What exactly is the trick to hand cannons?

Last Word isn't an issue, I and any noob can wreck with it; I'm talking about every hand cannon other than Last Word, what's the deal? I see players running around wrecking with Hawkmoon and First Curse, they land their shots and just bam bam dead, can't run, can't hide, they see you and you're dead. But.... I use them and what the -blam!-.... Shots going everywhere, I know you're supposed to pace your shots and blah blah blah but it just doesn't make sense, what is this secret to hand cannons that I am so obviously missing?

  • top tier archetype so eyesluna, lord highfixer, imago loop, finallis peril, or ace of spades. Make sure that one of these has rifled/reinforced barrel or possible rangefinder with hammerforged or smallbore

  • Aim at the center and try to move your way up. If they're moving, aim more to the side that they're running to. So if they're running right, aim to the right of their body, and so on.

  • I like to point the reticle at the enemies head, and then, when/if I feel like damaging them, I'll then decide to expend some ammo in the hope of damaging said enemy...it's a highly abstract concept I know...

    • Here's a dirty tip for The Curse, Double headshot low armors, or get one headshot and two body shots. As for firing, all you can do is pace your shots and practice. With The First Curse you have a horrid fire rate which you should use to line up and fire your next shot.

    • Just practice. Iv used had cannon religiously since day one. They have changed when they were gods with unlimited range. But now you HAVE to know what you gun is capable of. If your to far your bullets will disappear. Stick to ONE hc. You have to haves solid baseline. They all feel unique and will throw you off if you keep changing. Range is the number 1 stat now. But don't get your stability so low you have to really compensate every time you take a shot. Which then leads to pacing. It's annoying, (and dumb that it's the only weapon in the game you get punished for firing at it's intended firerate) but necessary. So to recap. 1 learn your range. 2 keep to one gun, dosnt feel right, try another. 3 pace your shots. 4 just practice. TL/DR : Get Gud.

    • Glad to see I'm not the only one trying to get a good feel in using HC in the Crucible. As I'm about to head into the final step of the weapon master quest with the HC kills, are there any 'desired' / 'preferred' perks to look at for? I have a good feel for HC when it comes to PvE, but when it comes to PvP - I struggle.

Pace your shots and know when to run. Practice in PVE and get to where you can do at least 2 clips in a row of headshots. And lastly try to get a HC that has either a high base range or a range boosting mid perk to start with. Ace of Spades and Hawkmoon are great ones to start with, especially spades with it's very high range and stability plus 3rd eye. And I have more hand cannon kills than some guardians have all other weapons out together. You can trust me.

      • I see a lot of good advice and don't want to repeat but I'll tell you this, learn what perks you have on the gun and use them wisely. Example will be hawkmoon. Let's say you fire 3 shots and 2 of them you hear the sound for the holding aces perk activate. Now you know you only have 1 more shot that increases damage. Go ahead and reload when it's safe so you now have 3 shots the will do increased damage again. Gloves with increased reload speed for hand cannons is also a good idea. Stack that with another reload perk on the weapon or chain of woe with a Hunter and you'll reload in the blink of an eye.

      • The thing with hand cannons is learning the rof and the recoil patterns. Most hand cannons also have high aim assist which also messes some up with target aquisition. They hit hard and have a low ttk so you can't afford to miss shots. Go out on patrol and learn the gun. In most pve situations you should be able to hit your target on every trigger pull. The majority of your hand cannons can three shot most guardians so they are a very good choice for pvp. But as others have said range is gonna be the thing you are looking for. With all the range nerfs on hand cannons they have a small range limit with the exception of guns like the axe of spades and first curse. All in all my suggestion is to get very comfortable using the gun in pve situations and the use of them in pvp will be noticed greatly. This is coming from someone who never used hand cannons in y1. I tried them out to change things up a bit and I have grown to love them. Plus, you feel like a bad ass when you out gun other weapons with with a pistol. Lol

The major issue with HCs is the follow up shots. I am typically above the target on the follow up. Plan accordingly. Note that the sight you use will in fact affect the recoil pattern of the HC in some way. You always, always, always want to use Truesight or Suresight over the other sights if available. Oh and range stats intrinsically affect the guns accuracy by the very nature of the range stat.

          • What i did to get good with HCs was take a hawkmoon into the first mission on the moon(with the army of thrall near the end) and have a goal to headshot every thrall in quick succession. After that, do the same in the Abyss in crota's end(the first part) and finish it. Solo. Learn how to twitch shot too, lets you get perfectionists if you know what that is

            • Start out with Thorn and work your way up to a slower HC with more power. Or stick with Thorn. Thorn's always ok. Bungo pls give Thorn a light level boost.

                • You can't spam shots with hand cannons anymore. If you do the first shot will hit ,but the rest will be all over the place. Try going into crucible with a hard hitting hand cannon and give a one second pause in between shots and see if it helps.

                • I use an Eyesluna over TLW in Trials now if I snipe. Perks definitely help. Rangefinder will allow you do to more damage at range. Hammer forged/Rifled Barrel as well, also helping with accuracy. The most important thing adapting to a scope that you're nost consistent with (mine is Truesight IS), and learning the recoil pattern of the weapon. Eyesluna, Imago Loop have almost a similar pattern, Hawkmoon is flipped along with Vanity and other Omolon/Hakke 's. My stats may reflect on how much you believe me or not. Its not necessarily landing the first headshot in your 1s. But making sure shots 2/3 crit.

                  • I like to use my surroundings with a hc. I hug more walls while ads. Vertical movements help too. Always make sure you're hitting your crit shot first.

                  • stick to cover as much as possible. stick to one on one engagements. Handcannons are pretty accurate from the air so use your vertical movements as well. Take a handcannon you like into rumble, use only that weapon. Just work on aiming. Or you can practice on pve stuff.
