Exotic Weapon Review: Outbreak Prime -EXTERMINATE!-

Every raid and expansion in Destiny has that flagship weapon. Vault Of Glass had the iconic Fatebringer and the Vex Mythocrap *cough* I mean Mythoclast. Crota's End created the legendary Black Hammer. House of Wolves.... King's Fall created the Touch of Malice, one of the more extensive and lore-immersive weapons in the game. And now, with Rise of Iron, we have a weapon with, quite possibly the most extensive and creative bounty to date: The Outbreak Prime This weapon, far and wide, became the most challenging aspect of Destiny -even beating out bounties such as The Chaperone, The First Curse, and Year-One Thorn. Hell, just unlocking the bounty itself was a challenge that the entire Destiny/Reddit Community banged their heads against (to include an ARG, and locating all of the monitors). The bounty itself mandated a "Perfect" fireteam, and a decent knowledge of mathematics (until good ol' Reddit put together a handy dandy calculator, for it). Was all of this work worth it, in the end? In my opinion, yes. Aside from the challenge of actually getting the gun, the Outbreak Prime is a fantastic weapon. Aesthetically, this weapon really does look unique. It's got that Golden-Age/Rasputin feeling to it, like the Sleeper Simulant. On top of that, it's covered with SIVA. The gun's aesthetics even have a layer of functionality, too. The swarm of SIVA nanites coating the gun dissipate, when you proc Prime's Virulence perk. The lights on the side of the sight will flick off and on, whenever the Virulence perk is charged or on-cooldown, as well. Whoever designed this gun, I tip my hat to you, sir. Aesthetics aside, the weapon itself holds its own pretty damned well. It's a medium-impact pulse rifle -which already sells it, for me. It's stats sort of pull a Red Death, with the Stability feeling much higher than the stat board displays. The weapon also has a hidden perk, known as the Sign of Four. After three consecutive bursts land, the fourth burst does considerably more damage. Atop of that, it brings Outlaw to the table, to further reward those precision kills. These perks, alone, already turn the weapon into a force to be reckoned with. The Prime's true colors shine when you activate it's two exotic perks: The Corruption Spreads, and Virulence. This weapon intrinsically deals 10% bonus damage to Fallen. The Corruption Spreads procs a SIVA nanite swarm upon landing four consecutive bursts on an enemy (while also proccing Sign of Four). These nanites deal roughly 500 damage per hit to Fallen enemies. The Virulence perk functions like the Corruption Spreads, but with a few minor tweaks: This perk only triggers on a precision kill, releases a more-powerful nanite swarm (twice the power of Corruption, in fact) and then goes on cooldown for ten seconds (hence the cloud of nanites covering the weapon, and the little blinking lights on the sight, that I mentioned earlier). Unfortunately, these nanites are great only against Fallen. Against other enemies, they only do about 20% damage. Still, extra damage is extra damage. Be it a hundred damage per hit or five-hundred, you're still getting a little boost to your dps. Still, this weapon is a Fallen chop shop. Even High Servitors can't take more than 8 bursts (even if most of your shots are non-precision). It's also funny to watch an enemy literally SLIDE away from the nanite swarms, when you proc them (sometimes annoying). Overall, Outbreak Prime is a crazy new exotic weapon. It has a lot going for it, and certainly fits the definition of "exotic." I mean, hell, it's like a Pulse Rifle f*cked a swarm grenade. Truth be told, there really isn't anything bad with the weapon. The lengthy cooldown timer on Virulence was probably put in place to prevent the pros from covering an entire Crucible map with the higher-damage nanites. Still, even in Crucible, the nanites aren't exactly going to break the game. Honestly, if you get killed by the nanites, rather than the gunfire, you might have seriously screwed up, somewhere along the road. My only gripe about the weapon is that, for something that was made using intelligent self-replicating nanobots, the damned thing can't talk, or scratch my ass for me. Hope you guys enjoyed this review. If you'd like to see a review on another Exotic weapon or armor piece, leave a request in the comments, below. I'll try to review every exotic I can get my hands on. *glares menacingly at the First Curse* Edit: for those of you overly-critical buzzkills, I fixed the only certain pair of words that you sensitive pansies even bothered to notice. Maybe next time, try to have a little fun, once in your life, rather than trying to spoil something that's just supposed to be funny, informative, and just generally fun to do. Go buzzkill a different post.

  • Just got the quest a few days ago and got everything done up until killing all the raid bosses again. Really excited to test it out.

  • Banged their heads for weeks trying to figure out how to get it? Didn't it get figured out the week after the raid dropped?

    • Harder than the chaperone quest? You're out of your ducking mind. Hell the touch was much harder. Sure there's all that math crap but once the first team got it done it was easy. I do like the gun though but like the touch it's useless outside the raid. Needlessly useless. Sucks it only works well on the Fallen.

      • Didn't the Matador and Longbow get introduced in Wolves? And Shadow of Aim Assist was pretty well recognized.

Nah, it's really not that good. Look at the stats. It's just a shitty Hawksaw with a shitty rehash of firefly. Grab a Smite of Merain, it won't eat up your Exotic slot.
