As we all know, the sword was weakened quite a bit by the implementation of sword blocking, by increasing other weapon's strength in CQB, and by the addition of a number of AAs. I'm not a huge sword fan by any means and prefer to use my pistol in CQB situations, but right now the sword doesn't seem to have any real unique role. Perhaps with the adjust to melee speed and melee "block" duration sword blocking won't be a big deal, but if it is, it seems like sword might need a role outside of merely enhancing the range and damage on your melee strikes. After thinking through about how sword wielding functions and considering the Halo canon, I thought "Why not allow the wielder to partially deflect incoming bullets, reducing damage?" This might help reduce the number of sprinting sword wielders, as the sword wouldn't feel gimped without that combination, and would add another interesting role as a sword wielder could somewhat "tank" enemy fire to cover his teammates temporarily. Finally, it might even up the sword vs shotgun issue as it would give the sword some added utility.
So what do you think, would sword having the ability to partially deflect bullets (possibly by holding the melee button) be imbalanced, or do you think it could work?

The Energy Sword is not a lightsaber, and simple melee attacks should not do anythign to block the Energy Sword.

this is halo, not star wars.

I have seen -only in videos- Elites blocking bullets with there sword. I thought it was badass. I also thought it would make a cool thing in the real game. So, yes, deflecting bullets would be a nice touch to the energy sword now that you can block it with your melee. ALthough this shoudl probably only be an AA.

This wouldn't be a half bad thing, it could balance out the sword block haters. To be honest, this would make a perfect perfect elite AA. It would be their special AA. Unlike the rest. Evade is just sprint for elites to me. It would only last for about 5 seconds and also has a long recharge. I believe something like this could be balanced. I'd call it Arbiter Spirit but since this thread was dying, I'm pretty much bumping it. I'll make a different topic so I will not thread jack it.

Also, Shadowrun's demo is free on the market place....no excuses. Things you'll need to know because the demo doesn't explain it, all you have to do to block bullets is keep the crosshair thingy on the target shooting you. Sounds easy but it's hard as hell. Good luck.
You forgot to mention how he needs wired reflexes to block bullets.
Wired reflex just blocks more bullets. Plus, I don't think it's in the demo :/
Posted by: SquattingTurtle This Isnt star wars!!!! jk that would be cool
I was about to post that. And I don't think that it would work. The guy getting hunted down by the swordsman needs some way to defend himself. If the swordsman can deflect bullets, the guy who's getting hunted will most likely get killed all the time in those situations.
Posted by: MR JOEY BON It might vaporize the bullets on contact, but not melt them.
I lol'd.

Halo legends, the duel. Thel vs John, you see Thel blocking John's bullets with the energy sword. It's been done, looks cool, I like.
-
Or maybe the sword can be given a guard animation that totally blocks enemy melees?
I don't see how plasma would deflect bullets
Neither do I but Arby has done it before so its not impossible.
Also, it wouldn't do anything to help the sword/shotgun argument, because when a sword user lunges at a shotgun user, the shotgun user just pulls the trigger right before the slash hits. Aka point blaank. The shotgun is in your mouth.
I'm not talking shotgun vs sword in a direct confrontation, I'm saying, when would I want to use a shotgun, and when would I want to use the sword, and the shotgun basically would be a more useful weapon in most scenarios - no blocking, benefits from teamshooting/benefits teamshooting, more ammo if used properly, harder to be stuck, etc. etc. The only real advantage to sword currently is that it works well with sprint.
A lot of times the guy with the sword will have been right about to kill me, but then I was able to get that last shot off while he was lunging.
If he's mid lunge he won't be able to be blocking shots. If he sprinting at you he won't be able to block shots. This would just make sword more useful for non-sprint sword users. Nope. I don't see how plasma would deflect bullets. It might vaporize the bullets on contact, but not melt them. Also, it wouldn't do anything to help the sword/shotgun argument, because when a sword user lunges at a shotgun user, the shotgun user just pulls the trigger right before the slash hits. Aka point blaank. The shotgun is in your mouth. My main problem with this is the fact that it would make the sword too strong. A lot of times the guy with the sword will have been right about to kill me, but then I was able to get that last shot off while he was lunging. [Edited on 05.29.2010 8:47 PM PDT]

i've always thought the sword should be able to deflect bullets, so yes

No, not really. That could screw with my DMR 5-shot in close-quarters. :)
