First, I'll explain how it could be done. Be advised, it's a solution that defies convention. If there were a conventional solution to the problem that worked for both sides, Bungie would have done it. After I explain the mechanics of it, I'll address both Bungie's and players' primary concerns. This solution, crazy as it sounds, actually addresses BOTH.
Simply, it gegins with Xur selling four new items. The first is called a Basic Weapon Upgrade. Purchase this item for 7 Strange Coins and combine it with 10 legendary marks and a Rare weapon on your choice. This turns the Rare weapon into an infusible Legendary version of itself. It works with any weapon class, but will not alter the weapon's perk set. This upgrade also brings the weapon's Light up to 300 (if it's lower), and sets its minimum player level at 40.
Essentially, this allows you to make Rare weapons legendary, with the penalty of a reduced perk set. However, if you can't get a Bane of the Taken but want a super hard hitting MG, you can use one of these on a Rift Valley and you have a poor man's version of it.
The other three items Xur sells are Void Weapon Core, Solar Weapon Core, and Arc Weapon Core. Each runs 17 Strange Coins. Each can be infused with a kinetic weapon that's had the Basic Weapon Upgrade (but not a normal legendary) and an Exotic Shard. This makes the gun exotic, and gives it a burn of the element indicated.
ADDRESSING BUNGIE'S CONCERNS:
* This will reduce the variety of weapons used. No, it won't. As a matter of fact, there are a plethora of Rare weapons that players just dismantle without even bothering to look at them. How many Lampads and Trax Devotios and Mos Arias have suffered that fate? Suddenly, players will have to think carefully before breaking up that rare gun.
* This will make certain weapons overpowered. Again, no. Yes, there will be elemental primaries that give you an advantage on Burn strikes and against weapons with certain shields. However, those weapons will come at a sizable cost: the player will have to give up their exotic slot, and will have a reduced perkset.
ADDRESSING PLAYER CONCERNS
* There's only a few available weapons with an elemental burn. Not no more. There are a ton of good Rare weapons out there, with similar profiles (Impact, Reload, etc) to their Legendary counterparts, just fewer perks and impossible to infuse. The Raids didn't provide a good Void pulse rifle, did they? No Solar Handcannon either. And while there was a nice Solar Scout rifle, it was of the low-impact variety; those of us who like our Colovances and Baddgers didn't have an equivalent. That's available now.
* But I lose my exotic slot, and have fewer perks. Yes you do. Elemental primaries are a powerful asset. It's been over a year since I had a loadout with one in it, and I still have fond memories of it. If you want that gift to return, a price should be paid. Further, that price should be high enough that these weapons will not see universal use, but be regarded as the specialty tools that they are.
CONCLUSION
Yes, it's unconventional. Maybe even a little odd (appropriate, given the source). But in my humble opinion, it would give the players a wider variety of elemental primaries than they could have hoped for. It would also ensure that more weapons saw use. Odds are 999 to 1 it will never happen. Because it's unconventional, I'll probably get a bunch of negativity from players. Bungie will ignore it completely. And except for Zhalo, kinetic primaries will be the reality indefinitely. But I still take satisfaction in the knowledge that I came up with a solution that would have worked.
Feel free to ask questions or express concerns. Valid concerns or what you see as a better solution will be appreciated. Insults will only be laughed at.
EDIT: An oft-suggested alternative: instead of Xur selling the weapon cores, they could instead be added to the available raid loot for Wrath of the Machine. That would encourage people who haven't done the raid as of yet to give it a try.

1 ReplyWhy do you guys keep going on about things that bungie have said they've made their decision on? Elemental primary weapons are gone, deal with it. Matchmaking changed for the worse and won't be changing back, deal with it. Old raids won't be brought up to current light, deal with it. ToO works how it does and won't change. Deal with it. So many other things... Just play the game that's in front of you and stop being so entitled, believing foolishly for some reason that by putting a post on a forum things are going to change the way you want them to. Christ on a bike, honestly I've been gaming for my entire life (I'm 37) and never have I seen a community believe they can somehow influence the development process of a game in such a way. Lunacy I tells ya.

1 ReplySome rare weapons have pretty rediculios perk rolls if you look at them.
-
1 ReplyI thoroughly approve, and think this would add much needed variety and damage difference to primary weapons. Well done, guardian! It would also be nice to upgrade common and rare level armor such as class items. Especially some of the Hunter cloaks like Squid Pro Quo, Warlock armor like Seraph Reform II, and Titan armor, etc... Chroma should also be an option on almost every armor and weapon as well. The one think I still don't understand with infusion and Legendary marks is that in Bungie's attempts to simplify the currency and material in Destiny we have ended up with more different kinds and if differing materials continue to be added it might become another annoying drawback, but other than that I don't really see any issues to this upgrade system besides what Bungie might call "balance."
-
Shut up Meg
-
2 RepliesBungie would need to reprogram a lot of new legendaries and exotics. Considering the time they need to solve the problem with the class armor for the exotic quest maybe you can see this at the end of the year ...... 2032
-
1 ReplyThis is a sick idea, with good mechanics. I hope bungo sees this and does something similar to it.
-
1 ReplyI had a different idea. The way you had to farm for planetary materials for the Exotic Sword quest, could be used for getting elemental weapon cores. Some planets would have certain cores, or 2 cores on one planet. This would help people a lot, by practically handing them an elemental primary and planetary materials to upgrade their weapons. Bungie could make it require 10 of the special materials to get the elemental core to try and make it balanced.
-
I think you should get a weapon core as a guaranteed drop for the first time you complete the challenge mode each week
-
Nooice
-
Its meant to be (for example) solar secondary, arc heavy, void subclass
-
2 RepliesGood idea I hope bungie does something similar
-
2 RepliesSo when I buy those Cores what will be the point of using Kenetic Primarys when the elementals will completely outclassed them. Dumb idea is dumb
-
Good idea dude
-
2 RepliesI like the idea. Just want some clarification when it comes to upgrading the rare to legendary. Legendary weapons have more perks than rares, so how will the additional perk rolls be decided when upgrading? Will they be RNG?
-
1 ReplyBunp, holy shit! This is a fantastic idea and would definitely contribute to variety in Destiny. I'd like this post a thousand times, but that's just liking and unliking 500 times, so ill just like it once.
-
9 Repliesbecause vision of confluence is "low impact" your post is invalid because of how assanine that claim is
-
3 RepliesMake raid primaries have a burn again. When you infuse those raid weapons into other primaries, the elemental burn is transferred.
-
2 RepliesBungie doesn't want elemental primaries in the game anymore. Stop crying. Use Zhalo if you want an elemental primary so much.
-
1 ReplyBut then what will make the raid weapons special? Will they come with burns? And if they do what will set them apart from the upgraded legendaries?
-
2 RepliesI think we need to accept the fact that elemental burns on primaries are gone and not coming back. We also need to get over the fact that Bungie's reason for getting rid of them was utter stupidity and an insult to players. Move on my fellow players. Even if elemental primaries came back, who cares... hand cannons are weak as water pistols in PvE. Auto rifles fair only slightly better. Pulse rifles are a joke. Scouts sit reasonably well. Buff primaries to the point they are good in PvE... then look at adding burns.
-
Just an fyi, all the y1 trials adapt primary weapons could have any type of burn on them. I had a vold, solar, arc messenger. Same goes for the highest prison of elders from year 1. You could get primaries that had random burns on them.
-
Edited by BERSEKAEL: 11/25/2016 3:56:38 PMBungie has a huge data base... Easy, check the less popular primary exotics, and add burn instead of ornament.
-
no complaints get me a rare triple tap, outlaw or rangefinder hc with rifled barrel (preferably 3) and i'll have everything i ever need, because even without burns i'm going to make sure i have all 3 elements every time for those darn shields.
-
1 ReplyDead horse beaten to death
-
7 RepliesOr just let use infuse them into regular legendarys who cares the game is near death anyway

Love this
