I have been doing quite a bit of research and investigation in my spare time to piece together the events that led to Eriana 3 constructing that famous ill fated Fire Team that went into the Hell Mouth to never see the light of day again.
Below I am going to lay out, based on grimoire and in game texts, the events that took place and eventually resulted in the Crota's End raid.
Something personal first.
Through my research and also in an attempt to keep myself sharp as a writer I have been writing out an unofficial series titled Chronicles of the Ascendant. I say unofficial because the term "fan fiction" seems to conjure hate and contempt. Though I understand why this may be the case (many stories rip canon apart and try to fit the pieces into a mold of its own) there is a stigma attached to the creative works of art that people put out for others to enjoy, critique, and relax with. The purpose of my writings is to compliment and accompany the established story and the grimoire of Destiny. I'm not producing anything that disagrees with the story or attempts to twist events into some Star Wars fantasy or other work of fiction. I will link my most recent entry and ask for constructive feedback and comments as I am truly trying to get myself established as a writer.

Now on to the heart of the monster...I mean matter.
Phase 1 - The Hive and the Great Disaster
The Hive at some point in time invaded our (Solar) System during the Golden Age.
The presence of the Hive was first detected on the moon as they had seeded it and began to multiply. (See Ghost Fragment Ocean of Storms 2)
They came to Earth and were encountered for the first time there by the Guardians in the Rusted Lands.
The Guardians and Hive battled one another at the Battle of Burning Lake with the Guardians barley being the victors.
Shaxx was present at this battle, saw the power of the ascendant swords and warned the Consensus to stay away from the Hive until further research and knowledge was available. (See Razelighter Grimoire Card)
The Consensus organized a full scale assault on the moon with Guardians numbering in the thousands.
The battle went horribly as Crota and his disciples had already begun, for an unknown amount of years, turning Luna into a warmoon and breeding ground.
The battle ended for reasons that were initially never stated. Crota was summoned back to the ascendant plain by Oryx to make plans for complete victory over the Traveler. (See Oryx: Rebuked Grimoire)
Both the Guardians and Hive ceased their fighting with the former placing a ban on lunar travel (see Ghost Fragment: Ocean of Storms) and the latter continuing to make Hive babies. "We gave up the Moon to keep the Hive away from Earth. We hoped that would be enough for them." - Ghost, The Dark Beyond Mission intro Dialogue
Phase 2 - The Attack on Crota
Eriana 3, a Praxic Warlock who was present at the Great Disaster, organizes an unsanctioned Fire Team consisting of (Titan) Vell Tarlowe, (Hunter) Omar Agah, (Hunter) Sai Mota, (Warlock) Toland, the Shattered, and (Hunter) Eris Morn. This group formulated a plan to go to the moon and strike down Crota ending his reign of terror and avenging the thousands of lost Guardians who died in the Great Disaster. (See Crota's End Grimoire Card)
Up to this point nearly everything is cut and dry except how and why the Great Disaster actually ended and what happened to Crota which Toland reveals (Oryx: Rebuked) after Oryx has been slain. Toland revealed to the others that "Crota's presence in our world is a shadow. That its true power resides in a nether world forged by his will. We must pass through a keyhole between realities, navigate the seething midnight of Crota's world-mind, and overthrow the ascendant champions that gather to his throne." This is significant and will be very important soon. (See Crota's End Grimoire Card).
Many people believe that Crota's physical body was destroyed by Eris Morn and the others but that they were unable to finish the job due to misleading statements made in game. Eriana 3 and her fire team never faced Crota during their own raid and they all died in obscurity except Eris and Toland.
In the Rise of Crota Grimoire card we are told that Eris "watched as Crota's soul rose from the abyss, his sword cracking the Moon's surface with every stroke, and countless Guardians, losing their light to his wrath." She saw him manifest for the first and only time during the Great Disaster.
During the Wakening mission intro dialogue Eris Morn says the following "Six of us went down into that pit. I was vain enough to believe we could defeat Crota, but the Hive caught his soul before we could destroy him and then there was only death. We failed. You cannot. Destroy the soul of Crota." - Eris Morn. This would make it seem that the 6 Guardians who went down into the pit nearly destroyed Crota but this isn't the case.
Remember that Toland told them that they needed to go into the ascendant realm to kill Crota. They never made it that far though. Crota was no longer operating in our plain. He had been summoned away by Oryx during the Great Disaster. In the Eyes of Crota Grimoire Card we are told that the Light of Eris and her teammates is being offered to wake Crota which means he was still dormant/slumbering. The Swarm Princes grimoire card tells us that they are striving to revive him along with Omnigul and Sardon.
How They Died:
The team reached the Temple of Crota where everything began to go wrong (see Sardon, Fist of Crota Grimoire Card). At the entrance to the Temple it is assumed that Vell Tarlowe was killed by the combined forces of Verok, Alak-Hul and their Thrall children. Why do I say all three because of the other flavor texts and statements in game.
"Few of us made it beyond the canyon. The rocks cracked apart, Hive waiting in ambush. It was worse for the ones who made it inside. Stay alive." - Eris Morn, The Wakening Mission
"GHOST: Eris, why did the Darkblade rise against Oryx?"
"ERIS: The Wizard Verok was his mate. He slew a legion of Thralls in her name. Marched on the King's throne, at the head of an army built on hate and pain."
"We called her Verok; it was her and her Thrall that FINALLY overwhelmed him." - Eris Morn, Mark of the Duskborn
"A pretender to the crown is dead. Know this, Guardian: Alak-Hul was there... when we went down into the pit. What you have done... you have done in their names: Toland, Sai Mota, Omar, Eriana-3, Vell Tarlowe." - Eris Morn, The Sunless Cell Mission Dialogue
Vell Tarlowe seems to have held his own against both or one (Verok & Alak-Hul) but was finally swarmed and overwhelmed by her Thrall.
Omar Agah - Tortured to death and fed to the Hive brood by the Heart of Crota.
Eriana 3 - Died in Radiance but eventually overcome by the Hive.
Sai Mota - Killed by Omnigul
Toland - Physically destroyed by Ir Yut but granted passage into the Ascendant Realm.
Eris Morn - Lost her eyes to the Hive and crawled around in the Moon for unknown amount of years.
The team failed miserably and sadly. They never reached Crota. He wasn't even woken because they were all killed. That is why the Dark Below was an expansion.
Edit 1: I forgot one other line that suggests that Vell had a direct conflict with more than just Verok. "Alak-Hul, the Darkblade, is laid low. And thus Vell Tarlowe is avenged." —Eris Morn, Darkblade Helm
Edit 2: I overlooked the Oryx: Rebuked grimoire card originally which stated that Crota was summoned back to their throne universe by Oryx during the Great Disatser. I've edited my post to reflect the changes.

Edited by foxburton99: 4/22/2017 9:39:19 PMThis is really good work Although I believe it is stated in either one of the Warlock Ghost Fragments or another Great Disaster grimoire that the battle of Mare Imbrium (Great Disaster) ended because Crota slew almost all of the Guardians there until the few survives finally fled the lost cause. After all, the grimoire does say "it went well at first" but changed when Crota rose with his army of Knights. Why Crota didn't chase us to Earth to finish us off is unknown, but that battle certainly ended with us retreating Edit: oh and Eris says she actually cut out a Hive's eyes and then surgically replaced her own so she could see in the oppressing Darkness. At least I'm relatively sure

7 RepliesI think eris actually sacrificed (cut out) her eyes and replaced them with hive eyes to blend in. This masked her presence among the hive for a long time until she was able to finally escape. Now she's back, but it's been at a cost.... she used what she thought was a means to survive, which is why she has a connection to the hive now.... she can transport guardians out of crotas chamber, she senses the presence of mighty hive beings (crota, oryx, Alak-hul, malok), and has a lot more hidden "stuff" up her sleeve. I could even see her eventually turning on guardians since her connection to the light has been severed (no more ghost or barely any light left in her). Maybe she ingested a worm like the hive do, but it hasn't fully taken over or changed her, but it will down the road. She's part hive at this point, with hive eyes and streams of darkness constantly running down her face, so it's just a matter of time til she turns on us, but for now, she helps because she still feels connected to the guardians and the light (if only in a metaphorical sense at this point).

4 RepliesPlease do this for oryx or book of sorrows. I don't dislike the grimoire, however I do the hive. I dislike everything from their missions to their dedicated music, that is part of destiny's OST. I enjoyed this because it laid everything out with no misconstrued information. Please consider doing this for oryx or book of sorrows.

2 RepliesExcellent work there. I see what you are doing with your writing, and I like it. Enhancing our understanding of the Destiny universe by incorporating the known story (in-game and grimoire) and figuring out the story that links the 2 is what I'm all for. There was only so much Bungie could do when they rewrote the story. To read all these theories of the story from our lore experts and writers like you are what make me excited for what the future may bring to this games story. Please keep up the good work!

Excellent post guardian, was a well written and a pleasure to read!

6 RepliesThe real reason why eriana's team failed was "Light level requirements not met" Eris survived because she is a hunter and had invisibility+ smoke grenades+ don't touch me gauntlets

14 RepliesEdited by A Rising Wind: 10/27/2016 6:31:21 PMThus we have among the most misinterpreted lore topics in destiny, imo. Many think Eris and the fireteam had a failed raid attempt. Not true. You are correct, they never even fought Crota. He wasn't even there. And where they went and most died is not where the raid is. there is no evidence they ever entered the hellmouth where the entrance to Crotas throne world is located. All they were trying to do is stop the hive from waking Crotas soul. Basically they died doing what we did in the wakening story mission in the temple of Crota. Granted, their version was much harder because Omnigul, Alak-hul, a lot of Crotas champions, etc were there. Ir Yut was likely there too since we know Toland spoke with her, unless Toland somehow escaped the Temple, made it to the hellmouth and solo'd his way to ir yut but the former is more likely. Eris and team never even made it to the start of the raid.

And then you realize how helpful firefly could have been if they had it.

2 RepliesThe reason the term fanfiction is met with hate is because people in that community generally produce low quality content

Tldr for anyone; They all went in the "We've woken the Hive!" entrance and died by (except Eris and kinda Toland) numerous Hive Champions. Nice post by the way.

2 RepliesIsn't there a card that details how Eris stole her current eyes from the Hive Knight who ripped hers out?

This is better presented than anonpig.

This lore fascinates me. I will definitely give your story a look. This and more so the vault of glass is the most interesting thing ever

She used lfg... The squeaker 10 year old had watched a video and told the rest of the fireteam what to do. Because that's what the squeakers do right. So they listened and well..... eris got fvcked up.

5 RepliesI would love to read some grim cards about the fireteams I play in. Fireteam all jumped off a ledge because a raid mechanic was botched. Fell off a ledge. Fired a rocket into a thrall. Backed into a bubble while firing a rocket launcher. Stood in SIVA swarm. Fired rocket into back of a teammate who crossed right in front of you. I'm sure Crota woman would put these much more eloquently.

6 RepliesPretty good, though you have missed a few things. 1: The objective of Eris's fireteam was to enter Crota's ascendant realm and end him once and for all. This is confirmed by Tolands summary "We must pass through a keyhole between realities, navigate the seething midnight of Crota's world-mind, and overthrow the ascendant champions that gather to his throne." This of course referring to the three areas of Crota's raid; the thrall maze, the bridge and Crota's throne. Toland also mentions using ascendant blades to kill Crota, just like we do in the raid. However it was not so simple, as explained by Toland in order to defeat Crota they had to first kill his disciples which is why they did not head straight for the ascendant plane and instead descended into the hellmouth. 2: There is more information information about the descent than you think. Vell tarlowe was it seems indeed killed at the entrance to the temple of crota by alak hul, verok and her thrall. I suspect he tried a direct attack on Verok, ignoring and underestimating her thralls as Eris states in the quest "enemy of my enemy". This is where things get more complex. We know that the fireteam were seeking disciples of Crota and it is implied by Toland that the disciples baited the fireteam to get them to descend deep into the hellmouth "With their great age comes even greater wisdom. I have no doubt the Hive led us here with intent.". Through a small leap of logic we can then assume the place they were lead to is the thrall maze or as toland calls it "The path of Crota's Hand". This is because when you fight the hand of Crota on earth, he summons endless numbers of thrall until you eventually slay him, very similar to the thrall maze. Eriana's ghost also mentions a "thick shroud" which could be interpreted as the weight of darkness. Here the team somehow gets split up with Eriana and Sai-mota pairing up. Omar is also captured and presumed dead. Sai-Mota then tries to escape the hellmouth, with Eriana staying behind to complete her mission or die trying "I vowed to avenge them all, and this curse I will carry until my final death." However Sai mota didn't make it, Omnigul throws her into the hellmouth and she falls to her death. "Mota was so close, clawing her way out with bones torn from acolytes. Her FALL - Omnigul." and "A rattling shriek, the crunch of bones and the fading echoes of a brave woman's last laugh" We know Toland and Eris split up at some point, as Eris is not present when he finds Eriana before confronting Ir yut. It is unclear whether Eriana goes on without toland or if he simply chats to Ir yut and doesn't help Eriana but she is eventually ended by the liturgy of ruin. Eris, hiding from the hive, somehow witnessed this without hearing the song, hence how she survived. "It was just as this when I walked in the dark, their(deathsingers) wretched songs in the wind as Erianan fell." "In that last moment she seemed as luminescent as the sun, and I wished to be so brave." All that is left is Eris witnessing the torture of Omar and it is unclear whether she witnesses this before or after the death of Eriana. That was a lot longer than I expected but there, I filled in some gaps for you.

21 RepliesSo does this mean that my guardian is much stronger than all past guardians? Serious note, Eris Morn probably suffered the most among her fireteam. She was left blind on the moon for years. Wth?
-
7 RepliesSo the traveller..... No really 🤓 do I really have to buy Destiny 2 and 3 just to find out 😡 ⬆️⬆️⬇️⬇️⬅️➡️⬅️➡️ BA

2 RepliesSo is the dead Titan in the moon a random? Can't be vell because those events happened wars ago and the ghost said a guardian was here recently, and it can't be rezzyl because his story was long long ago as well
-
2 RepliesI just realized, this makes sense. When we open the doors to the Temple of Crota, we face Verok and let Eris out. This fits nicely with the continuity of Eris's timeline. However, we only face Verok, but not Alak-Hul. The question then is, when did Alak-Hul fight against Oryx? It seems it had to be between when Eris and her fireteam went into the pit and when we inadvertently rescued her.

You have to kill his generals first because they are crota, he split his physical body into them
