Xbox is trying to do a console reset and push for the "next gen" to come in 4 year cycle rather than the 360s 8 year cycle but the original Xbox had a 4 year cycle though Microsoft claimed they had to release then because they though PS3 was going to release at the same time.
The point is to try to get ahead of Sony. Essentially Sony will have to slap a new console to release next year in order to prevent Xbox from getting a lead (with a new console reset.) It's likely that Sony can rebound and get something in the pipeline but doubtful it will be released the same time (within 90 days and more likely 180 days just like 360 vs PS3).
It seems MS has been planning for this for for some time while Sony was only trying to make a beefy VR console with 4K for the fall but Xbox didn't counter with an equal system, they instead has been working on a system way more powerful than ps4 neo. Sony could jump through hoops to meet a similar release but I doubt it will be in the same 90 day window.
MS knows xbox one will not be able to catch ps4 but Xbox Scorpio resets the console war prematurely at 4 years catching Sony with its proverbial pants down. Ps4 neo was just a "mild bump up" to do 4K and VR and Scorpio is a new console and way more powerful. The result Sony is going to have to scrap neo or release neo while also scrambling to make a "third" console. Pressure is on Sony.
Edit: I have both consoles and like the exclusive games of both systems this isn't a "hate this_______ and love this________" point. It's actually a concern post that MS is trying to reset the console cycle and we as gamers MAY get left behind unless we upgrade. I get the logic of MS wanting to do this but I am skeptical of their statements of not leaving XB1 behind.
Edit 2: PS4 Neo has to come this year to help with VR sales as the current PS4 "supposedly" has issues. So the Neo will be able to run VR in best graphic mode while ps4 will be "optimized" as best as it can.
Edit3: my guess: MS is not entering VR till next year and will use Scorpio because XB1 sorely lacks the power to make VR not chug. Scorpio will be the VR entry and likely 4K gaming. Of course that will be costly. I expect it to be $500-600 for that power as anything higher people will balk unless it's a VR package and the headset is included and its $800. Im still not sold on VR and think it will be like 3D.
Edit4: more info about the "synergy" between Xbox one and Scorpio. The current Xbox one can do 1.3 trillion calculations per second aka teraflops, ps4 can do 1.84 teraflops (this is why Sony has 1080 and is better graphics among other things) and the Xbox Scorpio is "supposed" to be able to hit 6 teraflops. The goal is to hit 4K gaming and VR gaming and then let developers "downscale" to Xbox one. Essentially what developers do for PC (best) then "downscale" or "optimize" to console. So Xbox one won't be "left behind" but it will obviously be underpowered and not as "pretty" to play or as stable.
To me it seems like they are trying to make a steam console.
Edit5: Seems some talking heads for MS keep saying 4K gaming but don't explain how. Seems BS hype unless this console FAR beyond $600 (using PS3 price point)or has "magic" software.

5 RepliesI'm taking Scorpio over Neo because I own PS4 and XB1, but I'm an Xbox person. Still undecided on VR. Definitely not paying MSRP for Xbox VR, PSVR, Vive, Oculus, or OSVR.
