The exclusive perks of Hawkmoon, Suros, Red Death, and other Y1 exotic primaries made them useful even without an element. You are wrong. Grim Citizen, TDYK, Gheleon's Demise, and more were Y1 legendary primaries that I enjoyed using. This whole "weapon variety" thing is a PR excuse from Bungie that some fans have mistaken for a legitimate concern.

Okay, lets try this again... These are my thoughts, all of which I can rationalize with evidence or historic proof to support the assertion. Which of these do you disagree with: #1: year one had more variety in usable primaries for PvE and PvP than the current game does #2: year two primary perks are diluted swill by comparison to year one perks #3: bungie's persistent rebalancing is actually strategic nerfing of favorite weapons, gear perks, subclass abilities, and strategies to extend the grind of the game and inflate playtimes (even at the expense of player enjoyment) #4: bungie lied about their reason for eliminating elemental primaries from the raid and trials. They've been proven liars of convenience more than once before.

Number one can easily be determined between you and I. I will list the useful year one primaries and you will list the year two primaries that were useful. We can then compare the lists. Bungo lying... You need proof? You must be new: 1. They said Xur's inventory was random. They were proven liars by megamanexe on reddit, who successfully predicted the future Xur inventory for 6 weeks in a row. 2. They claimed they couldnt change Xurs inventory on the fly. But then, at the end of the house of wolves era, they changed it to allow everyone who never had a gjallarhorn to buy one. Need I say more?
