I have. It did leave me with many questions, like who are the Ecumene (big E)? They are someone the Hive fought long ago, but The City card also refers to the City as ecumene (little e). Assuming we eventually get time travel abilities (like the Mysterious Exo), could we be going back in time and fighting the Hive as well (or going back in time to recolonize to avoid a future calamity, and accidentally re-encountering the Hive)?

  • http://www.destinypedia.com/Ecumene I was gonna write a long and detailed post describing the Ecumene, but I think Destinypedia's work suffices.

  • Also, is Oryx male or female when referenced in other cards? Specifically the Darkness 3 card, where Toland describes three countries described as ruled by Queens, and in a war of swords (sword logic?). And I find it interesting that the Worms turn the Hive on to Sword Logic as the power that shapes and refines the universe, and yet the Worms themselves do not practice Sword Logic (things can only be taken), as they barter for everything.

  • That's a very interesting point. It comes to show the hive aren't evil, just desperate.

  • Oryx is male, but was once a female "proto-Hive" by the name of Aurash

  • I think I'm mostly wondering if Toland's mentioning of "Queens" should be taken literally, and if so, does Toland refer to Oryx (or a previous stage of Oryx, like Aurash)? And if the "Queen" part should be taken literally, who are the other two Queens. Toland specifically did not go for a gender neutral "Rulers" or "Leaders". I figure he had some reason for that.

  • Oryx was originally a girl called aurash

  • I and then Aurx, if I rmemeber correct. Thant morphed in to "king form" and became Oryx. I was just wondering, as Toland talks about a war between three Queens, I didn't know if Toland was referring to Oryx as one of the "Queens".

  • They were originally sisters 1 became king, 1 became a knight, and 1 became mother/wizard. So maybe.

  • My friend also pointed out that the nature of the three Queens also seems to line up with the goals of the Factions in the City. One wants a just nation of law. (Queen 1 =? New Monarchy) One wants to build a tower to the stars. (Queen 2 =? Dead Orbit) And the last Queen wants to conquer every thing (Queen 3 =? Future War Cult) I do not ascribe to this, but it is interesting that they do line up nicely in this one case.

  • I'm on board with that theory. We are just zombies that kill at the Traveler's whim. I also think that when we go off map, it's our ghost that kills us to ensure we are doing what the Traveler desires of us.

  • Yeah but are the other enemies any better? The fallen have used human bones as food and cabal have carved out a huge space empire, and have probably murdered billions of sentient beings. The vex have likely killed many trillions of beings across multiple timelines. Finally, the hive become powerful by killing, which means that the most powerful hive have killed hundreds, if not thousands of different species. The books of sorrow even show Oryx committing mass genocide multiple times!

  • I don't think we are better or worse. We are just disposable tools at the beck and call of the Traveler/Speaker. We kill at their whim and never question why or if it is right or wrong.

Doesn't killing things that have killed Entire species make us good?

  • Are we killing them to save the rest of universe? Or to save our own ass? If it is the first one, yes we are good. If it is the second, self preservation.... If that makes you good, the Hive took on the worms to save themselves and wage war to feed the worms and save themselves. The Fallen are trying to get the Traveler back to save themselves. The Vex, who can travel in time saw such an existential threat in us and the Hive that they wage war with both of us because they could not figure out how to stop this chain of events before this point. Are they "good"?

  • I think our motives are mixed. Right now all we can do is attempt to save ourselves. But given time and I believe we'd save others.
