A Theory on The Awoken

Okay I'm going on record saying this is a stretch, but stay with me. How were the awoken created? It is said they were born in the collapse; having witnessed some mind shattering revelation as they tried to flee into deep space. I originally gave this little thought until the Taken King. In one of the first cutscenes we are treated to a view of Zavala's marvelous cranium. Found in the link below. http://femsheped.tumblr.com/post/129155493904 Note how is skin has pulsating veins all over it, as though something is crawling under his skin. Like parasites or worms. Taking a step back, in the Books of Sorrow, the progenitors of the Hive, Aurash, Xivu Arath and Savathun, sacrifice their freedom to the Worm Gods in exchange for immortality and power. However they must make themselves host to worms children for this to happen. If they are defeated in battle though, this arrangement is null and void. As far as we can tell the Awoken in Destiny are, in a sense, immortal. They do not age, though they can be killed. How do I know this? The Grimoire for the Queen of the Reef, has her active sometime after the collapse, establishing a home in the asteroid belt. Between this and the establishment of the Last City, this means she is possibly centuries old (not dissing on a lady's age, I'm stating a fact) but still maintains a youthful look. Another point is Xur. He's a Jovian, a race that is like the Awoken but somehow....more. He's got TENTACLES coming out his face. Freaking tentacles. Those are likely worms buried more thoroughly in something that was human. My theory is that during the Collapse as some humans fled the Darkness, they were...infested by the Worms of the hive, or possibly a subspecies more intrinsically linked to the Darkness. Thus spawned the Awoken and Xur. Hate it? Love it? Don't care? Leave a comment below on what you think!

  • I read tentacles as testicles. Needless to say I was a bit confused

  • The nine refers to phallic size.

  • Awoken skin glows, there's a faint glow that flows through their face and I assume the rest of their body as well. I believe the awoken were created when the traveler release a blast of light to push back the darkness at the same time that maybe rasputin used some anti mater bombs and the resulting explosion and collide between light, dark, and antimatter (maybe) formed the awoken. As to what they are I believe that they're two souls in one body. Also about the age thing do people forget that human lifespans tripled? The current average human lifespan is 80 years, now triple that and you get like 240 (I think, my math is super rusty) so humans live a long time not just awoken, the only thing I know that is immortal are guardians as long as their ghosts don't die. But that's just my theory based off of my extensive staring at the character creation screen, overwatching cutscenes, and excessive reading of the grimiore.

There's actually a lot of subtle evidence implying that the awoken were created after the Hive encountered the fleeing humans, and rather than kill them, bonded with them into a new 'hybrid' species. Furthermore, the evidence suggests that Mara Sov may actually be Savathûn (though it's very subtle; they're both queens, same mannerisms, etc.) Also, that pulsating effect can be seen on all awoken (even your own character), not just Zavala.

    • Awoken were born on the edges of Light and Dark during a massive amount of energy being released (explosion!). They are thoughtful light burning through the flesh. Xur is not related to the Awoken. He has a connection to worms. Maybe not THE worms, but listen to his quotes.

    • I like your theory and it has its merits, I dig the worm infesting the host idea but I don't personally buy it. During character creation though, I remember a couple darker skin tones in the selection, that obviously would show their at least a possible human descendant. As for traveling to the edge of the light and peering into the darkness and gave then a sort of evolution from human to awoken, is more likely the cause of the brighter skin tones. I see no pulsating light though, perhaps it was a glow from his ghost? Or maybe just maybe Cayde-6 was centimeters from Zavala, off screen mind you, just because he can... I love the theory, really do. This is just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

Or, y'know, those might be veins... But obviously that's a dumb idea. I mean, they're only one of the vital parts of human anatomy, and many other organic species' anatomy...

I don't know about the aging, Zavala seems older. Also does anyone want to know why awoken are blue? Also, that's light on their heads

The Awoken are humans in a sense actually they were changed when humans went away from earth to the edge of the Darkness ,the last place the light touches,They were changed by something they witnessed out there personally I feel like they looked into the darkness . The Queen on the other hand she is not awoken or human in the grimore she talks about how she more or less made of the light and the darkness ,they are her parents she says.

      • I don't know about the rest of your theory, but I see none of what you describe in Zavala.

      • I think it is generally considered that the awoken were born when rasputin detonated a nuclear device in what is now the reef when humans tried to escape Earth. Additionally, I've heard xur say: 'Some of the cells in this body originated on this planet. How strange.' (Or something along those lines...)

      • There's no way that they have Worms in them. The pulsating light for them is made because of the action that caused there transformation.

      • If you got to ghost grimoire. In one card there is a very interesting line that makes your theory more vaild. "Or a awoken who born in the essence that your people hide from"

      • That's what I've always thought too. And when the card Awoken 3 came out, it just further enforced that belief. They were infected with something. I even think that "birth" ceremony in the other awoken cards is a process awoken go through to control or halt the infection, allowing them to keep from turning to the darkness. I don't know if the infection is specifically the worms, but definitely similar in nature.
