The Story of Tom Clancy's: The Division and why it suffers

Making this post as a huge fan of the game and it's content. But when I got board I decided to hit up all the intell all throughout New York. The problem? Most of the story is in the intell, I feel the game needed to be completed in a certain way for you to understand it, ie clear the sector while gathering intell, which for most players of this game was not in there minds, we wanted to clear the story missions for the "ahem" STORY THAT IS HERE. Imagine the first time for us second wave agents who cleared the Lexington event center, your about to take on the leader of the rikers, Laura Barnett. She's a horrible woman who has tortured and killed her way through loads of JTF officers, but seeing how we never bothered or the plot wasen't properly given to us, the weight of that moment is lost. We don't feel any peace, no gratifying feeling of the sort. That goes with finding out about the first wave, Joe Ferro, Vitaly, Bliss, Scarecrow, we all felt short handed on the story. However once I collect all the intell, phone recordings, downed drones, missing agents (already done), incident report and echos, I will hopefully get a gratifying story.

  • It was the premise of the game that was a bummer. People have repeatedly demonstrated that in times of crisis, they band together and work to rebuild society. So it makes no sense that, in post apocalyptic America, everyone is trying to kill each other. If they took a page out of The Last of Us's book and added some kind of zombies, then it would have worked. And I know this is stupid to complain about, but in a devastated country where the industry has collapsed, who's producing the guns, grenades, and ammo? It just broke immersion. Bullet sponge enemies and bosses given silly, unthreatening names didn't help either. (and for the love of god, why do all Ubisoft games (except Assassins Creed) start with "Tom Clancy's"?)

    • The issue is nothing to really shoot for, the game prides itself on having a wide range of builds but there's really no point in grinding for them. There just isn't engaging content worth grinding for. When they finally put something worth playing in, survival, you can't even use your gear!

    • I agree entirely. The story could have been so much more than what it was. Even the first trailer with the original agents Ryan, and his crew had a better narrative. They should have started us out as first wave agents. Lvl 30 with all the abilities, and signature skill. Give us a tutorial on skills, and the basics. Let us choose our skills, and signature skill. The story would start from the beginning. We're activated. we don't know what's going on, but chaos is erupting in the streets, riots are breaking out everywhere. People are getting sick... Lots of people. We are losing control of the city. It's your job agent to attempt to maintain order in the wake of this catastrophe. At first things seem like we're getting a handle on things. Break up a few riots, stop looters from breaking in to shops. You know, assisting the JTF with stuff. ...Two days pass. Boom! Explosions rock Manhattan. The hospitals are full! "Well have to airlifting patients to others hospitals... But wait, they won't let us leave the island. Why?!" "We have reports of convicts escaping riker's island. We need you to investigate agent." You arrive on the coast. Bodys of JTF personnel are strewn about the area. Beaten, and shot.... Weapons missing. Follow the trail further into Manhattan. The trail leads to an auto repair shop, and you're greeted with gun fire! At a short skirmish with some riker thugs, you head In to find an elite riker. He's trying suppress you with his Lmg. You trade shots with him until he's wounded. He calapses to the ground.. *Cut scene*. He laughs, as he gurgles blood. "You might have got me fed, but this is just the beginning." Your agent grabs him by the shirt, and raises his head closer. "The beginning of what?! Answer me!" "... Th-th-the end, for...you..all...." His voice trails off as he dies in your grasp. You stand up, and and radio in. Command is asking you questions that you dont know the answer to.. "find the rest, and eliminate them." Your orders are clear. You leave the auto shop, and head further down the street. You arrive at a bank... The doors are busted, and you can hear the alarm going off... Gunshots ring out! You rush into the bank... As you enter, a riker hits you with an AR in the side of your head.. More grab you. You can't move... They're taking your weapons, and gear. It cuts to a first person perspective. Larae walks up to you, and begins to inspect your gear. "You look like a fed to me... Shouldnt have come here boy/girl (depends on the player.)" You still can't move... They've got you right where they want you. "You might think this city is yours, But you're wrong. It's ours!" She's pacing back and forth in front of you. You try to struggle free. "Oh, we got ourselves a fiesty one." "Too bad this I'd the end of the road for you..." She reaches for her gun as the camera backs away and zooms out to a 3-D map of Manhattan.. showing an orange circle where your agent was captured. It disappears... There are orange circles littering the map... Disappearing one by one... Overlapping radio chatter... Screams! Pleas for help. Calls for back up. Orders to retreat. The map fades from view, and the logo appears. [Theme song] Then you begin your meter existence as your green horn agent... Striving to save his/her city.
*bows out*
While I agree that this is certainly a problem, it is not the problem. The biggest problem IMO is the lack of a strong vision for what the game is supposed to be. It feels like a too many cooks situation taken to the extreme. Also, the netcode is terrible.

          • Eh, as long as all the lore is in game, I dont really care. It certainly wasn't a bad story. The way I see it, the basic story is for people who want to rush through, the extra lore collectibles are for the people who want 100%. Don't really see an issue.

          • The story is laid out perfectly fine. Intel is mostly just for people who want to learn even more about the situation. It mostly describes like what people did before the virus hit. Some intel is laid in missions in your direct path so you have to listen to it to proceed. For example: We know Larae Barret is an evil women who killed officers after she broke out of rikers. It tells you that in the mission. You walk through a room where she and her goons had tied up and murdered numerous agents. Theres a hologram in the middle of the room that even shows them doing it. The reason why Division struggled at first was because it was deemed too hard by most casual players. People thought the npcs had too much armor and killed you way too fast. On PC there were a shit ton of hackers ruining the game for everyone else. People also hated the dark zone because theyd go gather a bag of loot only to have a 4 man team kill them and take it and they were too weak to get it back. Theyd try to get another bag of loot only to have the same group come and kill them again. To put it as simple as possible: People found the game too difficult But now Massive has fixed that and people are starting to come back to it. The story was never criticized for not being explanatory enough
