I used to share your opinion, but after playing around with a few max range fusion rifles I've come to believe stability is somewhat overrated. I recently acquired a Vortex with rifled barrel and range finder (Range: 58 - Currently equipped on my warlock if you're curious). After mastering the recoil I consistently get one hit kills just inside of pulse rifle range. It honestly feels unfair facing off against shotgunners.

I have a Vortex with the same perks. I haven't quite mastered it in PvP, but it is one of my favorite specials for PvE.

It's a monster. Equip a long range primary, no land beyond is my go to, and the vortex will melt anything inside pulse rifle range. On frontier I regularly kill people in the little gap in the wall on the bridge from where the heavy near point B spawns. You've just got to tame the recoil.
