Strength of the Pack Ch. 24: The Tough Decision

Last night was rough. I say last night, I think I slept through all of yesterday as well. I crawled out of bed and took a shower. Doctor Lorinski had to make my arms waterproof for this exact reason. The lukewarm water felt great. I got dressed and collected my belongings and stuffed them in my pockets. "Um, what's his name? Banshee wants to see you. Got something for you." "Did he say what it is?" I asked. "Nah." Colt joined me as I walked out of the door. The Tower was more active than usual. Guardians were running to and fro collecting gear and weapons. I weaved through the crowds to Banshee's counter. "Howdy, Guardian?" "Mornin'. What do you got for me?" I asked as I inspected the variety of weapons. "What do you need?" He asked. "Um, didn't you say you had something for me?" I asked, just as confused as he was. "Oh, right. Right. Here, I got this custom piece for ya." Banshee reached behind his desk, and handed me a package. "Thanks." I opened it, revealing a white and black hand cannon. A large emblem was painted on the grip. An ace of spades. "Keep it oiled." Said Banshee before going back to work. I placed the new hand cannon in my holster and headed to the Wolf Pack balcony near Master Rahool. No one else was here, just me. Me, Colt, and the Traveler. I sat on the rails and let the morning air cool me. It was a great time for thinking. "I could've done better!" I said louder than I thought. "What was that?" Asked Blake. I turned quickly, he startled me. "Uh... on the Dreadnought. I was too reckless. I could've done better." I looked out over the City. "I should've." "We were all out of our league with Oryx. But hey, we killed him." Blake propped himself up against the rails. "Didn't you say that you never finished training? Never went to an academy?" "Yeah. Theta-14 wanted to train me on his own... Look where that got us." I said somberly. James walked up to us. He was stumbling slightly, and he was holding his head. "How do you feel?" Asked Blake. "Bad hangover." He answered. "Good." Blake looked at the Traveler. Blake patted my right shoulder. "You should really look into that, though." "I should." I said. "Look into what?" Asked James. "Nothin'." Dakota had come up from the Hall of Guardians, most likely talking with Ikora. James started to approach him. "Captain, can I get-" "Hold on." Dakota looked to all of us. "Ikora told me that a signal was detected in the Vault of Glass... Says it's a 'Praedith'. If some other guardian is able to reach out from the Vault, I hope that..." Dakota paused. "Anyways, until further notice, you all are on a leave of absence. I'll be taking this mission alone." He looked to James. "Now, what were you wanting?" "I was going to ask if I could get some vacation time, but this is a close second." James started to walked away. "See you all later!" Blake turned his back to the rails. "So, you're going back to the Vault? Never thought I'd see the day." "Why's that?" I asked looking up to him. Blake just waved it off. Dakota looked to the ground. He nodded as he swallowed. "There's that chance that... If this 'Praedith' lived... so could anyone else." Blake crossed his arms. "I know, I know... I'd do the same." Dakota toughened up and saluted to us. I saluted back after I saw Blake do the same. Dakota headed off for the hanger without another word. I saw Morin also walking towards the hanger. "Hey, Morin. Sleep well?" I asked. He didn't answer my question, but he did acknowledge that I spoke. "If Dakota asks where I went, just tell him I'm on private business." Morin ran down the hall. "Okay." Said Blake as he stretched out his arms. I tried to stop Morin, but he wouldn't listen. "Um, Dakota said we are on-" "Just let him go..." Blake whispered to me. "Ok. So, everyone is leaving. Doing their own thing. Is that it? Just like that, and everyone walks away? How do you walk away from what we just went through?" I ranted. "Stress, because of what we went through. We've seen our nightmares before, but that was... Well, I can't exactly say, 'H*** on Earth'. H*** on Saturn?... I don't know." Blake slowly walked away. "We're all taking a break, Alan. I suggest you do the same. Think about what we were talking about..." And like that, I was alone. Well, except for Colt. It wasn't even nine O' clock... Close, but not exactly. This was my paranoia kicking in: No one said what they had planned, neither did I. No one said they were returning... neither did I. I'm not sure if everyone else had been thinking about leaving for the past few days or not, but I was still thinking if I should or not. I could. I should. I walked back to my apartment and gathered some clothing, and my turnout gear. "So, what do you got planned?" Asked Colt. "I'm going back for training. Something I desperately need before I pull anything like last week again." I said as I locked the door behind me. "You seem like you're moving..." I stopped, looked at him, then continued to walk without uttering a word. "Howdy, kid. Where you off to?" Asked Amanda as she brought my ship up. "Just visiting some old friends." I said. I climbed in the ship, warmed up the thrusters and began the countdown for takeoff.
