Lanterns in the tower?
So far I have noticed four lanterns in the tower that you can pick up, similar to the components of the death zamboni in the raid. Two spawn on the ledge to the right of the hangar entrance, and two spawn up the stairs near tower north.
These can be dropped by pressing triangle (or whatever letter you xboners have) and then proceed to fly up, like - well like a lantern.
I dropped one of them below that pretty looking crystal in the sky, which shined when the lantern reached it.
Is there any more to this? Have four guardians tried dropping all four lanterns at the same time? Maybe it's just a nice touch from bungie, but I want it to be something bigger!

Update:
I played around with them for a bit and there seems to be a timer and the lantern will just disappear from your hands.
Also, they are sometimes a bit buggy and may be invisible until you put it down!
Update II:
Lots of good ideas!
Fearsome Monster has a nice idea that you have to place them in the correct positions in the sky so that they make a pattern/picture with the existing lanterns in the sky.
Satan Claus has an idea/solution that the lanterns play a piece of music when kicked up in the correct order, similar to the bells in the iron temple.
oOutsider62o has a theory that the lenses might show something hidden in or around the lanterns, so if anyone has a lens please let us know!

Yea i tried almost every thing from going lantern to lantern (releasing the lanterns as i get to the next one i have tried releasing them at each npc i trapped a few aboce the cryptarch in his tent to make it look like a bunch of exotics floating over him to tease us guardians about the exotic doop bs i think that was fixed cause i got a stag helm today . and i also tried releasing the lanterns and picking up a snow ball and throwing them at the lantern but it just phases through it . and i tested out the lava challenge completed and not completed as well with lantern . i didnt complete it with lantern in hand keep in mind though i cant achieve that LOL

It's just a metaphor for, guardians releasing there light into the sky. When you spawn turn around and look up and left. There are already lanterns "floating away"

You need enough people for every lantern, grab and run over to the big floating Christmas symbol and let them all go inside the symbol, and watch

9 RepliesIf you get a fireteam of six players to take the lanterns and and release them ontop of the fan over eververse and postmaster, the ghost of Bungie Past appears to apologize for having let a great game descend into a microtransaction driving, sweaty, elitist, toxic shitshow. If you release them all under the giant snowflake, the ghost of Bungie Present (Cozmo) appears to assure you that there are a few good things about destiny and make some vague insinuations that they're working on something that might improve things some day. If you take the lanterns and your full fire team jumps off the tower to their death at the same time, the ghost of Bungie Future (Deej) Appears to notify you that the servers are shutting down, your characters are being deleted, and Destiny 2 has been canceled due to overwhelming lack of player support.

More conspiracy: laterns disappear and reappear on a timer without touching them. Might point to the order to do something. Also there are 8 laterns i see now, 4 on each side. Maybe they will add one for each day of the dawning. Akso you can hold them and talk to npcs, so have you tried to talking to everyone while holding a latern? Tinfoil hat guy says it's a fallen trick and they will explode at the end destroying the tower.

2 RepliesThe Lantern's a nice little nod to the spiritual nature of the Holiday in the game world. Just like Winter Solstice festivals (like Christmas used to be in pre-Christian times) celebrate the passing of the darkest days of the year, and the hope of the return of the Sun and light/life to the world.... The festival is clearly a nod to the hope that Humanity has seen the worst of The Darkness....and an expression of Hope that we'll rebuild what has been lost.

You place them in The Urn next to Eris. She talks about placing her rock on Caydes map and how she is going to kill him and take his spot Funny little Easter egg that foreshadows what will happen in Destiny 2 between cayde and Eris
