This video details what we'll be able to do in SC: Alpha 3.0, right now the test server has access to version 2.6.
In 4 updates players who backed Star Citizen will be getting the bulk of the features they were promised.
At their current rate of development I can see SC getting its full release by Holiday 2017, with a public beta occurring with in the next 6 months.
Oh and right now it's free to try the game until Monday.
Just follow this link-> https://robertsspaceindustries.com/promotions/Gamescom-Free-Fly-2016
And have fun!
Edit: The promo code is GAMESCOM2016
Edit 2: if you like what you see here you can buy into the Alpha for only $45. That allows you access to the MMO when it launches and a ship to fly around in during the Alpha.
Edit 3: Free Fly has ended, but there should be another one in October (I think)
Edit 4: yep free fly is coming in October, around the 9th.

To all the naysayers out there * It took 3 years (2012-2015) to make 18 ships. They made 21 ships in the past 12 months. That's more than double the previous 3 years... combined, That's 39 ships total. * With Squadron 42 the next 12 months should see that number climb to 70-80 ships. And a bunch of those ships are giant capital ships. This should give you an idea of the scale Squadron 42 provides (slight spoiler warning. Same stuff seen in a leak). * 2013 gave us a hangar. 2014 gave us Arena Commander. 2015 gave us the social module+2.0. Now, 2016 gives us Star Marine, an updated AC, and 3.0. 2017 will probably give us multiple star systems and Squadron 42. Each year we get more than double the content of the previous year. It looks like the next 12 months should give us more than the previous 4 years....combined.

1 ReplyI've invested in this game but in no way shape or form am I holding my breath. If they scam me out of my 45$, I don't really care, it was an investment I was willing to fund to see where it goes.

7 RepliesWell with no option to do a flight tutorial, the flight controls in combat feel really unnatural imo. Everyone playing was more likely to die crashing into an asteroid then actually hitting an enemy ship with the weapons supplied. I feel like it will be fun in the future when your able to do missions and such but its a whole lot more confusing then fun at the moment.

5 RepliesDon't the ships in that game cost irl 100+ dollars???
-
3 RepliesSo only 3 years late.
-
2 RepliesIt will be finished 2023 accept it
-
4 RepliesToo bad it costs ~$1k to play (including buying a good ship, and having a computer able to run it)
-
8 RepliesIs it on console?

2 RepliesI remain highly skeptical. While aspects of it look very promising, the game looks barren and empty. Much of it is hand crafted, but the nature of the game means that most of it will be lifeless and pointless to explore. In many ways I feel like they've stretched themselves too thin, If I were them, I would have focused on a single solar system and make it as detailed and complex as possible. At least they got Gary Oldman.

I guess there aren't that many PC gamers here

8 RepliesDefinitely a highlight of E3. It's nice to see this game finally come along. I went to the website earlier and it said "free fly" so I did all of that stuff but it says I need a coupon code to download it?
-
2 RepliesI'm interested to see how well I can run it, but I can't download it without buying a package? Must be missing something.
-
1 ReplyI forgot about that game until just now.
