• Well I've got a wireless modem (Connects over the 3G network since out telephone cables can't support ADSL) and it's of course connected to my Mac using WiFi, I'm usually getting around 300-400Kb/s (around 2000-3000kbps) which is about average for Australia.

  • You can always look on SpeedGuide.net for tweaks for your operating system. It gives you in depth tweaks for your registries (nothing dangerous, you're not deleting anything, just changing some values). I also have several open ports on my router, I always use MAC filters for all devices I add to it (in addition to using WPA2 passcodes), and I port forward my 360 through my router to avoid NAT (which is basically the router trying to assign one IP address for all devices on the LAN - easier to just assign an address and forward it)

A kilobyte is 8 kilobits. Which means a 1000 megabit internet will only download at 128 mega bytes.
In my quest to throw out a zinger, I fail to get my point across. Yes, they are different things. However, they are very closely related, and the OP needs to realize that SLOW INTERNET IS SLOW and quit whining.

  • well, being that 200kb/s isnt even 4x as fast as dial up, i would say that's slow. [Edited on 05.14.2010 8:40 PM PDT]

On topic tho, if you are torrenting something then you would get anywhere between like 10 - 1000kb/s. Regular use is much faster than that.
he may mean 54Megabits per second 54 megabits = 6.75 megabytes, which is more reasonable [Edited on 05.14.2010 8:22 PM PDT]

    • Omg, The Flood is horrible with networking. Bits/8 = Bytes. Bytes*8 = Bits. Simple enough. Examples: A standard 6Mbps cable internet package. Or 6144Kbps. 6144/8 = 768Kb/s maximum bandwidth, not including bursting. A 256Kbps DSL connection. 256/8 = 32Kb/s Simple? I'd say a good rule of thumb is: Anything 2Mbps or higher would be decent. As for me, I have a 768Kbps connection and it's pretty darn slow.

    • If your downloading it from steam, you should be getting around 1 Mb per second. At least, that's what I get over wireless.

    •
Posted by: jmullen324 I'm running 54 MB/sec and I think it's average.
That's the raw maximum transfer rate for on 802.11 wireless connection. If you were ever able to achieve a speed anywhere near that in practice, you must be some sort of witch.

    • 200 KB/S download speed is alright. You can download about 1 Gig per hour.

    • A "fast" connection would be at least 5 Mbps (5000 kb/s). Of course, it all depends on how you define "fast".
