In the bible the 4 horsemen appear from the book or scroll god holds in his right hand after the lamb of god(a name the bible and catholic church uses to describe jesus) starts to break the seals on the book (the book having 7 seals). The first 4 of these seals release the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse conquest(1), war(2), famine(3), and death(4) in that order. They are only described as beings, allegiance is never mentioned although the fact the are believed by many to be harbingers of a divine apocalypse leads many to assume theirs is to heaven.
