Slowly trying to stop caring about KD

For the longest time, I'm guilty of equating KD with ones prowess in the Cruciblel. While it's true a major part of Destiny' PvP revolves around killing enemy players, KD does not exactly reflect a players ability to work with the team to win a match. I recently got out of a Control match on Shores of Time. Unfortunately, we spawned on Alpha side, so I knew we were put at a severe disadvantage from the start. Thus the grueling battle began as we clawed and scratched our way through enemy sniper fire as we tried desperately to flip the spawns. I died so many times that round, and did positively horrible as I kept trying to maintain pressure on the enemy team. Trailing 4k points, we finally managed to flip the spawns, and wham! We suddenly manage to lock the entire enemy team down until the end of the round, winning with just under 2k points between the two of us. What am I getting at with this? I ended that round with a horrifically BAD KD. .67 if memory serves, one of my worst games I've played KD wise in a while. However, that didn't really matter, because as soon as we flipped the spawn, I was finally able to get some solid kills, due to having been a part of the team that forced the other players off of C flag. Gun skill is important I find, and I'm not exactly a terrible player, but knowing how to push and not get too passive on a map such as Shores of Time is essential to winning at times. You can't worry about your KD in such a scenario I think, you just need to keep on pushing, and never give the enemy players a chance to recover whenever you can. Play smart of course, and try not to get killed whenever possible, but if you remain timid and refuse to leave your spawn, then you're not only hurting yourself, but also your teams chances of winning.

  • Very true. When playing with a team one player can end up with a low kd and still be the most important member of the team. Putting pressure on the enemy or forcing them to divide their forces when they don't want to can have a major effect on the game.

  • I've never cared about KD what's the point? I play for fun and often play drunk. I don't judge people on KD and people who do I don't want to play with anyways.

  • I've never really cared about my kd ever. Usually its the same for every single game I play so I don't worry to much. I'm usually around a 1.2 to maybe even 1.5 in some games. I some how have the combat knife as the weapon I have the most kill with in bf3. And like 1.4 kd avg

  • I associate each gun fight as a competition and I love winning so higher kd means higher win percentage! I try to play objective properly and I'd rather go .5 but allow teammates lanes to push with me to take for example C as was your example and win than go 2.0 and lose. Don't get me wrong I love going 2.0 and it feels better to lose with a 2.0 than the .5 but losing its losing!

  • In kickboxing I don't like getting hit, I love hitting people. The same rule applies here. I don't like dying, I love killing. It's not that I care about my KD but when it's negative or poor. It means I died far too many times for my liking.

  • Honestly, my KD actually started rising when I stopped caring about it. Went from .8 overall to .9 and didn't even realize it. Perhaps we play better when we don't focus on a single aspect of the game. Some people are slayers and some people play the objective. But as long as you don't stay locked into one goal you don't get angry for not accomplishing it. I used to play nothing but the objective, but I had to kill guardians to do that and without realizing it, I got better at fighting my way through.

  • I too am finally able to get over this addiction as well. Started a long time ago with CoD but it made games less about having having fun... which is the whole point of a video game lol. I quit destiny when Division came out and just this week picked destiny back up. I guess since it has been so long i just dont really care anymore, and i am having so much fun just talking to friends and messing around.

  • You know, I was a sore loser for a while about my kd. I'd get so bent out of shape. I thought I had something to prove. It was only something to prove to myself. I stopped having fun because I was more worried about doing extremely well. That defeats the purpose of the game for me. I love ENJOYING my time. I needed to change if I were to keep playing competitive multi-player. I will admit, it was hard. It was like a drug addiction almost. I still grumble at some of the ways I die. Sometimes I still grumble about my performance in a match (especially trials) Things are different now. I'm laughing and having a blast. I'm not worried about my kd so much anymore. I kicked the habbit. Now I'm just enjoying myself and doing exactly what you described above in your post. I'm pushing and going for key positions, no matter what. And when / if we lose the game, it's not so bad. I send out GGs every now and then for a game well played by the enemy team. I know I'm a solid player. Who cares if I'm not always the top scorer. Who cares if I go negative from time to time. It's a game. I had to relearn how to have fun playing my favorite game =) It was hard but now I'm doing more fun and less anger and silly behavior due to not winning every single time. Plus, sometimes you just can't do shit against a red bar warrior. That's a fact. Keep going guardian. Chin up. And enjoy yourself. One thing to keep in mind is that no matter what happens you will always be honing your skills and learning new tricks and tactics. Just keep going and make sure the #1 thing you are doing is laughing and having a great time =)

Yea but you're not always starting on A spawn on SoT so it should even out. I mean, the times you start on C and are able to maintain it you're probably going to be close to 2.0 or more. Hence, it's not a totally irrelevant stat. THAT SAID, k/d in this game has a way lower vaule than in for instance the Halo games, for the following reasons: * JiP's * Team vs pug games * Gimmicks * Metas * On top of those things it's always lopsided matchmaking *Lag advantages The one thing everyone should agree on in relation to k/d is that someone who always plays with a team should have a significally better k/d than a solo player of the same skill.

    • Exactly lol. The idea of kd always being an indication of skill is pretty silly, as I, according to bungies stats, have an all time 1.2ish kd. But, I'm routinely told i play like a 1.6 to 1.7kd guy, and i can easily finish games with a 2.0 kd. My point is, the kd that we see as our all-time is, at least for the year1 guardians, almost 3 years of crucible if its your starting character. So don't focus on it! Play tactically and you'll be trouncing guys with kds loads above yours :)
you can also check the recent kd of individuals to see how they average across the last couple of days, it is routinely the stat i call out now when people ask in trials because it shows how a person plays, if they have a higher recent kd than their all time, they may be playing better than usual, and vice versa :)
• K/D is really the most important stat we have in determining a players skill. Chances are if they have a 1.5+ they are solid if they are below 1 then they arent very good Obviously in objective modes it doesnt matter though I had a control game where I capped like 15 zones and still lost. Bunch of K/D campers on my team

      • what i notice about different matches. one match i easily get a 3.5 kd and another match that was hard fought that i had to try really hard to even squeak with a .92 kd. my better game was the .92 kd because i was playing better and more difficult opponents versus the 3.5 kd that looks good but i was playing easy opponents. kd means something but its relative to who your opponents are. lets say your good enough to play the best players and come out with a .67 kd versus playing crap opponents and come out with a 6.5 kd. in some ways if the opponents are really really good then the .67 kd might be more impressive.

        • good for you. Too often I see in objective based games where players would rather take a loss and have a decent k/d than die trying to get the obj. Im a much older gamer that comes from the old school and only cares about winning.

        • Good. You do that while I worry about my K/d and snipe those snipers that are killing you. You can't win a game by just "Pushing on". You need kills. You need a Kobe Bryant.
