After deeply diving into the grimoire I have come to the conclusion that the Exo's are simply corrupted units of the vex.
The vex themselves are sentient, self aware robots that move as a single unified unit.
The Exo's are also sentient, self aware units who have no memory or recollection of what they are/who they are.
My conclusion is that they are units who wouldn't conform to the vex network. After overtaking Clovis Bray facilities the Vex began to fully understand the Exo's body type and conscious being (alterations the humans made).
Where did Clovis really begin to understand this type of technology? The Vex structures on Venus. This leads me to believe that they were planted as to gain an advantage over guardians and begin to simulate and understand light as a whole.
Now once they have an understanding of how the alterations occurred the Vex attempted to absorb the Exo's into their network, some may have been taken into their network and thusly made into minds. It's how the Vex knew to use Praydeth to save themselves, it's how the vex know we can stop the darkness, and it's how the vex knew that invading us would lead to their termination.
Now as for the Exo's that are still on our side were attempted to be absorbed by the Vex, when they broke free they lost their memories as the Vex went and absorbed their memories/knowledge and then attempted to remove that from their Exo hardware.
After resisting the absorption they lost their hardware memory, but they had their consciousness to remember which is why when they're restarted their programming can better grasp the memories. It's why when they go behind the veil they can find more memories but it endangers them due to their body not being able to handle that mental strain.
It also explains the Exo's hatred for Vex as shown by the Exo grabbing a leg of the Vex and starts beating the Vex with it. They're locked in a war and the Exo is subconsciously letting go of their hatred whilst fighting them.
Thanks for reading! Tell me what you think.

1 ReplyEdited by The Warden: 7/29/2016 8:23:40 PMThe Vex(except for most Harpies) have organic components. That white stuff you see, that's Radiolaria. That's the Vex. The outside is just a frame for transport, construction, or defense. They are not robots. The hatred for the Vex is probably shared by most other people, as they are direct worshippers of the Darkness. Exos are not corrupted Vex, because many, if not all, were once human. Just ask Cayde-6. They were created to fight a long forgotten war, or maybe that was just a side effect. Maybe someone wanted to be immortal. Either way, Exos are not Vex.
Vex cannot simulate Light or Darkness.
Edited by Haffoc: 7/28/2016 11:37:36 AMExo's come from Europa (probably - according to Cayde - he was human once) Can't say I remember an Exo grabing the leg of a Vex and then using it to beat the Vex. The Ishtar scientists used early Exo's to explore the citadel. In the Exo race card, the Exo considers him/herself human, making the following points.
If I am a machine then so are you. If you are not a machine then neither am I. Exo minds are human. It is incontrovertible.

"Why does a war machine have emotions? Why should a war machine have awareness? These are not useful traits on the battlefield. Don't flatter yourself. They are not useful. So why should the Exo mind mimic the human architecture so closely?"
and concludes with
My friend, you should meet the Vex. There is nothing human in them. Now. This is what I believe happened, back in the time before any Exo can remember. It explains everything. I think someone wanted to live forever.
Interestingly in the Alpha Lupi ARG, the entry for Jupiter had a little extra bit that suggests the Traveller created the Exo's, or possibly Vex (who knows)
"You deliver your last orders to an army that needs nothing anymore -- no instruction; courage or even prayers -- and then you hide again" "In ecstasy they search for you, finding nothing but dense quiet dropping from the stars."
You do know the vex are cyborgs right?

6 RepliesNo reference. Can be taken as a tin foil hat theory.

She didn't beat a vex with it's own leg unless that's what it says in the lore. I would love to see that!

4 RepliesOne problem. The vex are made of radiolaria. The exos, not so much.

2 RepliesFURTHER MORE: Armour from the Vault of Glass shows that the Vex can start connecting the wearer to the Vex collective mind, while this on the surface supports your theory there is no limitation placed on it, any guardian or other individual could be wired into the collective mind, so if this theory is real then why did they limit themselves to just Exos?

20 RepliesEdited by Moot: 7/27/2016 9:21:10 PMIntersting theory, but I'm not a fan of it considering all Exo were once flesh-and-blood humans (eg. Cayde-6 was once a dude and the exo stranger was most likely once Maya Sundaresh). I do believe though that Exo were indeed developed and perfected through the study of Vex tech and the help of the warminds. We know that Exo were originally built to be war machines, but most likely built to fight the Vex however, which would explain the hatred (it's also highly possible that the Exo were made as a means to try and achieve immortality, as an extra "side-purpose" of sorts).

4 RepliesALSO ALSO the most famous exo is Saint-14, therefore you could not have made this theory as the moment the word "Titan" entered your mind this would have immediately morphed into a Nerf post, therefore you are an impostor!

3 RepliesHey, the M2 machine gun and the GAU-8 Avenger both fire bullets automatically. One rotates and the other doesn't. Clearly they are the same. Oh don't don't forget the sweeper bot. Clearly a Vex infiltrator.

1 ReplyYou've done melted my circuitry

8 RepliesALSO they're completely different, Exos are completely synthetic, whereas Vex, while largely mechanical, have a organic core that all Vex units possess, therefore Exos are completely different from Vex units.
-
2 RepliesAlso your theory fails to include the Warminds, where do they fit into this little theory? We see in the Grimoire Cards Ghost Fragments: Vex 3 & 4 the Warminds are able to resist the influence of the Vex collective Mind and were deployed to protect the earliest versions of the Exos from Vex influence, so how could Exos be Vex in Origin?

10 RepliesEdited by Guardian, Archon Of Light: 7/27/2016 9:03:13 PMCayde Was Human before he was turned into an Exo I Will have to look up the cards, but Exos have personalities from real people imprinted on there CPU. That's why Exos have Genders, notice anything Vex related has no gender identifiers. Exos are golden age tech.
