Why (I think) the subclasses manifest for the different classes as they do - warning long
I had a 4 hour car ride and this is the mental tangent I went on, I thought I'd share it because I thought it was cool. If I revised it I could probably explain it better but I think It's still comprehensive enough as is. I know it's super long but it's supposed to be read for fun or something so.... Anyway sorry I couldn't condense it but I got into it when writing my thoughts down. The gist is me trying to explain (why I think) the Subclasses look and act the way they do based on the guardians who use them.
"The light shines brightest in those it consumes." - Helm of Inmost Light I find the way Guardians use their light to be very interesting. More specifically how the three classes differ in summoning their light in their subclasses. It seems there's a pattern if you look for it, the changing light reflecting the nature of its wielder. Warlocks yearn to study and understand things as they are, especially the light. It would make sense for them to use the Voidwalker, Sunsinger, and Stormcaller, subclasses that utilize distilled versions of Void, Solar, and Arc Light respectively. They've achieved an almost oneness with these energy forms and their unique abilities are dictated by the defining traits of each element of Light. They respect the Light and let it flow through them in its purest form. What is the shape of Nova Bomb? The shape of Storm trance? The shape of Radiance? There is none. It is simply the shape of void, of arc, and of solar. Do they embrace this purity of light to transcend into a higher plain of existence, to maybe in a manner of speaking become Light? Or is it a natural scientific and even artistic impulse to preserve? If we take this idea of purity to its extreme and apply it to Hunters you'll find what they do to be borderline abuse. The Light is a fundamental force, it does not know what a gun is, or a knife or a bow. No, these are human concepts from a base human society. It's self centered and even closed minded to force your Light into such a form, to rip it so far from it's natural shape! At least, that's what a Warlock too in love with their own way of thinking might say. The Hunters do not live like the Warlocks do. They do not have libraries or host experiments, they do not have the luxury of understanding the true nature of Light. Not their version of it. They tread the Wilds, and out there practicality and efficiency rules. Being able to wield your Light into such a specific comfortable shape is more than practical. It just shows their level of mastery and control. Hunters know shooting, they know knives, and they know trapping. When such a powerful force fits your hand like a glove? Now that's efficiency. Not much more to say. The Warlocks embrace the nature of the Light. The Hunters bend the Light to their nature. So where do the Titans fall? Not as consistent as the other two it'll be hard to answer, but I believe I have an explanation. The Titans are somewhere between the two yet unique in their own right. They're not one with the Light like Warlocks but don't dominate their Light like Hunters. The Light naturally follows the Titan's intent, more of an abstract idea. What is needed right now? What is the goal? The Light abides by what is necessary for the mission, the objective. Must we Charge? do we break them? The light abides and deems you Striker. Must we Hold? Do we become unbreakable? The Light abides and deems you Defender One who Strikes and one who Defends, with the Titan it's about the action rather than the method. Whether the Titan needs to be an unstoppable force or an immovable object the Light will come forth, yet still not manifesting as a specific shape but rather serving a concept. But we have an outlier in the Titan subclasses, the Sunbreaker. Immediately we look back to Hunters as they're the only other ones to summon light in such a specific weapon form. Another connection to Hunters is the environment of the Sunbreaker, they both roam the wilds. But I believe this to be a clue more than an answer. I don't believe the Sunbreakers think like a Hunter, though their light may look similar on the outside they are fundamentally different. "To charge" "To hold" Both these concepts must be relative to an enemy to exist. The Sunbreaker however was born early in our history, before the city, before there was a single front from which to charge and hold. I believe it's still serving a concept. A need. Just a more general fundamental need that exists in the core of all Titans, far before there were walls to dedicate themselves to. Something they all yearn for, perhaps it's what motivates their steadfast protection of the city today. Must we smite? Do we bring honor to an honorless land? The light abides and deems you Sunbreaker. Yes Titans want to bring justice, to protect. But Titans aren't as pure of heart as they may seem. ALL TITANS seek glory. Often times it's not justice, truth, camaraderie, or even the mission that drives their actions. It's not because they think it's the right decision. It's because Titans seek greatness. This hubris, this stubborn pride, this idea of being a legendary hero of honor is often what drives them to reckless sometimes self-destructive behavior. Not for the sake of others but for the sake of themselves. This in small part can be found in all Guardians and is what most connects Titans to their hooded and arcane brothers and sisters. This is the reason the Hammer of Sol is shaped so specifically. That self serving ideal all Titans strive for. The Glory and immortality they all seek. The Sunbreaker represents the true nature of Titans, even those qualities less virtuous. "Of all the Lights, we burned the brightest" - Unknown Sunbreaker

  • I think all the classes have their dark sides. The warlocks strive for knowledge and power can lead them to the darkness such as with Toland the shattered and Osiris. The Titans strive for glory can lead them astray to the dark. I wanna use Dregen Yor as an example, but I can't remember whether he was a Titan or hunter. I am still coming up with the hunters.

    • I want to point out that Ouros (the Sunbreaker who talks with you) never mentions the Hammer (I think). I've always imagined a Sunbreaker with an axe or a sword after having that thought. Also, if you like long lore posts about awesome games, check this link out! It's about the Elder Scrolls games, but I think I did a good job, so far. This link is a part two, just so you know. • I'd say the hammer is more of a representation of the titans need to bring justice to a lawless world. Since it would've been before the city the world must've been quite cruel. The strong prey on the weak and why not? With threats of alien invaders lurking around every corner why should anyone follow laws? What is to keep them together in times of desperation. I think a great titan harnessed this power to do just that. Sort of like a more barbaric version of a police force. Plus the hammer is usually associated as an icon signifying justice/order

          • Firstly, well done, you thought about and wrote this well. Seocndly, I agree with you on the Warlocks and Hunters. In fact, purely coincidentally, I just thought about how Warlocks used the light myself the other day. That theirs is formless, whilst a Hunter's has a form, but for a Titan it has a structure. You started off well with the Titans, but we do not seek to glorify ourselves. For a Titan, our mission is to give our all to defend the City and its people. Why do you think the Titan insignia is a hexagon split into four parts? Because it was us, the Titans, who defended the Walls. Why? Because that is what we do, we defend our people, and we defend the City that we built, and the Traveler. All the legendary Titabs have one thing in common. They gained their legend bevause they found the opportunity to give their all for the City. Allw me to elaborate. Saint-14. He almost killed himself delivering that headbutt to Solkis. But he understood that he needed to kill this enemy to defend the City, so he put in almost all his Light and broke his enemy. Lord Saladin understood led the Guardians to defend the City against three Fallen Houses. Lord Shaxx understood that if he wanted to defend the Coty he must charge and break them. Even Kabr, he understood that to defend the Light against the Vex, even jn their domain in the Vault of Glass, he gave his Light to create a shield to defend incoming Guardians. Even Rezyl Azzir, almost risked his life to experiment on the Fist of Havoc, look at how that has gone on to help Titans do their thing. What I'm trying to say, is that we do not fight for our own glory. Our glory, what makes us the most proud, is how best we can defend the City. Maybe our defense takes the shape of offense. We are protecting all the same. Whether we will charge at them and break them, or become a wall that they will fall to, or whether we will outright destroy them, we protect the City. Do you know what the Firebreak Calculus is? How much good could I do of I find the right place amd fight until I die?
Sorry for the long reply. You can probably tell I main a Titan.
This is very well thought out and I really like it, although I always thought of the hunters as the ones seeking glory, roaming the frontier for darkness to kill ( which is why I main one) however I may be wrong because I definitely didn't think this out as long as you did

The hunters shape the light, the light shapes the warlocks..but i think it the titans who combine both their intentions and the will of the light. Essentialy creating an equilibrium which grants them something unique. "Of all the Lights, we burned the brightest" - The Sunbreakers ¨,"He walked out into the demon light. But at the end he was brighter." On the Helm of Saint 14, "The light shines brightest in those it consumes." on the helm of inmost light. In all of these cases it is described as the brightest light and this is why i believe it is actually the titans who are one with the light.

              • This is a well thought out post, but I do have some disagreements about your thoughts on the Titans. I personally don't main a Titan, so I wouldn't be the best choice to try and defend them.
pun not intended
• I feel Titans are more in line of protection, and how the light can serve that purpose. Striking to throw yourself in before others, building walls and generating orbs and defense for your comrades, or building and tearing down the situation to see fit. I see sunbreakers as more of a balance between building and breaking. A hammer builds, but it also destroys. Building sunspot to share, gernades to wall off threat, healing yourself to continue the other side of the coin: suncharging and exploding your enemies, melting points, and circling back around to damage with the very same sunspot that protects. A sunbreaker is a harmony of protecting offensively and defensively. Set fire to yourself to save others and to spread to others unwanted. I feel like while all classes share some similarities such as manifesting light into tools of war for varying reasons, where Titans shine is in the intent to protect others. I can see this being construed into the idea for only self glory to become legend by peers for throwing yourself before others. But its honestly the action of throwing yourself before others FOR others. Looking at any given Titan headfigure in this game, their intent is mostly characterized by their extreme lengths went to protecting mankind. This in history just looks like a book of titans achieving glory page after page, but none really point to doing this for self fulfillment really. My two cents anyway

                    • What subclass you use, however, is down to personality. I have no direct evidence, but it makes sense, as the supers seem to represent different ways people could release that feeling of power in an offensive way. Don't understand? Remember when you were six and felt all awesome acting out hulk smashing in your room? That is what a striker does in combat.

Titans are merciless to enemies compassionate to the powerless , immovable, power. Its from an old mark.
