Yesterday, I had new Internet installed by a different company. I'm in rural Nebraska, which leaves my two options at an unwired CenturyLink with 10mbps down and .5 up and a wired Charter with 60 mbps down and 4 up. I got the Charter connection. That alone brought my NAT type to 1, and gave me the most solid connection I've had in years. However, I also had my Netduma router delivered today. I haven't even optimized it yet. I just plugged it in and tinkered with the Geo-Filter. It showed that, from Nebrasker, it wanted to connect me to players from Europe and Mexico. I set my connection radius to 1500 miles to connect with US only hosts. My Ping allowance was set to 25ms max with strict mode set as well. Strict mode only kicked me once. All of my connections were Chris P. Bacon af. Only a couple yellow bars in a lobby lagged just a little bit. All shots were registering and I wasn't getting killed through walls. I don't even mind playing people at my skill level but it's even less frustrating when everything functions correctly. It's amazing to see how much better of a player I actually am than what I thought, because lag isn't holding me back.
tl;dr Wire your connection, invest in a Netduma Router (that's $50 set aside per paycheck in order to afford it in 2 months if paid bi-weekly), and Bungie's matchmaking just needs to focus on being stricter with the host location of the player pool to ensure better connections.

3 RepliesStrict mode boots me 9 times out of 10. I'm an average skill player and connections are still worse in this game than any other game. NetDuma is a waste of money for Destiny and the problems that plague this game come from the p2p network Bungie uses. Nothing will change significantly until Destiny 2 at the earliest.

3 RepliesMaybe it's cause you finally went wired

1 ReplyI have a netduma and they told me strict mode is only for dedicated servers ..

6 RepliesTo bad you didn't live in a place that could give you fiber lol

4 RepliesSince when does connection speed affect your NAT type?

6 RepliesThis is a big reason all the streamers all know bungie is full of it when they talk match making by connection. They are peer hosting across the damn globe and saying connection is favored above all else. Hell no it isn't. Any one who has done similar to what you are doing knows it too well. Maybe some day it will change but don't hold your breath this bunch seems to make most of the more serious decisions about the game while very stoned or something.

1 ReplyNet Duma doesn't work well with destiny. Strict mode will get you kicked out of lobbies when you load in and the ping doesn't work at all. Best bet is to just load up the destiny profile and use the geo filter. It works well but you'll still get lag when playing against fireteams. Most of the solo players you play against will be in your search area. You'll see yourself matching with players outside of area when going against fireteams. Also I've noticed when trying to join a party chat with friends outside search area I get nat issues. I have to add people you play with to the allowed list.
