Racial Abilities in D2

Before I say anything, please let's all just pretend the game balance factor wasn't an issue. Just embrace the idea for fun and brainstorming sake. I don't think I've seen this anywhere else yet. Am I the only person that feels like which race you choose should make things different in gameplay? I mean, Racial Abilities are a core RPG concept. It makes sense, doesn't it? I mean, like I feel like each race/class combo should give you something special and unique. At the least, Two Passive and One Active abilities for each race class/subclass combo. Like, the Passive ability should be for each race regardless of what subclass you use. The actives are unique to that Race/Class/Subclass combo. One Race unique passive Class ability and one Active for each subclass too. Ex) Exo's are made of metal. It just makes sense that they should all get some sort of passive armor bonus just for being physically hardened. Let's call it (for sake of discussion) Battle Hardened. So, let's say that I choose to be a Titan Exo. I would get Battle Hardened for being an Exo, then I would get something extra as a Passive ability for being an Exo Titan such as, I dunno, Arms Expert. Because you are a living machine you gain some kind of bonus when using all weapons. Maybe, something like slightly faster upgrade rates or something. Then because you are an Exo Titan Striker, you get an Active Racial ability like Static Discharge. At any time you may sacrifice half of your health to release a massive electrical burst of energy. Comes with a cool down. Let's then say an Exo Titan Sunbreaker gets the Active ability Molten Metal. You can sacrifice a portion of your health to gain ammo. Reasoning: you're Metal and metal is ammo. Whatever. I'd like you all to expand and brains storm. I think this would be a really big deal. Race choosing should matter. Gimme your ideas on this, please.

        • You could do racial abilities and make it something as simple as a 2-5% increase of a stat, like the awoken would have a percentage increase to the intellect stat. That would give you a slight boost, but wouldn't be gamebreaking and should be easy to balance.

          • I like the idea, and I know you said don't talk about balance, but one racial ability/setup will always rise to the top (whatever that maybe), and therefore that one class will always be used. This would not be as much of a problem if you could change your race or class, but this is not the case. The 3 classes should be evenly used, same thing with races, and, unfortunately, racial bonuses would make that almost impossible. Great idea in theory, but the nature of classes and races make it a difficult idea to implement. Edit: And this applies to both pvp and pve.

          • PvP balance shouldn't matter at all. The game should be PvE oriented PERIOD. Buffs and Nerfs should not take place in accordance with the thoughts of the people who shun the actual focus of the game for the tacked-on half-baked game modes.

          • "Racial abilities" add gameplay significance to cosmetic choices and thus make them no longer cosmetic choices. If (as some people still seem to believe) playing as a female actually did make your hotbox smaller then choosing to play as a male place you at a disadvantage. Thus people's choice of sex would not be one of personal preference but a calculated one based on gameplay advantage. It's similar to adding bonuses to class items. If you're wearing a class item that gives bonus Vanguard Rep and decide to play Crucible you feel that you should probably switch to one that gives bonus Crucible Rep. Rather than just being an aesthetic choice one can be called objectively better than another in some situations.

          • An easy way to incorporate racial abilities would be to use Intellect, Discipline, and Strength. Each race is profieint with one, inefficient with another, and neutral with the remainder. This keeps the races balanced to a degree, different, and more importantly won't potentially break the game with a broken race/class perk combo.

If the bonuses only applied to PvE, then that'd be okay. Not much to case drama over. If they applied to [b]PvP[/b], now you are looking at a mess where everyone and their mother dogpiles onto whatever class has the best racial traits for Crucible. And that wouldn't be healthy for the game at all. EvE Online tried to do racial traits and it flopped for this very reason. If there were racial traits, then the only fair way to do it would be to either make them only beneficial in PvE or to have them do something so minuscule that they don't have any notable effects in PvP, like XP bonuses or extra glimmer. That would be reasonable.

                • Nah. Certain aspects of character customization need to remain just that. The classes have their own abilities, the races are part of our personal preferences that help make the characters unique to us. There's a reason I don't have an Exo character; I'm uninterested in being a robot. I would hate to have to choose to play as an Exo because its special abilities so happen to line up with my preferred play style. Furthermore, if reach race and class combo had their own combo abilities, we would need 9 character files to deal with in order to experience each one. That's insanity.

                  • In a discussion about having a playable Eliksni race in D2, I thought a cool additional choice of super (switch between elemental and this. could work for each race tbh) would be just pull out 4 guns and go Soldier 76 on them if Soldier 76 had more arms.

                  • I think each race should be tied to a stat: Awoken= int. Human= disc. Exo= str. The only effect would be a shorter cool down in each tier (so tier 5 would be like 20 sec/ 2:55min for disc. str., and int. respectively ) In order to keep the pvp crowd from crying, this passive trait could apply only to pve. I also like the idea of class and subclass perks, albeit passive ones. Warlock: a chain of ability kills (6+) has a chance of fully charging grenade or melee or shield Void walker specific perk: damaging self with abilities increases the size of explosions (stacks with annihilate ) Sunsinger: radiance activation insta-heals nearby allies. Maybe adds a short overshield. Maybe. Storm caller: getting hit with arc energy charges all abilities Titan: when mobbed by enemies, armor, agility, and recovery get a huge boost (again 6+ enemies) Defender: void type weapons ready, reload, & ads super quick (stacks with that one perk they have) Striker: greatly increases mobility when airborne (stacks with mobility exotics and includes super) Sunbreaker: increases duration of any buff including those given by other players I don't really play as a hunter so I dunno.

                  • It's a neat concept but destiny isn't an rpg. It's a fps. I just don't think they will put that kind of detail into it.
