I understand sometimes you got to break a few eggs to make an omelette, and shit happens, but it would be nice to get a Thursday update dedicated to peeling back the curtain and explaining to the community why Bungie appears to only be doing server maintenances during live events and why that server maintenance appears to have in game impacts. It's a bit of a reach for some of us to understand why working on the servers (which we may relate to lag and matchmaking) would have an impact on drops and faction (which we have a hard time relating to lag and matchmaking). Why are these maintenance Windows only during live events? Why is the maintenance having impacts on the game? Is there a road map to RoI? Or should we just assume Iron banner will magically break every Thursday? What are you tweaking behind the scenes that are causing these errors? Is it matchmaking? I think there would be a lot less hostility if Bungie would take the time to communicate with us. We know you're people, and we can empathize with people trying to do their jobs, but we don't see people when we see the servers are going to be suddenly offline for hours of maintenance and then something is inevitably not working when they come back online. I know this will probably never happen, but I just felt I should put it out there as a constructive criticism/suggestion. Edit: think of it this way: you're sitting at home during winter and suddenly your power is out. Several hours later it's still out, calling the power company only yields a recorded message saying they know it's out, and you're starting to get annoyed; you're assuming some icy branch broke a line and the crews are taking their sweet ass time to fix it. In the morning you find out someone hit a patch of ice and ran into the light pole; suddenly you're a whole lot less aggravated. That's all we need to know here.

  • Yes! I find the lack of an official server status page really frustrating. This in in an IB week where I was hit by 2 days of the BT broadband outage to spent far too long staring down marionberry failures and rebooting all the things. It'd be nice if there was something in the game itself. Ironically after I rage quit IB I was stood next to the postmaster who was muttering about failures and disconnects - if I could have pulled my weapon I would. Almost as bad as the Cryptarch telling me to come back and tell him how well my mote of light went.

Transparency builds trust. We are informed gamers and demand more for the investment of our time and money. Now. AND, I really think that a multi-billion dollar company could hire guys work 2nd and 3rd shift, and I'm sure they do. Stress tests during the peak hours do hurt the experience.

  • I'm guessing that the maintenance during live events probably has to do with the increased playerbase during the duration of the event. I don't know enough about data collecting and all that jazz to assume beyond that.

  • I think that is the case as well. But you know what they say about assumptions, except in this case it makes an ass out of the whole community.

  • Just gunna toss this out there (you're spot on btw, great comment) regarding why they do matchmaking updates during live events. Mainly because they have a somewhat controlled environment and a very active playlist, so that they can get the most accurate data so that they can make even more improvements. If that's the case, I see what they're going for and why they'd do it that way. But man oh man, it really sucks on the players end. I don't mind the servers being down during the day (Bungie is a company run by people, not vampires), that's when people work. But when you have an issue like this, where you aren't even getting REP? That needs to be addressed, quickly and wholeheartedly.

I agree about the server maintenance times and the reason, but the problem is that is meaningless coming from you or I. Instead we need to hear it from them. What I'd like to see is a monthly or quarterly calendar. They keep saying servers will be offline for "scheduled maintenance", but we're only made aware of the schedule the day before. It may be scheduled for them, but to us it just looks like they don't know the meaning of that word. What i'd like to see is: on July 1 the calendar said "Week of July 18th - Tentative - Iron Banner & 4 hour maintenance window". Then on July 14th they could announce in the update, "Iron Banner starts July 19th. Tentative server maintenance on July 22nd. Servers down 4hrs for pre patch preparations"
