First off, we know the awoken fleet was there and a battle took place, but even so he could've come straight to the city after the battle and used the mega weapon on the traveler as well and possibly destroyed earth.
Also, the cable attack may have been a big enough of a threat anyway so that must be stopped before he could attack the city but it was only one cabal ship.
Thoughts?
Edit:Thats a whole lot of replies.

Didnt the bond brothers almost destory the dreadnaught themselces with the bombs, but we intervened because the vangaurd thought their was too much important dtuff on the dreadnaught.

Few things I would suggest: 1 - Crota had been around for thousands of years and was finally defeated. Oryx has encountered species that have given him a tough fight but not (that we know of) one that could kill a ascendant hive. Probably was going to test Earth defences first. 2 - The Awoken seem to have have been created by the traveller and have some power over the light or darkness. The Queen together with Harbingers took out a chunk of the hive fleet and Oryx had no choice but to wipe out that threat and his own fleet too. 3 - Cabal incursion on to the dreadnought was supported by other fleet elements shadowing the ship and required diversion of resources to stop any further advancements. 4 - First encounter with guardians who were infused with light from the traveller. Previous species Oryx had encountered had help from the traveller but did not have anything similar to guardians that we know of. Rasputin and the Vex also have issues with the same thing.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that Crota destroyed all his supporting ships. Therefore, he probably halted to replenish his forces before deciding attack the city
-
Crota was killed on Earths moon not Satans rings. After the super weapon was fired and the awaken war ended. Then to my understanding earth Guardian boarded the drednaught and disabled the super weapon. And Oryx was killed by the same Guardians. That's why the attack on Earth was stoped.

1 ReplyIt was a combination of things. First- You'll notice that when Oryx activates his Oversoul to destroy the Awoken fleet, it destroys everything in the Dreadnaught's vicinity indiscriminately. This meant that the original force he intended to use on earth was drastically reduced, which left him in a very poor position to attack directly. Second- The cabal incursion also meant that he could no longer even devote the forces on his flagship to attacking the city, due to having to deal with Tau'aun's troops before they could do any critical damage. Finally- The dreadnaught is Oryx's throne world. In other words, it is the only place where he can be killed permanently. With his escort fleet destroyed mostly, any tactician within reason would think twice before attacking with the most critical part of their force lying so exposed.

The cabal drove a ship straight into Oryxs ship, and the awoken crippled his fleet. He would've been too slow to get to the city and would've lost before he got there. That and we blew up his weapon the third mission of the campaign. Don't ask me why they didn't fix it.

4 RepliesEdited by PROCK7: 7/26/2016 5:30:56 AM1) He was weakened by the Awoken inflicting what appeared to be significant losses to Oryx's support fleet. These would have been his pawns to sacrifice to see how good the guardian defense was and to see if traveler was truly dead. 2) Guardians knocking his main weapon offline (not sure why a 3000 mile ship didn't have spare parts for three connections). 3) Cabal launched an attack and damaged his ship. Leaving a cabal ship sticking out of the side which one would think reduce the dreadnaught's ability to move. Also the cabal ship could have just detonated it's core and easily destroying the dreadnaught so resources and time has to be spent defeating the cabal. Add that all up and throw in the possibility the Traveler could be playing possum and would only awaken if a significant and direct threat existed such as oryx dreadnaught. Bottom line: Oryx had to hold off his attack and repel the boarders and make repairs.

2 RepliesFor someone who has taken countless world's and been around for billions of years he wasn't very impressive, also where are all these other species he's taken?

4 RepliesEdited by Forever277: 7/17/2016 7:56:36 AMbecause someone put a bomb on his ship, and it would go off if he went slower than 50 mph so he had to keep flying around Saturn until Oryx could get Keanau Reeves to defuse it.

Edited by Oriondeadstar: 7/26/2016 5:21:32 AMWe snuck on board and destroyed the gun and shield. Then cabal were on board too trying to blow their ship up. Also, the queen's fleet were holding them back before we board oryx's ship.

Because Bungie/Activision didn't want to update the Tower hub to show battle scars just for the the Taken King expansion. It's easier and less expensive to recycle than to be creative.
-
The queen's fleet was destroying a lot of his fleet already and to keep them from destroying it doing major harm to the flag ship he had to activate his super weapon and destroyed almost all of his remaining fleet so he couldn't go to the city and destroy you until he got reinforcements and his reinforcements would have to be the regular hive because the traveler dead or not is still protecting the city from the effects of the darkness and the taken is basically entirely made up of the taken darkness energy
-
1 ReplyThe traveller its self. While many consider it dead, it is actually in a sort of coma. It still radiates light, which can be thought of as a forcefield keeping the darkness away.

7 RepliesThe cabal rammed a bunch of ships into the dreadnaught and created some chaos of their own. The Brothers had their engines hooked up to explosives when we got there.
-
Edited by FadedNarrator: 7/25/2016 11:57:46 AMWell it only took 6 guardians to bring down his son and its fair to assume Oryx knew this. So an assault on a planet full of guardians with a weakened fleet would of probably ended poorly for him.
-
1 ReplyHe was left exposed after the harbingers destroyed his smaller ships. Think about it. He still had to pass by Jupiter(the nines territory) the nine prepared us for oryx by releasing skolas to strengthen reef-city ties, and to allow skolas access to vex tech and to foresee the future and oryx's coming. That means the nine must be against oryx. He probably dosent know about the strength of the reef. For all he knew, there could be more ships and he would have to pass through the reefs territory. The. He would have to pass the cabal, who a visually have air power and ships. He might have to deal with the vex and maybe the fallen(both a maybe) Then he would arrive at a place so full of light. Being a major connection to the darkness, that probably isn't good for him but who knows.
