how's that effect anything? if someone were to optionally matchmake, there still might be people who AFK

At least, it's better than those who will NEVER experience the raid.

What experience will they get if they can't even open the portal? Those using the "optional" MM will have little to no experience and it takes at least 4 experienced players to open the portal in KF raid.

So could you please explain how the very first ones to play the KF Raid were able to open it if nobody had EVER played it before? Or those who opened the Vault of Glass first time? Experience is something you gain by try and error when your are doing something for the first time without any clues whatsoever about it. Anyone who use matchmaking can achieve the same as those who don't use it. Yes it can take more time and it can be time consuming but that's why it's asked to be OPTIONAL. Those who don't want to have that kind of experience... don't use it.

Yes you do need at least 4 players to open the portal in KF,and that's if there pretty damn good and know what to do.Maybe 3 if your a PvE "god" in Destiny. The mechanics of it are simple but getting dropped in with randoms that may or may not actually play or even communicate,let alone be properly leveled and geared,will make it almost impossible for 6 to do it.

tell me if I'm misunderstanding here, but you're telling me that risking AFKers in raids is worth it as long as some noob who probably doesn't have a mic gets to "experience," a raid?

The AFKers who sit still doing nothing for 3 minutes (maybe 2 minutes) at most should be automatically kicked back to the orbit, allowing other player(s) to join. Btw, I'm deaf, so I don't use mic and I still completed VoG/Crota Hard mode multiply times and has completed Skolas's Revenge and King's Fall Normal once. Still would like to complete the King's Fall Heroic mode as well as the Challenge modes, though. Still did fine in KF Heroic from beginning until Oryx that we can't beat it against him. :/
