This fireteam issue is a side effect of something they wanted. And they have a limited effort to compensate this. At the moment Bungie is on the way to lower the efforts in this case; maybe they let it die. In some way I could understand it: If someone would like to use an old 56k us-robotics modem today, she/he would not be able to establish a internet connection. In the same way Bungie uses some modern network functions which make some routers obsolete. Stupid for us but that's the way of modern things. I think - from this point of view - it comes down to a legal question: How are the consumer laws in USAmerica?

  • What about the notification required for this? And not just consumer laws in America but internationally. The ACCC is our regulatory body here in Australia, I will have to see how Bungie have safeguarded themselves from complaints at this level.

  • I'm not using a dated router/modem. My hardware is pretty new. I'm at work at the moment and don't have it in front of me, but before it was acknowledged that it was something they were looking into and we were just told to fix our settings, I upgraded my Internet provider's speed tier which granted me a new modem (with built in router). The internal settings offered much more control than my previous modem/router, but I found that the default settings worked far more reliably than any of the suggested in the network recommendation link proved by Bungie. Those setting made any connectivity impossible.

I focused my words on modems/routers. You are right; it is a combination of modem/router and isp. And yes, it's very annoying that a combination which works pretty well over 2 years is obsolete overnight after a update.
