyone have any suggestions as how to create such a creature or know a creature I can model the stats after? Your assistance would be most appreciate.

 • You could try Lords of Madness, it has a lot of Lovecraftian stuff in it. You might also want to look into Call of Cthulhu, a pen and paper game that sounds pretty much like what you're looking to turn your D&D campaign into, albeit with less combat.
also its "The Dunwich Horror", not "Horrer" sorry, that was just bothering me.
• My suggestion is look into supplemental books, like (be ye warned) the Book of Vile Darkness. That and some of the Epic-Level creatures.
