Destiny is a fantastic game, first off. But the Patrol zone on Earth dubbed, "Cosmodrome", is not set in Russia as it depicts.
Throughout a handful of grimoire cards, of which some have talked about the collapse, tells of the time when the "Darkness" first invaded Earth.
Amongst the destruction that had left our planet towards utter devastation, the mass majority of Humanity rushed towards the Cosmodrome in an attempt to make for the launching ships. This lead to panic and anarchy. People were trampling over one another and caused mayhem on their way towards these shuttles, which further lead to..."incidents"...
If you travel into "The Blast" within the Cosmodrome, (from the Devil's Lair strike) you will see a large crater in front of a Devil Walker. This crater was caused by a massive fuel explosion and killed hundreds of people.
As the lore within the grimoire cards claims, the Cosmodrome was the best chance that Humanity had at survival, and was located in Kazakhstan due to the fact that, at that time, Kazakhstan was the primary example of a well developed research/transportation station based solely on space exploration and provided shuttles to Freehold and the Ishtar Collective.
Other than that, I do not know if Kazakhstan was part of the Russian Federation in Destiny's Universe.
Edit: So many typo's... Lol

1 ReplyYeah and Krime (not sure if correct english form) was part of Ukraine a while ago. Before events of Destiny, I would imagine that most of eastern Europe is Old Russia.

Isn't that what they said in the Ride Along?

Perhaps in Destiny's timeline, they decided to or were forced to merge with Russia?

4 RepliesTechnically Kazakhstan is part of "The Russ" (don't know if I spelled that right) proclaimed to be part of Russia by Ivan the Terrible in the 1500's. While today it's its own country, it's still Russia historically speaking.

3 RepliesThey should nerf tripmines more #nerftripmines

National borders change over time (numerous examples including Germany, the US, and China). Additionally, new countries rise where they didn't exist in previous years (Liberia, Israel), and some old countries collapse and are lost to history (Holy Roman Empire, Persia, Soviet Union). My point is that its not at all impossible that Russia could expand to annex/conquer surrounding areas, especially in a fictional, future, post-apocalyptic setting.

1 ReplyVery nice!!

1 ReplyAFAIK Russia is building a new Cosmodrome in Vostochny. Could be that but it's more likely Kazakhstan

3 RepliesEdited by eleven11911: 6/16/2016 6:07:41 PMYou're wrong, its actually located in Kansas U.S. Wichita... to be exact.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's why it's called old Russia cuz kazistan or whatever it's called used to be in Soviet Union
-
I believe it's loosely based on Baikonour Cosmodrome, which is in current-day Kazakhstan. The dried-up sea of the Forgotten Shores, with its landlocked shipwrecks, is probably inspired by the Aral Sea, which is about 120 miles to the west of Baikonur.
