Is it bad that I want Lord Saladin to die?

Rise of Iron, the destiny expansion dated to release September 20th, looks amazing. They're adding new locations, weapons, enemies, and based on the stream and the leaked information it looks like it'll definitely have enough content to warrant it's $30 price tag. Not only do they have all this content but it also promises an enriching story telling experience which is a great step up from vanilla Destiny (TTK had a good story though). However, and this is something I found lacking from vanilla and to an extent TTK, was the emotional depth of the story. Based on speculation and trailers it looked like Destiny originally had an amazing story, it had betrayal and no clear cut sides, sadly for the vanilla release they boiled it down to and "Us vs them" storyline. It was very flat and disappointing, you never grew attached to any characters and despite the grimoire they never explored the lore very deeply in game. I never felt compelled to do anything in the story. It was easy to put the game down if we ignored gameplay simply because the story wasn't there, if I put my controller aside and stopped I wasn't questioning what could end up happening. I never thought "Man, I wonder what's happening with Ikora Rey." or "What if it wasn't chained up?" xD, or "Is the mysterious stranger going to die if I don't defeat the darkness?", this kinda stuff never crossed my mind because I just didn't care. With the DLC and then the TTK expansion they actually introduced the need to come back story wise. "OMG they're all getting taken! The queen is dead? Eris is losing her mind?" It brought it back to something that was all about scaring someone into playing in a matter of speech. They were shocking you into thinking you had to save everyone right now. However once again, there was very little emotional depth. Sure, the queen "dies" but it isn't like she was a character we knew very well or felt super attached to. Eris returned from the pit. Cayde-6 who we actually grew to know and like just stayed up in the tower, the most dangerous thing he did was tell Eris to get her rock off of his map. I feel like the NPCs are all cardboard cutouts and are only at the tower when I am instead of being a living breathing world, that even though I may not be playing, it is still there. So for RoI, I want there to be emotional depth... real emotional depth. So I officially am pitching my idea that Lord Saladin should die. (Yes Ik this wouldn't make too much sense because they'd have to replace him for IB and probably on Felwinters peak but just hear me out.) Lord Saladin will probably one of the main quest givers or story leaders. Throughout the RoI we are tasked with finally locking away SIVA and becoming an Iron Lord. Here's the thing, the last time the plague had to be locked away the rest of the Iron Lords had to sacrifice themselves in order to save us. My idea is that throughout the story Lord Saladin and the iron lords are more than just a voice. Wouldn't it be cool to have the "ghosts" of the Iron Lords follow you around and guide you through your missions almost like the glowing white ball in the TTK. They would talk from beyond the grave and tell you what to do, but as you progress through the story you come across a cutscene where you over hear Lord Saladin talking to "no one" and he admits that it "Has to be done/there is no other way". This character that you have known to love is now considering stuff much darker. So you become great friends as you build yourself up into an Iron Lord. However the last story mission Lord Saladin must jump in and Sacrifice himself saying "I'm coming to you my Iron Lords" to lock away SIVA for good. This is how the quest for Gjallarhorn would start as you sadly create it out of his armor. This would create sacrifice and emotional depth and would be interesting but... there still has to be a raid right. So what can then transpire is he has only just bought you time, so you must form a team of six and truly destroy SIVA so Lord Saladin's sacrifice won't be in vain. This story addition would add depth, relate your forging of Gjallarhorn to the original forging, tie it in to the raid and expand on the lore as you are now the last Iron Lord and you must truly rebuild Felwinter's Peak. It would be super cool and it would be something I'd love to see! TL/DR: Kill Saladin for story and lore purposes

  • I think it would be more emotional if the Exo stranger teleported in front of us when we were about to take a fatal bullet or something. We have more of an emotional connection with the Exo stranger, so I would make more sense

  • I think u r right he should sacrifice himself for leaving the iron lords but what if the iron lords told h to run and teach us to become iron lords maybe they foresaw the guardians and wanted lord salidbar to train us and to make us iron lords

Death doesn't have to make someone feel for a good story, I'd say from the position Lord Saladin is in he's got it rough as it is. Ask yourself this: - Is the reason he's alive because he cowered while his comrades sealed SIVA away? - Does he live with the guilt of being the last surviving member of the Iron Lords? - Does he ask himself "What could I have done to help them? Should I be dead with them"? - Was him coming to the tower to enact Iron Banner matches to train us for when SIVA rose again? - Lord Shaxx was an apprentice to Lord Saladin, will he perhaps play a role in the assault of SIVA? - Did Lord Saladin tell Shaxx about SIVA and told him to keep it secret from us? - If Lord Saladin is deemed to die, will Shaxx take his place as one of the last Iron Lords?

The Iron Lords existed before the 1st guardians appeared so I'm pretty sure that they would haven't a ghost including Saladin Edit: didn't know you meant 'actual' ghost :p

                    • He most probably will . I've said this already . We get to become iron Lords like saladin is he is( the last one) but it was said in the reveal we get to become iron Lords ourselfs and in the new story missions I'm guessing he will die and we won't see him when iron banner returns after the dlc. We will go to that new room where the iron Lords are buried and rewards will pop out a chest instead .

                    • Now see, if he does die, or if he is dying on the battle ground, then I believe he would say "guardian, make the light ... Stronger, take the axe of iron, wield it, and then... Rise with them." It may be a dramatic/sad cutscene, but I u get to wield his axe and take his place.
