The following thoughts were compiled after 200+ races in this year's SRL.
PROS:
—HUGE improvement over last year, and last year was pretty darn fun
—New tracks were perfect!
—All SRL gear can be infused!
—AMAZING loot tables. Shaders, ghosts, armor and weapons. I went from 393 to 399 just playing SRL
—Speeder gear combines last year's gear variants with ornaments
CONS:
—Some players still feel like sparrow riders can bump each other too much
—Non-SRL frame sparrows seem to turn sideways easier when being pushed
—SRL gear (aside from helmet/class item) has only one SRL-based perk
—BUG - Amanda Holliday/Ghost will sometimes incorrectly list you as in the lead when going through a portal
—BUG - Raid sparrows randomly explode, and not from too much boosting.
—Circuit gear earned through the quest is boring as it can't be affected by shaders. I don't think anyone's expecting amazing or anything, but shader support would be nice
SUGGESTIONS:
—To appease those who hate all the pushing, instigators of a hard push should take 25% damage. This means be too aggressive and you explode, but you're not penalized too hard for an accidental shove
—If that doesn't work, perhaps some selectable perks for sparrows -- one of which might be something that increases sparrow density, making them harder shove around. Perhaps another increases fuel recharge rate. Pick one or the other.
—Add additional perks to SRL arms/chest/legs like other armor
—Add the ability to use Xur's drives on common/uncommon/legendary, non-SRL sparrows, and give it the ability to grant desabilizers/tricks
—Add the ability to use a Xur drive on an existing Legendary sparrow to change the boost trail color
—Add SRL to the big crucible maps, specifically First Light and Bastion as they could easily have an overlay of banners/track walls, etc. Skyshock may not be quite as strong of a fit.
—SRL ornaments should dismantle into 1-2 Silver Dust
—Ranking up in SRL after rank 5 should reward strange coins/motes at minimum
EDIT: removed Momentum Gear. Apparently no new year 3 players can get it.

19 RepliesEdited by TheArtist: 1/1/2017 2:13:54 AMGood ideas. But the biggest problem...and issue that needs to be fixed is the physics. Its not that most people hate bumping. Its that you lose control over your sparrow and can't predict what it will do WHEN it gets bumped, because only the sparrow that is DOING the bumping is obeying the laws of physics. Only the sparrow that is initiating the contact behaves like an object with mass, momentum, and a directional vector. That sparrow that IS getting bumped behaves like a low mass object sitting still on a low friction surface. IOW---dropping the physics jargon----instead of two sparrows colliding like real world objects that will strongly resist being knocked off the line and direction that they are moving. Collisions in SRL are more like a hock stick hitting a hockey puck....only a lot less predictable. So people get PISSED because most racing games reward the driver who does the best job of controlling his vehicle and keeping the "line" around the track. But SRL in effect PUNISHES this rider, and rewards the guy who veers all over the track. So wiinning a race becomes as much a matter of luck as it is of skill....unless you can jump out in front and run away form the pack...and the game does everything possible to keep you from doing that. Hell, in one race I literally got knocked off the track to my DEATH by a rider who litearlly veered from one end of my screen to the other in a last ditch effort to catch a gate. He knocked me so badly off line that I hit an obstacle and exploded...and I was helpless to stop it. THAT is what is pissing people off...and I had to stop racing a few times this year because I could feel rages coming on from the mounting frustration of being asked to compete....but lacking any real control over the my vehicle because of the wonky physics that they clearly did NOTHING to fix since last year. Despite the community begging them to do so.

1 ReplyThe shoving shouldn't be messed with. It's part of the game and complaining about it is like complaining that people on the other team are shooting at you. That's how it's supposed to work. Everything else is reasonable.
-
Totally agree on the pushing. That was the most annoying part of SRL. Case in point: in the last race I participated in, I was heading for second place on Campus Martius, and while heading towards the finish line, right before the final three gates, three others caught up to me and pushed me into the wall. Instead of the second-place finish I had rightfully earned, I was forced into last place. Didn't race again after that. Got my Cryptic Dragon with a beast PvP roll, so it was worth it in the end, but yeah, the pushing needs to be reigned in a little.

1 ReplyHere's one for you.....racing with a friend and he isn't too great, usually places three or higher...so he's looking for ways to improve....checking out peoples' sparrows....one guy had 150 speed tumbler so I decided I'd see how much of a difference sparrow speeds make. So.....I pop on my 140 uncommon pre-order game stop sparrow.....I wait until the pack is HALF A LAP in front of me......I start and by lap three I have caught up and take THIRD PLACE! This should not be possible!!!

The drop rate for track emblems was absolute shit. I think I ended up completing 65 races across 3 characters, and after 3 weeks of racing I received a single emblem from Haakons a couple of days ago finally, but that's it. More often than not I would finish top 3 yet I would constantly see players in 5th or 6th getting emblems and other legendaries while we got blues or motes. The drop rate for the gear and shaders plus regular crucible drops were rather good tho, I only wish the class items dropped more and maybe some artifacts as well (could have added some cool SRL turned artifacts that changed your sparrow drive noise or something similar). Only ended up with 2 class items. On the bumping, I'm more on the hating it side. Personally I prefer to do my own thing and let others do theirs without interfering, so I'm not a bumper when I race unless I hit someone trying to make it into a gate. It always feels like people push me so much easier than I can push them back for some reason which is pretty annoying. There's nothing worse than having a good race spoiled by little Jimmies who only want to crash into everyone instead of actually racing. I don't mind a little jostling but it shouldn't be enough to knock people off course and screw up their run, especially when you have bounties and quests dependent on finishing in the top 3 or in first.

1 ReplyWait how do I get momentum gear now?

2 RepliesThe thing I dislike the most is the physics, like some of the hard 90 degree turns, I have a incredibly difficult time consistently maintain control, much less a line.... I've had some success with a combo of breaking, letting off on gas, and the side burst/bump thing to regain the line... But not always. For the life of me I cannot figure out how some of you can hop out and finish 15-20 seconds ahead of the pack.... That and random weird bursts of speed from other riders... How do they do that?

4 RepliesBiggest Problem with SRL is we're never going to see it again. It's an annual event, Destiny will end this year when Destiny 2 comes out.
-
2 RepliesAgreed. It is a big improvement upon last year and I have enjoyed it a lot!! One thing I would like to note is the random issues with my Timebreaker deciding to blow up when it wants to, yet it has a higher durability rating than the trick sparrows. Yes I am trying to break the record for Infinite Decent but it's a little annoying when my sparrow explodes when no one touched it ;w;"

26 RepliesSrl is a cope out to give people a chance to get loot they didnt otherwise earn. It failed horribly the first round and they didnt do any better this time. It disgusts me that they put chocolate and crimson shells (for an example) that i fought so hard for ( managed to get exactly one of each thats it) are being handed out to any idiot who can simply sit through a stupid ass race or worse pop a three o coins and let your three year old -blam!- around. Same exact bullshit as last time. Year two and year three have been a consistent downfall for destiny. Most of my year one friends don't even play anymore. They have removed all challenge from all activities and made it so every idiot can do it. Except for trials. But think of it like this. What if they made srl offer tickets to the lighthouse. How insane would that be? My 25 cents.
-
3 RepliesPros. NONE Cons. ITS A FPS MOT A -blam!-ING SHITTY WIPEOUT CLONE STOP MAKING US DO SHIT WE DONT WANT TO DO.

Eh tracks were not perfect. Earths rotating platforms are annoying and dont belong since u have to rely on rng that its not in the way when u drive to it. Big con u missed are physics. SRL physics are garbage. U get bumped and it sends u into the wall or u land and u do some weird belly flop crap.
-
2 RepliesSRL = infusion material That is it. Just another lame ass grind for nothing of use.
God people whine so much.
-
2 RepliesNo purple rain. Got 1 ghost and 2 matadors across all 3 characters. Disappointing. New SRL gear? Nice try but Momentum will always be the best cosmetic for SRL.

The entire SRL mode reeks of modern gameplay design philosophy that favors randomness over consistency. The randomness ensures that everyone has a chance at achieving victories required for the completion of bounties and subsequent ranks. From the complete lack of punishment for slamming all over the track, to BS physics, to random halts when landing, SRL is not made for competitive racing. Bungie needs to change the scoring system for ranking to a point system(based on pole position), where players who aren't good at racing can simply grind more races instead of being handed victories.

If SRL is going to become a thing, it would be a great idea to improve it properly so it doesn't become a drag. I like SRL. It's a refreshing idea and they did put some thought into it. But now that they got the basics down, it's time to tweak it. Adding a variety of Sparrows would help. I'm not talking about different looking Sparrows. I'm talking about maybe a heavier Sparrow. A lighter, faster but weaker Sparrow. A Sparrow that can store more fuel at the expense of speed or something. When all Sparrows are equally fast, it's not really much of a race as much as just whoever is lucky enough to end up in first place wins. It's frustrating to know from lap 1 that you're probably not gonna win unless you're LUCKY enough to have the people in front of you screw up. No skill involved. Make Sparrows more damn stable, dammit! I hate it when I bump into a pebble on the road and my Sparrow floats in midair for two years while everyone else passes me. And there's nothing I can do about it. Same with people accidentally bumping into others, like when the race starts and everyone tries to go for that first gate. Yeah, good luck. And yes, screw you if you bump into others on purpose. May you be forced to eat an entire bag of dicks. I honestly would be more into SRL if it wasn't because of all of this. It's an interesting concept but it's way too frustrating for me. Maybe if they fix it next year, I'll give t a shot again.

Went in to SRL with 5 friends. None of us were trying to bump each other in any way. The thing is, just passing each other would send somebody over the edge. I realize that there is obvious pushing and bumping that goes on, but I think a lot of it is just that Destiny just isn't a racing game.
-
I would be happy with simply not flying off to the right and exploding
-
Fix the gates. Sometimes it counts, sometimes it doesn't.
-
Wouldn't know. No vault space to play. :(

Edited by duzton: 1/1/2017 3:38:14 PMCon: drop rates for emblems, and class items are incredibly low. Edit: about the momentum set, I don't think everyone can just get it. I believe it allows one to reacquire it if they dismantled the items. I think you still have to have the book.
-
Actually there has been times when I've turned into the guy next to me and I can't push him no matter how much I try but he can push me even spin me around in some case it seems that bungie game engine does not under stand the laws of physics.
-
The physics annoy me most. They do not seem to be consistent or predictable at all. Something which you'd want if you try to get some good times.
-
The new maps were great, and the loot system made it so I could just drop back and run the course at my leisure, because bumping around in a clusterf-ck while a single rider inexplicably gains a 15 second lead isn't really my idea of a great time. I still don't understand how speed or the physics work, doesn't seem like all the sparrows have the same speed at all on a straightaway, and bumping other riders feel like I'm running into a brick wall when I seem to be made of tissue paper. The level up gear is incredibly plain. Who decided "beige" was a good color? And why can't we add shaders? I mean, what difference would it make? Also, why make a sparrow reward from the Dawning book be 150 when the competitive speed is 160? I know you can use it to win anyway, so why not just make the damn thing max speed? Some of the decisions are just baffling.
-
There's other point I would add. If you position yourself first for the first lap you may be lucky enough to dust everyone else. My last SRL race was a complete and absolute victory, dusting the other 5 riders with more than +30 seconds (or even more, since they didn't had time to finish and set their time mark). Adding it as a pro or con it's your decision. Also the bumper sparrows should not be that much of a problem as they are now. I mean, I did not wanted to bump into anyone, but sometimes I had since I would had missed the booster door. Also noticed people doing it on purpose, which as you said, should penalise them.
I'm already missing SRL. So much fun.
Id love for my SRL gear to be useable anywhere because it looks nice. Give it Int/str/dis rolls Give them normal perks I just want to wear my set because it looks nice and people like me are very picky about this type of thing
