We're we once fighting with the iron lords against this "new" infection? Is that why we were found in Russia?

When or why our guardian died originally is completely unknown. I've always thought personally that we just died during the Collapse trying to get onto one of the colony ships fleeing the system, but there's nothing terribly concrete to support or refute that idea.
