Destiny Refer-a-Friend Code Didn't Work With Friend

So, I have played Destiny since launch. I bought the initial two expansions day one as well, pre-ordered The Taken King and Rise of Iron, bought the digital special edition stuff, bought silver to support the game, and recently bought a whole PS4 and Destiny plus its expansions for my best friend for us to play it together. We have been having a great time playing the game and collecting loot and exploring, and we plan to play the game together long-term, but over the past week or so something has been eating away at me. Earlier on, I remembered about the Refer-a-Friend system and so I sent my friend a link to connect our accounts, but the account link didn't work and we didn't know why. Maybe it had something to do with me getting him a second-hand copy of the game and having gotten TTK and ROI at the same time over a week after he first got the game; the instructions for the program are pretty unclear and overly specific regardless, and are confusing as a result. We quickly forgot about the Refer-a-Friend stuff, but recently I remembered what happened after hearing about the exclusive sword in particular (I love swords and melee play styles in general) and I feel a bit cheated out of the rewards that come with the referral program, considering I did buy my friend the whole console and game (or more specifically pitched in a bunch of the money needed). I'm here mentioning it now because my brother recommended it, though my friend himself doesn't really care much, but on the other hand I do, in principle or otherwise. Now, I know a shader, sparrow, some emotes, and in particular the swords shouldn't bother me that much, but they are. Maybe it's that I feel cheated out of something I feel like I rightfully deserved and earned, or that the game doesn't really acknowledge my friend as I as proper partners and pretty much downplaying our friendship in some odd symbolic way, or it's more related to OCD or completionism, but either way it has been bothering me. I know the Refer-a-Friend system has been criticized for being so unfriendly to veteran players who already referred their friends to the game before its implementation, and in my current situation I understand why better. I've never liked exclusive content, even if it is mostly aesthetic, and the way it is with such a strict time limit is so silly. The lingering question of if my inventory and account linking status from Destiny 1 will carry over to Destiny 2 next year just compounds the frustration. Even if no admin can help do something to fix what should be a non-issue, I'll hopefully feel better having gotten this off my chest. My PSN account is Cavou108 and my best friend's account is J-M-Bres994. If anyone needs more proof that I mean what I say then I'll be happy to do anything I can to cooperate. Thanks for listening.
