So this is just something I've wondered about for some time: why does the Speaker wear a mask? The grimoir says that there is always an anonymous priest known as the speaker, but why must the speaker be anonymous? Just curious as to what you guys think.

So it's doesn't fuel the argument that "oh the speaker is a hunter/warlock/Titan Eco/human/awoken and he's basically the Pope so if he's an Exo warlock than Exo warlocks are the best

1 ReplyBungie "maybe we could make a quest to discover what's under the mask." Activision "Nah let's make it cost 500 silver"

1 ReplyI don't have time to explain, why I don't have time to explain.

12 RepliesI wonder about the Speaker too. Is he actually in communication with the Traveler? If so, how? Why would the Traveler choose to speak through one person rather than to humanity as a whole? Also why does he never have input on missions and strategy? If he speaks for the Traveler, wouldn't the Traveler have useful information to share about the minions of its mortal enemy? Oh, wait. The Traveler's dead, right? So why are we even listening to this guy?

The Speaker is confirmed human, he is Classless because of his position (no his robes DO NOT mean he's a Warlock, he was actually most likely a Titan, although he was elected as Speaker during a time when Guardians were called Chosen and Classless weren't defined), he is one of the oldest Guardians and is gifted with Dreams of Alpha Lupi (recorded in the grimoire), he was one of the leaders of the Chosen in the Faction Wars and helped the Chosen realize their purpose, and he was elected by vote to be the Speaker. I assume that he wears the mask so that people don't think of him as an individual, but as a conduit the Traveler speaks through. If you could see his face, you'd automatically think "person" when you see him instead of "the Speaker for the Traveler" His name is not known, at least to my extent of knowledge

#bungie was to lazy to design a face

8 RepliesEdited by Garfield Peanut Butter!: 11/1/2016 12:44:00 PMmy question is: is Shaxx and the speaker wearing masks over their helmets?
-
4 RepliesProbably because he's ugly as -blam!-.
-
3 RepliesBecause he's actually Donald Trump. We need to build a wall to keep the fallen out of the city.
-
The mask is like the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal I assume, or else people would know he went missing, then before too long the guards would show up sweet rolls in hand to stop the criminal scum Hope it helped Nano

To prevent influence caused by the factions when he needs to take a leak
-
13 RepliesHow can he even see through any of his masks?
-
4 RepliesHe's anonymous because he must be nothing other than the Traveler's voice. His family, friends, past life, even his name is unimportant when compared to being the Speaker.
-
Because it looks nice
-
1 ReplyMaybe it mutes ambient sensory input, such as touches, smells, light, and sound (excluding noise directed at him specifically, like speech) so that he can better listen to the (still weak) Traveler. TL;DR: Helmet is a sensory deprivation device so he can hear the Traveler.

3 RepliesHe could tell you why he wears a mask...
-
1 ReplyHe probably made some bad decisions when he was setting up his character...

Because he is Speaker for the Traveler. Anonymity is part of that, since he represents another.
