I believe it was mentioned in a stream or twitter post a while back that they didn't want a high mark cap because players could just stack and buy everything when a new expansion was out, could be wrong about that but hey-ho.

i have everything stacked now all my characters have 5 legendary mark trials bounties waiting for me to turn them in and after this week they will all have 3 more from iron banner aka 8 X 25 marks per character

Microtransactions are a completely irrelevant comparison, you don't buy marks with real money, nor do you grind for emotes, gear and weapons on the other hand you do. It's very obvious that bungie wants us to grind, it essentially forces us to put more hours in to the game so they can keep the playerbase up.
