Why is it the some guns are only good if it has that one perk?

Seriously why is it, some guns are only variable or good with that one perk? If they don't have it, it's rubbish and sprays all over the place for example low impact auto rifes without braced frame, hand cannons with out rifed barrel etc. Thanks for all the replies and likes.

  • All weapons and archetypes work very differently and it is more based on play style such as not being capable of managing recoil. But the handcannon rifled barrel is easiest. Right before year 2 bungie introduced bloom to handcannons (secretly Noone agreed to this). As a short explanation handcannons have an imaginary cone that comes out of the barrel but not all cones are the same. This is based off of the range stat which contains multiple hidden stats that drastically change the mechanics of the gun. Now this cone will expand the further out the target and the more rapid you fire. The expansion of the cone will cause shots that should hit miss or cause what is know as ghost bullets. Perks like rifled barrel, Range finder, and hidden hand can generously help with this. This is what can take a frustrating handcannon to "God roll". Now on the other hand there are perks like hidden hand improve target aqusitition, crowd control, final round, send it, spray and play, & outlaw increase your killing potential. Hope that helps!

    • Bump. You can even use a lesser weapon with "good" rolls and it can do as well as one or the better guns with poop rolls. It's all about the roll. Pretty -blam!-ing stupid if you ask me.

    • Part of it is that some archetypes had been planned for certain roles, and the game didn't develop in a way that supported them (max impact pulses, etc.), but a lot of it is simply that for some reason, Bungie can't understand how shooting in this game is best. Put the crosshair on something, pull the trigger, the shot hits where you aim. Every time., please. Use range as a mechanic to modulate the damage over distances so that a hand cannon shooting beyond pulse range does 50% or less damage, making the only reason to shoot that far poking and team shooting. If you're crossmapping someone for 22 damage a headshot with a hand cannon, you're not breaking the game. Instead, we have bloom mechanics and the idea that the range stat literally translates into accuracy. Hand cannon has less than 50 range? Better luck next time. Your AR doesn't have counterbalance? Have fun getting close enough to force someone to swallow the barrel before you're effective. Oh, nice range on that scout. Too bad there are about 2 scout-friendly maps in the game unless you want to use Mida. And that pulse you're using? Hope you got max stability, counterbalance, and a range boosting perk, or you're in trouble. Instead of providing a consistent and predicatable gaming experience, Bungie has opted out infavor of just breaking things unless the things can in turn break the limitations they place on them. It's why my Hawkmoon is alone in the vault, telling itself that it's Moonglow still makes it a pretty girl...

Bungie uses a whack-a-mole approach to weapon balancing. Whatever is used gets nerfed. Their mission is to have no good perks left, nobody using exotics, nobody using abilities, everyone have a 1.0 kd and 50% win percentage.

      • Perks in year one enhanced an already good weapon. Perks in year two and three typically make or break the weapon. Just the way it is now.

        • I don't see this problem at all. I think what makes a gun trash is the user (or base stats in rare cases)

          • Because Bungie did not like having to try to balance PVP with guns that do things they were never intended to do (AR's challenging PR's at range, HC's challenging everything at range, etc.). So they came up with a bunch of trashy perks to mix in with the incredible Y1 perks they made, then they nerfed Y1 perks, and now, you have to hope that the gun you get has mostly Y1 perks in order for it to be good. No gun is going to be good with a Exhumed + Gorilla Fighter roll. PERIOD.

Pretty much. (For PvP in general) Every Auto Rifle and Pulse rifle (especially Doctrine type and Hakke) NEED Counterbalance and stability for maximum head shot capability. Every hand cannon needs rifled barrel and Rangefinder because of all the crappy range nerfs Scouts are actually in a decent spot. Shotguns need all the range perks you could possible get. Fusion rifles need range and stability Snipers need some kind of aim assist boosting perk Side arms need range Getting High Caliber Rounds on any of those guns (if applicable) is always welcome too But it felt like ever since HoW (especially because of weapon re-rolling) everyone NEEDS to have like the same handful of perks on their weapon to even be viable in competitive fields. If your shotty didn't have either Rangefinder of Shot package with another range increasing perk, you'd lose to everyone else who did have those perks even though you got the drop on them first. Now, if your handcannon is hurting for range, you could have the best aim in the world, but your bullets will be even more RNG than the person shooting at you if they're using the exact same handcannon with maxed range perks. If this game is truly going to be competitive it should come down to pure gun skill and not just, "you have a clear advantage over everyone if your gun has specific perks." A lot of people shitted all over the Last Word and Thorn Era of Crucible, but it did have some positives. For one, if you had good aim, you could cross map with almost any gun. Those who had better aim got the kill and at least, during that era, your damn bullets actually hit what you were aiming at. Yes, that era was cancerous as all hell, but I had fun. Sorry Xbox players, but during that era, Hawkmoon was God and didn't give two shits about you Last Word and Thorn babies. If you wanted a sniper... you used the HawkAwesome Remember when 2 lucky bullets would hit at once? 1 shot kills.... :3

                  • Because in year 1, guns were great out of the box and exotics were a completely new tier of awesome. In year 2 Bungie decided instead of letting exotics be good, they had to drop down to the effectiveness of legendaries, and made legendaries shit unless they get a specific roll that they used to balance everything else around.

                  • they used to be better till they nerfed everything into the ground, I remember base stability / base range was decent enough to survive PVP now it's all about stability / range perk and even then it's worst then before, if bungie can't nerf stability / range they disable AIM Assist, they disable bullet magnetism and reduce damage etc, a nightmare if you ask me but who cares this game is running out of content

We will never know...all i want to play is pvp...but its more like pimp my destiny...yo dawg i heard you like rng(getting a skelton key), so we put some rng(rng strike example omnigul) in your rng (getting strike specific loot), so you can deal with rng while you rng(getting a good roll)... 10 grasp so far no stability perk on it...1 palindrome not even close as good as the vendor roll (looking for icarus instead of spray nd play to counter shotguns),1 longbow with bullshit scopes and perks... But yeah i get blessed with "I suckballs 69/The last bitch/scrub theory of di***" god rolls i will never use unlike they remove primary weapons completly... Edit: 6 of 9 IB Shotguns from bountys and rank 5, no clever dragon or IB scout. For the pain in the ass without shotgunmode. Im suprised xur doesnt sell me some of these shotguns instead of exos. It seems bungie gathered some data from my account and thinks shotguns have to be used more often...

                    • Because Bungie has nerfed everything. It's weapons socialism......in their attempts at balance they have made every weapon equally sucky.

                      • All my favorite hand cannons have explosive. Much more effective. The "explosive" part doesn't have damage drop off, can hit multiple guardians and does more overall damage to things that don't crit.
