The Definitive Guide to Halo 3's Forge by superduper66

In this guide, you'll read and gain an understanding of what Forge is, how you use it in its basic form, and how to use many advanced techniques, including methods of Forging, and how to Forge maps using Foundry and Sandbox, as well as learning about spawns and how to make a good map. This guide has just about everything you need to know, but at the same time it is not perfect and can always be improved by information that is not included. This thread is merely based on my experience as a Forger and experience from other people from which I have gathered and compiled into one thread.
There is no one way to make a map as everyone has their own Forging style, but following the tips in this guide will greatly enhance your ability to Forge a map regardless of who you are. Forging is not for everyone, but anyone who does Forge must always realize this quote: "Patience is a virtue". Forging is very time consuming and can be very tedious, but with patience and practice, you'll Forging maps out your ass all day long. :-)

[Part One] The Basics

Hello fellow Bungie.net-ers! If you are here, you are interested in the "Forge" feature of the Xbox 360 game Halo 3.
About Forge
"Forge" is an in-game feature to the Xbox 360 game Halo 3. In "Forge" mode, players can select a multiplayer map from their map archive and tweak, create, or even destroy objects present on any multiplayer map.
Although you may move and fight freely as a player in "Forge", the real work is done in Edit Mode, or Monitor Mode. Pressing up on the D-Pad of your Xbox 360 controller enables Edit Mode. In this mode, you are free to manipulate virtually any map object, such as weapons, vehicles, map objectives, and more. Pressing up again on your D-Pad will return you to Player Mode. Turning into Player Mode is great if you want to test out your creation.
Forging in Halo 3 can support up to eight total players when signed into Xbox LIVE or System Link, and four total players on a local console. This allows for multiple players to Forge together or fly around in Edit Mode. This may help make work go faster, and they may even help come up with ideas you never even thought of.

Here are a few tips to get you started on your Forge journey:
-You are assigned a set budget for adding items to each map. If you run out of budget, you can delete objects for more "money". Each object is worth a certain amount of "money".
-Not all objects (such as vehicles and weapons) are available on every map.
-Press the blue "X" button on your Xbox 360 controller when you have an object highlighted to learn more about the object and its available properties.
-To save your map, simply press the Start Button and select "Save Map". If you would like to play your map, go to the "Custom Games" lobby and select your map from the map archive and start the game up.
-If you ever are unsure of what the controls for "Forge" are, pressing the Start button on your Xbox 360 controller will show you all the controls.

[Part Two] Foundry and Sandbox

Ok, so you know what Forging is all about. Great. But now it is time to put your knowledge to the test.
There are two maps that were created specifically for this feature: Foundry and Sandbox. Each map has its own distinct features, but the have one thing in common: Forge. Let's get into the major differences of these two maps.
Foundry
Foundry is a map located inside of a warehouse. Players can edit every single object in this voluminous industrial warehouse, placing stairways, walls, bridges, and tunnels to create an entirely new play space and build almost any kind of map imaginable.
Foundry was the very first map released as DLC (Downloadable Content) and also the first map released for the Halo series specifically for imaginative customization. It features urban style walls, windows, dumpsters, and industrial boxes to fit with the theme of the warehouse that is Foundry. The map, although completely customizable, has a very dull color tone to it, making it hard for maps to look different or nice. However, many of the objects in Foundry align neatly and look clean. Foundry also is not very large, only being able to support a Wraith as its largest vehicle, and no flying vehicles. However, the walls allow for much neater forging, and the lines on the ground allow for easy lining up of objects and neater maps overall.
Sandbox
Sandbox was the next Forging-specific map to be released as part of the Mythic Map Pack (Part One). Sandbox essentially is a Forger's dream. Along with Sandbox's overloaded amount of Forgeable objects, it also features three distinct layers of the map for near limitless Forging possibilities: The Sky Bubble, The Ground Level, and The Crypt. Each level, in Forge mode only, features a grid line for neat forging so you can easily line up objects without worrying if they are even.
Unlike Foundry and other maps, Sandbox constantly hits what is known as an Item Limit, as well as the usual Budget Limit. There are so many objects usable on Sandbox, that if too many are placed on the map, no more objects can be placed. Other maps can hit this limit, but Sandbox is often the main culprit for this issue.
Thankfully, to help prevent the limit from happening too soon, Bungie has warned users that if they want to make full use of Sandbox that they should adhere to the following:
"Instead of making a blank slate by deleting all the objects, simply move them to the side while you build and you'll be in control of the full 640 objects." A.k.a. 'Stacked" maps.
For your Forging convenience:

Crypt Stacked
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING DEFAULT AND STACKED SANDBOX MAPS:
Be very careful when setting default Sandbox items to "SPAWN AT START: NO". The objects are very glitchy and sometimes either remain put, disappear for the entire round, or move to another spot on the map. A good tip, if you are looking to interlock or geomerge them, is spawn and object, have that object not spawn at start, and then place down the Default Object where you want it. If your objects on Sandbox are acting glitchy and not allowing you to grab it, it may be because you set a default item to not spawn at start. If that is the case, just start a new round, wait next to that object, and wait for it to disappear-then-reappear. Then it'll be safe to change back to "SPAWN AT START: YES". Then start a new round and it'll be normal.

[Part Three] Bungie-made Maps

This is probably the most helpful tool you'll ever have with you. Looking at Bungie-made maps will answer almost any question you have, in terms of what weapons are appropriate, how long their spawn times should be, if vehicles work well, objectives, where weapons should be placed, where players should spawn, how many spawns, etc.
Look at maps that are similar to the one you want to make. If you are making a large scale map meant for more than twelve players, you would want to look at maps like Avalanche, Valhalla, Longshore, Standoff, Rat's Nest, etc. If you want a smaller team based map for around eight players, looking at maps like Guardian, Blackout, Citadel, Heretic, Construct, The Pit, Orbital, Assembly, Ghost Town, etc. You get the idea.
You may also get building ideas based off of core gameplay concepts that Bungie-made maps have, such as the vertical lifts of Construct, or the ability to fall to your death on Guardian, or the Symmetricallity of The Pit. Even from Halo 2 or Halo CE maps, such as Wizard, Headlong, Coagulation, Battle Creek, Chill Out, etc. Nearly all of your ideas, apart from your own imagination, will derive off of Bungie-made maps.

-
Well that is fine and dandy but when it comes to ghost morping I can never get it level with the map can you help me out

Wow. That was the most amazing tutorial I have ever seen on Forge. Every detail is explained. I wish you had released this a year or two ago when I started getting into it myself so I wouldn't have spent hours learning myself!!!! I give you a hundred thumbs up (ones other than mine from a few of the marines I have killed in my time in Halo 3). [Edited on 04.18.2010 6:27 PM PDT]
Posted by: Boost Deuce I notice quite a few people bumping this thread, saying generic stuff like "This is the best thread ever" and they are all have a group, Forever Forgers, in common. It should be locked for planned bumping.
I posted a link to this thread in Forever Forgers. This isn't a "planned bump" as you say. If people continuously do that, they need to be banned. I posted this in Forever Forgers:
Posted by: superduper66 Hopefully you all find it useful! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask, either in that thread or in this one. Whatever you do, though, don't bump the thread for the sake of bumping it. That is what got my earlier edition locked, unfortunately. But if you have any questions or it helped you a lot in some way, feel free to bump it for that purpose :-)
Basically, people, stay on topic for this thread, and don't bump it. If you have questions, ask. It's not against the rules to congratulate people, especially for guides like this, but posting things like "best thread evar" is considered spam, especially in large numbers. It's what got my previous guide locked, and also got that huge Secret of Sandtrap thread locked way back when. Although I thank you guys for taking the time to read the thread.
Posted by: JPeloquin218 Also, I have quick question. When ever I set spawns for slayer, they are always messed up. As far as I know, attackers are blue and defenders are red, but it is always the opposite.
Attackers are always blue and Defenders are always Red. It might change if you are playing Asymmetric games, but not Slayer. Are any of your spawn points (not to be confused with starting points) set to "Attacker" or "Defender"? Or, do you have a respawn zone set incorrectly?

Wow I bet that took you a LOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG time to write. This should be pinned. You Rock!

This is awesome! I wish I had used a stacked map now O_o Is there any way you no of to eliminate bumps in walls when they are used as floors? Boost: The reason that we're all from Forever Forgers is because he posted a thread for it there, if anything, your post is more useless than ours. Voicing our thanks and approval of this thread should not be considered a problem. [Edited on 04.18.2010 10:34 AM PDT]

This has to be the best forge guild out there.

I just bookmarked your thread! I loves it! I'm working on a big assault map right now, in sandbox, and you just helped with some things I've over looked, and explained it all better. Thanks!
Posted by: antidope671
Posted by: halomcee Why this isn't even a hot topic. It's the best thread ever.
because stacking boxes isnt the average players concern
Yea, most likely. Just depends one what you have fun with. I'm sure anyone who Forges and wants to know more, or has any questions about Forge can find this thread useful. If you want more people to see it, just ask questions and save the thread. That's about all the advice I can give you. If any of you are having spawn issues or want advice on weapon setup and such, this thread is perfect for you.
Posted by: superduper66 Which thread are you referring to?
Ooohh... this is about what you wrote, not me. I'ma not advertise and get either locked. But nice writeup, to be on topic. I can appreciate a long thread having written a few myself. :D
Posted by: Get On My Level Is this available in synopsis form?
Yep. It is split up into sections for easy reading.
Posted by: austiniskool ima bump ya cuz thats a lota work, but im not sure that anyone wants to read it all. might want to make a video
Please don't bump my thread for no reason. Thanks for the support, but I don't want this thread to be locked. If you don't want to read it all, find the section that best fits your need. If you are new to Forge and are interested, treat it as an instruction manual. If you already are good at Forge and just want a better understanding of something, go to the section you want to learn about, or ask your questions here.
Posted by: iRec7ifY reported for bumping
If you are referring to me, I was given permission by a moderator to post this guide, despite the amount of times I would need to double post to get all the info in.
Posted by: LastedPandora
In this guide, you'll read and gain an understanding of what Forge is,
I'm sorry but I stopped reading there. Since halo 3 has been out for 2 and a half years, I think people know enough about how to use forge. I am sorry you wasted your time writing a lengthy post about an outdated topic.
Then don't post if you don't care. The topic is useful to anyone who is new to Forge, wants to know something about a topic they don't know (such as the many questions about spawns people have). This guide is for people who really want to know how to make some good maps and answer any questions they may have in case portions of their map doesn't work.
Posted by: MrBojangles136 informative thread could have been more useful 2 years ago though. A little late to the party with this book
I agree, but it can't be helped unfortunately. You don't have to read the entire thing to learn something new about Forge you didn't know. I organized it into sections for easy reading.
Posted by: antidope671 in summation---- FORGE, where people throw boxes on old maps and think its good, on foundry and sandboxes, where bungie takes the worst creations and throws them into matchmaking. its a good thread, but seeing as how ive only made one map in forge and it was on sandbox and everyone who played it said it was bad, i lost interest in forging
This thread could be helpful to you, but only if you have the interest. Using some of the tips in this guide, your version of Forge ("FORGE, where people throw boxes on old maps and think its good, on foundry and sandboxes, where bungie takes the worst creations and throws them into matchmaking") and turn them into works of art. PS, the people who submit maps for matchmaking used every tip in this guide to their advantage. They already know everything in this guide.

Super, this is your best guild yet, make sure you post this in FF.
