Why bloom isn't good in an fps shooter

Ok to start off, bloom is a mechanic that was introduced with patch 1.1(taken king). If u r wondering, weapons in year 1 didn't have bloom and that is why everything felt like it registered better. Along with that, every weapon was effective at any range in year 1. Bungie didn't like that weapons were being used out of their intended range. So instead of jus adding steeper damage falloff (better fix), they implemented a mechanic that brings rng into the game. Gunfights use to be about who had the better shot but with the current system, it will sometimes come down to who has better luck. No one asked for bloom going into the taken king, all that was needed to be changed was thorn and last word being nerfed slightly. Ttk on primaries across the board besides those exotics were fine. Bungie overnerfed hand cannons on behalf of those 2 exotics and instead of tuning those weapons, they implemented a mechanic that is hated in competitive pvp. Anyways, hand cannons right now r in a good spot damage wise as well as how steep damage falloff is. If bloom was removed from the game, everything would be consistent and the skill gap would be widened again. With the game going competitive, the right thing to do would be to remove bloom. Bungie please, don't treat the community like u did with halo reach. They didn't want bloom, neither do we.

  • Bloom sucks. Hand cannons are no threat to me unless I'm using one. My righteous VII or the improved Fabian strategy put users in their place. I don't see many people use hand cannons and I'm almost 100% positive that more than half of the users are struggling with unnecessary sweat. Switch to another weapon and magically the sweat is gone. By the way I do use the last word. It does wreck but it's not consistent within its range because other weapons just seem to put it in its place more often than not. I don't expect any hand cannon to be what it was in year 1 but there definitely has to be a change somewhere. Most hand cannons required paced and well timed shots in year 1 except tlw of course. The thing was you could fire the weapon faster and that's what we need back. It wasn't a broken mechanic with the high impact hand cannons. The ridiculous range was the issue. The exotics needed work too. I'll be willing to accept the hand cannon ranges now if we could fire them faster without losing the accuracy within the weapons optimal range. This game doesn't need to be realistic. It just needs to be balanced. If it was striving for realism then wouldn't hand cannon ranges be longer on other planets since there's less gravity?

  • I love bloom though. Really makes the game balanced and worth playing. I'm glad they replied and said it wasn't a problem. Good work bungie!

    • Lol I remember Halo Reach days. The DMR getting bloom and everyone freaked out. Then they "fixed" it by reducing it by 10%... Either way, when aiming, bloom shouldn't be triggered. Hip-firing.. ehh maybe. Just turn it off entirely.

      • Nothing wrong with bloom. It is a part of every single quality FPS. ADS view in destiny has no visual indication of potential bullet spread. Adding that would be a great improvement.

        • There is no 'RNG effect' when it comes to firing hand cannons, when they are used in their intended range. The vast majority of those that claim to suffer from ghost bullets have very low levels of PvP precision in the first place. This is a funny old community too, on the one hand they cry for accuracy penalties for snipers, but cry about accuracy penalties for hand cannons. You cannot have your cake and eat it. Personally, I am happy with both the sniper flinch mechanic, and the hand cannon Bloom effect. The bloom effect can be all but negated and circumvented, if you learn how to snapshoot. Snapshooting utilises the aim assist function, and is an alternative method of aiming hand cannons. If you hardscope hand cannons, you will always be at an advantage, instead learn to flick-shoot, the snapshot way, and your accuracy will increase considerably, and phantom bullets will all but disappear.

          • Bloom is nothing more than a way to give players that can't hit all there shots a chance. Stop bloom.

          • In their PvE game, Bungie has continually adjusted entire classes of weaponry because of one or two outliers that were overpowered in their PvP mode. I don't understand why they wouldn't just tweak those outliers instead of changing a whole section of the sandbox and negatively impacting the experience of many players who had already formed attachments to items that were perfectly in line with the overall balance. As a player, this has been a weird experience. I really haven't understood many of the sandbox team's decisions and have disagreed with most of them. The game is unquestionably in a better place than it was two years ago, but it seems like there's been a ton of unnecessary collateral damage and the result feels more like a Frankenstein's monster than a cohesive sandbox. The effective range thing has been a sticking point. I don't understand why the sandbox team has chosen to be so rigid in how weapon classes fall into effective ranges. Why can't a player using deliberate fire and skill be successful at long range with a hand cannon? Why can't a player burst firing an AR be successful at long range? Why effectively punish players for liking certain classes of weaponry? Why build in these static, undynamic stop-gaps that govern our loadout choices instead of enabling us to choose the weaponry that suits our style to achieve success? I keep going back to the idea that it often feels like Destiny makes choices for us instead of enabling us to make choices. That seems contrary to the stated goal of the game, and the sandbox design is absolutely where this perception shows.

              • Bungie is looking at a 3-dimensional game space in a very 2-dimensional way. Keep the damage falloff, but get rid of bloom.

                • They need to get rid of it. F* apologists and spin doctors talking shit otherwise. Range is there for damage drop off and effective hit. No more of this "Cone of RNG" bullshit.

In concept, bloom seems like a good solution for punishing players using a weapon outside of its intended range; however, when put into practice, this just turns into a game of who has better luck. If they want something other than damage falloff to control hand cannon range, they should have given them a steeper recoil, which might also makes using a stability roll more enticing.

                  • Yes sir. And hand cannons are supposed to be a beast of a weapon at close to medium close range fights. They are cannons, not side arms or revolvers.

                    • Iv tested a lil bit and been point blank with an enemy and fired 12 bullets from my hand cannon. Only 9 of the 12 even gave me hit markers the first time. Reloaded and 7 of 12. Reloaded again and 11 of 12. Again I was point blank to the point I was pushing the enemy. Every single bullet should have hit.

                      • How about bloom isn't good in anything because it's a horse shit made up not real in any aspect of shooting crap. It's some bs bungie did with halo and failed now they are trying it here. Bullets go where you aim plain and simple. Accuracy is not random. If I'm point at your head and you are 10-50m away I am hitting you in the head no random anything. They are idiots for putting it in the game no questions asked

                        • Bloom will never work on a FPS because it's based on RNG. It's a gamble over accuracy. Only stupid companies like Bungie would add it to FPS TWICE.

                          • I think most fps have a "bloom" effect. It has to do with the bullet spread at impact. The further you get away from your target the worse the spread is. If all of our guns shot like a lazer beam Bungie would need to add scope sway to all the weapons to balance it out.
