I'd like to see a more immersive patrol

I understand that the likelihood of patrol seeing a complete overhaul is slim to none, so this is directed more towards future installments. As it stands, there is no real reason to do patrol other than finishing quests/bounties. Need planetary material? Buy it for marks. Need reputation? Heroic strike playlist. Want to find rare and useful loot? Heroic strike playlist. I'd like to see patrol become it's own living game mode, in the sense that public events coincide with one another. For example: there could be a vanguard encampment on Earth with friendly AI in it. The encampment would routinely be attacked by fallen, who could either be repelled or could take it. If the zone is lost, the fallen control it, and the next event is to rally and take it back. If the zone is defended, the next event is to counter-attack, pushing into fallen territory and making a foward camp to a fallen stronghold. If that fails you fall back to the encampment and repeat from the beginning, but if it succeeds you prepare to assault the fortress. Now this could be like a multistage assault, with different groups having different jobs. For example, one group takes down a shield generator while another takes out anti-aircraft guns, and a third punches right up the gut (the groups being led by AI, so people know what to do). Once inside, all groups converge to fight a boss in a darkness zone, (to promote teamwork) and defeating said boss could result in either loot specific to that event, or just high end legendary/exotic stuff. Regardless of victory or defeat, the event starts over from the beginning, so everyone has an opportunity to beat it. This could be implemented to any planet, just switch the enemies up and tweak the events a bit. For example the moon would be just constant defense while another group defeats the wizard orchestrating the attack deep within the moon. Couple this in tandem with what you can already do in patrol, and I think that'd make people more inclined to play pve, since the only rewarding aspect is one raid. Although this is highly unlikely, since bungie already has a vision for their upcoming games, I just thought it be cool to share how I thought patrol could actually feel like you're doing something worth while, instead of killing the same 4 enemies that spawn from a cave. I'd also like to hear other ideas on how to improve pve play, within reason. We know a pve game mode with exploration akin to Skyrim is out if the realm of possibilities. Tldr: dynamic events in patrol that play off each other that offers rewarding loot. Defend/Advance/Assault.

  • Dude, honestly the game should just be one big patrol mode with seamless transitions into a mission or strike or raid. One big open world. They also need outposts on each planet with vendors that sell planet specific gear. Mars would have cabal themed weaponry, Venus would have vex themed weaponry. The moon would have give themed weaponry. Reef obviously has fallen and awoken weaponry. And each outpost should have daily QUESTS (not bounties). I'm talking like witcher 3/skyrim styled murder mystery quests. And I'm cool with public events, but there need to be like world events that have the chance to drop something awesome. Idk what it could be, possibly like pieces to a legit exotic weapon that is specific to the planet. But each planet needs random world events like a complete invasion with an unbelievably hard boss that you can attempt to kill, or simply surpass. And instead of loading into missions, you just go to the mission and can choose to run the mission or abort and continue with patrol. Kind of like how the division does it. Seamlessly.

    • I've always thought it would be cool for missions to be instigated during patrols. Imagine if you only had the directory for patrols. Then when on a patrol, you could find yourself wondering the world, exploring and all that stuff that you just happened to come across the ishtar commons. While there, you and your fireteam are looking around doing random stuff, searching for loot and you chance upon the entrance to the archive. Intrigued by the huge vault like door, you take out your ghost and find that you can scan the control panel. Upon opening the doorway, the mission name appears on your screen. Another example would be if you were on the moon and noticed the huge cracks in the earth. Ghost might mention how you wouldn't know what might lie below them. So the player thinks to scan them. After scanning one, he might mention the fact that there appears to be some kind of temple beneath the surface. So you go scouting for another and eventually you find an exact location. Problem is, you now know where the temple of crota is but you can't get in because it's locked. So you might need to go looking for a key, and hive typically use tomb husks to lock doors. It would be cool if one of them was on a completely different section of the moon and you had to bring it back to open the door, instead of having Ghost hack everything.

      • Yes. This. Some kind of persistent 'zone control' mechanic pervades patrol areas. Enemy forces take a zone and instanced players have to work together to take it back. Capturing zones issues a teamwork based reward factoring in the amount of guardians engaged and linked in the activity. This should encourage disparate players to actively seek out and help each other against the darkness. Some Lore and storytelling based on the historical value of a Zone could add depth for the Lore hounds and collectors among us. (This rock is where Zavala beat a Hive horror to death with his favourite toothpick or something...) You know, a small version of this idea is contained in the court of oryx mechanic where guardians sometimes stop by to aid each other. Why not grow that idea and push it out over multiple zones across the Destiny universe.

        • They need to make the "Open" world actually open and turn it into something like Rift 2's open world. All kinds of public events going on non-stop, and when enough people were in zone you could get these huge giant monsters roaming the land destroying everything. Of course that is hard to do when you can barely get 8 people into an instance...patrol just seems way too empty.

            • I would love to see something like eliminate the target, but instead of a minion of the darkness its another guardian some where in the world that has to be hunted down. If that guardian strikes down say 4 players, he wins. If he gets struck down the killing guardian gets the reward. Or even some random event that starts with no warning at all, like invasion. There's all kinds of things they could have done if they would have just put a little effort into it.

              • You are right, the planets need an overhaul. The only new thing Bungie has added to the planets are the public events and it's been how long since anything has changed?

The funnest parts of patrol for me are definitely when public events crop up, so I think having more emphasis on multi-component, fireteam-necessary activities like you mentioned would be fantastic. Destiny is just a few feet from becoming a proper FPS/RPG with rich interactivity in addition the complex narrative and PvP, so boosting the non-competitive multiplayer parts of the gameplay would be perfect. I think I'm in that rare camp that finds PvP super boring, so having more kickass exploration rewards associated with a PvE experience is always high on my list. I'd also really like vanity items like bikes and ships to actually be useful. I'd like to get access to ships that I could use to give me a tactical hand when I'm in tight surface situations. Also maybe if there was more risk associated with owning a ship, that would be cool. Not to say I want some kind of seamless surface-to-air Star Wars Battlefront-esqugameplay introduced, but maybe that *is* what I want. DOGFIGHTING.

                                  • Actual have the devs do real work for a change? Create Dynamic content to keep players engaged other than broken PvP? Maybe go to other areas on planets? More Planets? Solar Systems? Damn thats a great suggestion. Now for it happening.........well, there's hope. Maybe, but the entire Bungie Dev team that is now assigned to twiddle their thumbs on Destiny 2/Comet/ The BS that could 2: The Overhype-ning

                                      • Agree. Bungie needs to make good on their original promise to make the patrol area massive. Like a "real" MMO. Of which Destiny is not.

                                          • I like it. My idea for improving patrols would be return blades of crota (but rename them to something less specific, e.g. just Blades) and wolf packs (but packs of each house so as to follow the story) and have patrolling ultras akin to the hated a more frequent and rewarding experience.

                                              • Weather should definitely be a mechanic. Acid rain, thunderstorms, fog, etc. I'd like to see public events more...public. Not shitty ones like "eliminate the target." Patrol needs some sort revamp to truly make the world of Destiny come ALIVE.
