Before the April 6 update, playing Halo 3 normally off the disc would yield the best performance.
Not anymore.
According to this, installing Halo 3 to a USB flash drive yields faster loading times compared to running it off the disc and of course running it off the hard drive. (Faster than the disc by an average of 2 seconds) - this depends on the speed of your flash drive.
Now we can play Halo 3 with faster loading times AND have a quiet 360 that's not working nearly as hard.
However, this does NOT apply to using an external USB hard disk drive. Microsoft has stated that these are much slower than USB flash drives.
Oh, and if you do decide to use a USB flash drive, be sure to clear the cache on your hard disk drive beforehand as this may affect load times (slower). Also be sure to get a reliable flash drive with good read/write speeds & at least 8GB in storage space.

Does this effect your abillity to pull host?

Forgive my ignorance but does the disc still need to be in the drive? I guess the systems update knows that the USB is in place and uses that data rather than the disc. I would rather have the flash drive as the disc will last longer and the heat + noise benefits would be awesome.

I personally haven't tested a USB drive yet, but others have. Here's a quote of the thread I posted.
Disc: Construct - 21.2 seconds Rat's Nest - 25.1 seconds Ghost Town - 26.4 seconds Sandbox - 22.3 seconds Heretic - 20.1 seconds Hard drive: Construct - 23.0 seconds Rat's Nest - 28.1 seconds Ghost Town - 28.1 seconds Sandbox - 23.2 seconds Heretic - 21.1 seconds USB flash drive (Kingston DataTraveler 16GB): Construct - 19.0 seconds Rat's Nest - 24.0 seconds Ghost Town - 24.2 seconds Sandbox - 20.2 seconds Heretic - 18.1 seconds
As you can see, the person who tested this used a 16GB Kingston DataTraveler. There are definitely much faster flash drives out there.

I had a thread asking the same question. Have you tried installing it the the usb? What were your results? Also what usb stick are you using.

It's probably faster for campaign as well. Not sure as to how it would compare to ODST though.
-
Any word on if this affects campaign play in a similar fashion? (I wondering about Halo 3, also ODST/Firefight.) [Edited on 04.07.2010 5:53 AM PDT]
Posted by: That Sufi (Faster than the disc by an average of 2 seconds)
WOW JUST IMAGINE THE SPEEDS!
Biggest advantage of course is having a quiet 360 with less heat & less chance of RRoD but still being faster than the disc. Also note that not all USB flash drives are the same. You could probably get faster ones (perhaps even slower ones). So please, next time post something useful. [Edited on 04.07.2010 12:58 AM PDT]
