Today, just north of Moscow, Element 117 was created artificially in a laboratory. The element has yet to be named. I propose we all petition for a name: Spartanium. In honor of one of the most heroic, if fictional, people ever known.
To see the New York Times article on the creation of the element:
Unuseptium
Please note that Unuseptium was the placeholder name for an element yet to be observed or created artificially. There is still no official name.

I think Spartanium would be a great name for the new element. My second choice would be sciencium.
Posted by: Guscon
Posted by: Napoleon D926 Actually they name elements like this one by like square rooting the atomic number, or something similar. But that process doesn't keep strange names from popping up, like "Ununununium".
Is it not just a direct 'translation' of the atmoic number? For example, unununium would be the element with atomic number 111. 'un' = 1 so: 111 = un un un ium 117 = un un sept ium 118 = un un oct ium etc.
I believe it's the Latin translation of the Arabic number for the atom.

Actually they name elements like this one by like square rooting the atomic number, or something similar. But that process doesn't keep strange names from popping up, like "Ununununium". They will officially name it once they've got a good name, which will often result in a name that has nothing to do with the properties. I want some of that element. It gave the cheif luck, it should bring me some as well. [Edited on 04.08.2010 6:24 AM PDT]

This would be so awesome to have...An element name Spartanium. Everybody should email the author of that news article and tell him to contact the scientist for us and name it spartanium, That would be the most plausible thing to do.
Posted by: napster851 Has this been confirmed by other labratories or was this the first time it has been created?
First time, I believe.
Posted by: Sherlock Holmes Spartanium does sound like a great, strong and powerful name, not geeky at all. Is there a place to do a petition/vote or are we just going to stay here and do nothing about it?
It's normaly down to the people who discovered it. I'd imagine it'll either be named after the leading scientist, or if it was a team effort, after the lab they were working in. It could also be named after the geographical area (I believe there's a river nearby). The gist of it is, it's up to the guys that were working on it, after it has been verified by another lab. If we're really keen on it, we'd have to get into contact with the scientists themselves (us and 50,000 others across the world who have come up with names for it).

yeah go Spartanium ausome name but i dont think scientists will want to name it after somerandome video game
-
We're going from naming elements after successful scientists, to naming them after videogame characters with big guns? I've heard worse ways to get people interested in learning.

Has this been confirmed by other labratories or was this the first time it has been created?
Posted by: Lord Snakie Spartanium sounds... worthwhile. And, I mean, come on. We're the future group of geeks, we should get to name something geeky already.
If by geeks you mean people with multi-million salaries, I'm in. Spartanium is pretty bad ass.
Posted by: Lord Snakie Spartanium sounds... worthwhile. And, I mean, come on. We're the future group of geeks, we should get to name something geeky already.
It does sound like a good name!
This didn't even occur to me! This truly makes it a find of epic proportions.
I believe it is, is it not? In the 7th column too (if you ignore the transition metals, in which case it's in the 17th.
Correct :-)

Oh -blam!-, sorry mates.. I didn't see that this be t3h 117 element. Spartanium then it is!

I know right!

It would be epic if it was called Spartanium and it was one of the HALOgens... The unreactive gases which can't be broken down easily. Sounds about right. [Edited on 04.07.2010 11:07 AM PDT]

I think Spartanium would be a wondrous name. :D

I sense a viral ad champagin apporaching.
Posted by: Spartan 104 S2AM Oh man, we need to jump on this. Spartainium fits perfectly too. Anyone know where we can submit name ideas?
As far as I know, there is not a place to submit ideas for names. The naming eventually falls under the discretion of the Scientists who discover it, I believe. I just figured it would be a good thing to draw to attention, and it couldn't hurt to try.
Posted by: Sp4rksLT Spartans weren't fictional, and most of the people would think about the REAL spartans, not the bungie spartans.. meh, I think it would be STUPID to call it like that. First of all we gotta know it's properties, then give it the name.
Spartans, being the Greeks from the City-State of Sparta were indeed real, but none of them ever went by the moniker '117' as far as we know. Also, not all names in the periodic table come from the Elements properties, in fact, very few of them actually do, especially in the Artificial or Heavy Elements.

Spartanium 4 the wIn. How will people know what we are pushing for it to be named. You should turn this into a poll so we can get as many votes for the new element as posssible.

Oh man, we need to jump on this. Spartainium fits perfectly too. Anyone know where we can submit name ideas? It should have similar properties to halogens as its currently vacant position on the periodic table suggests. [Edited on 04.07.2010 9:42 AM PDT]
